【答案】The other day our class had a heated discussion about whether it is necessary for parents to accompany students studying at school. As for the question, there are two different opinions.

38% of the students are for the idea that parents should accompany students studying. That is because parents can do such housework as making delicious dinner and washing clothes for students, which in turn allow students to have more time to study and have a good rest.

On the contrary, 62% of the students go against the former viewpoint. In their opinion, parents quitting the job to accompany students will add economic pressure to family. Besides, students will be under mental stress. In addition, there is no chance to develop their independence.

As far as I am concerned, I am for the latter viewpoint. In the long run, not only should students study well but also learn the ability to live independently. Only by living alone can students have the chance to grow up.

【题目】Many young people these days adore the advertised magazine body and become too focused on attaining this image instead of worrying more about what lasts and even grows over time. But could you imagine being considered beautiful for years, and suddenly being ugly after moving to another continent? It is a sad reality that people don’t realize how vacillating the idea of beauty can be from one country to another.

Think of the most typical American girl you know. Is she blonde haired with white skin and light eyes, and does she love shopping or sports? Now place this girl in the heart of Africa, a place where beauty is placed on what you can control. The Maasai tribe in Kenya focuses on how clean people are, and how stylish their piercings (穿孔) are. This tribe’s culture is to be a brave fighter, so they will cut their skin with patterns in it to show that they are strong. If you don’t look fierce, you are not beautiful.

Other countries like North Korea and South Korea have their own unique views on beauty. In an interview, a woman who has lived in both North and South Korea claims that beauty in North Korea is based more on your ability to be a good woman and wife. She says that women in North Korea are less concerned about fashion and beauty in the physical sense. She says they did have a time when big eyes were a big deal and everyone wanted to get double eyelid surgery. This is something extreme and could perhaps be influenced by Western culture. And the idea of getting surgery done to look more attractive is crazy.

【题目】“Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any more.” Alice’s mum said.

She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, for what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn between my responsibility to help Alice, and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m not sure this mother is ready to hear.

The truth—for this parent and so many others—is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力) ,and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grades As, championship prizes, and college acceptances, and not on purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.

1Both the mother and the teacher have noticed that ________.

A. Alice hates to tell them truth

B. Alice’s test scores are not so good

C. Alice chooses several subjects to learn

D. Alice doesn’t enjoy studying any more

2What does the underlined word “torn” mean in the passage?

A. pained to choose B. guilty to quit C. tired to manage D. certain to decide

3What does the teacher think of the girl?

A. Her academic perfection resulted from her character.

B. She is a gifted girl with spirits of challenging.

C. She is perfect in her character development.

D. Her academic performance is great.

4What leads to the girl’s change?

A. A few failure experiences. B. Fear of failing getting good grades.

C. Her mother’s over-protection. D. Her not being accepted by colleges.
