We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people.Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy(嫉妒)my luck?”“And Paul-why didn’t he pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?”When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.”that’s being friendly. But“lucky dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.

Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for is another noise that says one thing and means another . It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up(包藏) in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someones got a date for Saturday night? Good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture(姿态)?The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.

1.This passage is mainly about_____.

A. how to interpret(understand) what people say

B. what to do when you listen to others talking

C. how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

D. why we go wrong with people sometimes

2.According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that_______.

A. we fail to listen carefully when they talk

B. we tend to(倾向)doubt what our friends say

C. people usually state one thing but means another

D. people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say

3.In the sentence “Maybe he doesn’t see it himself.”In the second paragraph, the pronoun “it”refers to____.

A. being friendly B. a bit of envy C. lucky dog D. your luck

4.When we listen to a person talking , the most important thing for us to do is _______.

A. notice the way the person is talking

B. take a good look at the person talking

C. mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes

D. examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture

Chinese parents are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize, though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence.

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, tying to fix them ,your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

A. the parents’ ideas of educating their children

3.Doing some cooking at home helps children .

A. learn how to serve their parents

B. learn how to become strong and fat

C. get a lot from it and prepare themselves for the future

D. make their parents believe that they are clever

4.According to the last paragraph we can conclude that .

A. broken radios and television sets are useful

B. one’s interest and curiosity may be useful for his later life

C. an engineer must fix many broken radios

D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios

Facebook is now used by 30 million people in the UK, around half the population. Joanna Shields, vice president of Facebook Europe, made the announcement this morning at a media conference in London.

Globally, Facebook has more than 500 million registered (注册的) users, a milestone it hit last summer. Last July it had 26 million registered UK users. In the last eight months, it has attracted four million extra UK users, bringing the UK total to 30 million.

Facebook, the brainchild of Mark Zuckerberg while he was still studying at Harvard University, was launched in February 2004. The pace of its global growth has sped rapidly - Facebook had only 150 million registered users in January 2009.

One third of women aged between 18 to 34 check Facebook when they first wake up, before even going to the toilet, according to the research. 21% check Facebook in the middle of the night, while 42% of the same group think it is fine to post drunken photos of themselves onto the social network, a study by Oxygen Media and Lightspeed Research found.

Shields was speaking this morning at the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference about the power Facebook’s referrals (好友推荐)can bring to media sites, such as newspapers and TV services. She explained that the average Facebook user has 130 friends who they share links to media sites with regularly. “Media companies which take advantage of that are really seeing the benefits,” Shields said. Shields refused to be drawn on whether Facebook would develop its own mobile phone operating system and also said it was “silly” that Google had recently disabled the feature which allowed Google users to refresh their contacts with Facebook friends.

1.Eight months ago the number of registered users of Facebook in UK was about ____.

A. less than half of its populationB. 30 million

C. 4 millionD. 500 million

2.Shields talked at the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conferences about the following EXCEPT ____.

A. Facebook’s referrals

B. its plan on developing its own mobile phone operating system

C. its dissatisfaction with Google

D. its call for more media sites to take advantage of Facebook

3.What does the underlined word “disabled” mean in the last paragraph?

A. InventedB. Strengthened

C. AddedD. Stopped

4.What is the best title of the text?
