The art of giving gifts is to give something that others cannot buy for themselves.
                                         ------A.A. Milne
I have spent most of my career as a traveling salesman. There’s 36   lonelier than having meals myself in a coffee shop. One year, my five-year-old daughter Jeanine gave me a  37 . It was a soft toy penguin with a hand –painted  38 saying “I love My Dad!”  Tears came into my eyes and immediately, I gave it a  39 place on my desk.
Soon I had to leave on another business  40 . This time when I was  41 , I put the penguin in my suitcase. After that day, Jeanine always helped me pack with the penguin. Many years 42 by and that little penguin has traveled with me hundreds of thousands of miles all across America and over to Europe. We have also made many friends  43  the way.
44 one afternoon after leaving my hotel, I discovered that the penguin was  45 . Frantically, I phoned the hotel. The clerk  46  , saying it hadn’t been reported. But half an hour later, he called back to say that my penguin had been found. It was late,  47  I drove several hours to get my little  48 , arriving near midnight.
When I rushed to the hotel, I found that it was waiting at the front desk. In the lobby(大厅), some   49 business travelers looked at us, I think, with some  50 and envy(羡慕). Someone came out to shake my hand. One man told me that he had even volunteered to  51 it to me the very next day.
Jeannie is in college now and I don’t travel  52 much anymore. The penguin spends most of its time  53  on my dresser--- a reminder that  54  is the best traveling companion. All those years on the road, it was the one thing I never left home  55 .

One woman in nine will develop breast cancer (乳腺癌) over her lifetime. However, a healthy diet can reduce your risk of developing the disease by 40 to 60 percent.
Generally speaking, eating more vegetables can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer by 60 percent. Vegetables like cabbage are rich in fiber (纤维), can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. To get the most from their goodness, it’s recommended that you eat at least three to four cups of these vegetables per week.
It’s the oleic acid (油酸) contained in olive oil. American scientists conducting laboratory research have observed that oleic acid has a beneficial effect on breast cancer cells. Olive oil is the richest source of this acid, so whenever possible, use it in place of butter.
Eating fruit is another excellent way to help prevent the development of breast cancer. In fact, women who do eat fruit are six percent less likely to develop the disease. The American Institute for Cancer Research considers berries (浆果类) (blueberries, strawberries, etc.) to be powerful for breast cancer fighters.
It’s the lycopene (番茄红素), found in great quantities in tomatoes, that can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. The lycopene found in canned tomatoes is more readily absorbed by the body than that contained in fresh ones, so add tomato juice, paste, and sauce to your diet.
As a result of various studies, the American Institute for Cancer Research has concluded that components (成分) found in green tea can help halt the development of cancerous tumours (瘤) and even prevent them from appearing in the first place. Three cups a day will help you get the benefits of green tea.

Jesse was a great teacher, tutor, mentor, and family member. He was a dedicated (忠诚的)volunteer in the Peace Corps in Guinea, West Africa. He went to a place where he knew he could make a difference and wanted to help teach children who otherwise would not have a teacher. He made friends wherever he went and touched the hearts of many.

Many American schools have a student exchange program with foreign countries. Along with this program, there is usually another one called the“American Host Family”program. As its name suggests, the program gets American families involved in foreign students’ lives in America and offers homes for them.
Foreign students generally welcome such an opportunity to have a“family”here, but there are also those who prefer to stay“homeless”.
Many American families volunteer to host foreign students. However,if there is a shortage of host families, schools also get in touch with local people and introduced foreign students to them.
The“American Host Family”program changes in lengths of time.It can go from a few days to a few years, depending on each individual school. After the first year is over,it is up to foreign students and their“families”to decide if they want to stay together as a“family”.American families can host as many foreign students as they like. They can either have several students or just one at a time. Many families start with new students each year while still keeping in touch with the old ones.Schools usually leave it to foreign students and their host families to decide their activities after both sides meet.
My school, however, holds activities every year. On major holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, foreign students are usually invited to their thomes for dinner.Even schools that do not have host family programs often arrange students to get together with American families on these special holiday occasions.
It is typical that a host family invites its foreign daughter or son over, and they cook the student’s home food together,Undoubtedly,Chinese students are usually considered good cooks, whether or not they are really qualified for such praise at home.Although many Chinese students rarely cooked at home, they often have a hard time making their American friends believe that they cannot cook.It often happens when a Chinese student promises to cook a Chinese meal for his host family,he usually sees a little crowd expecting him:friends or relatives are also invited over for the“special”Chinese food!

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon left their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim(模糊的) memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations(调查研究). I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious(清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, keen(敏锐的) eyes, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the excellent and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
小题1:The first paragraph tells us the author ______.
A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B.lost his hearing when he was a child
C.didn’t like his brothers and sisters
D.was born into a naturalist’s family
小题2:The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because _______.
A.he didn’t live very long with them
B.the family was extremely large
C.he was too young when he lived with them
D.he was fully occupied with observing nature
小题3:It can be inferred from the passage that the author was _______.
A.a scientist as well as a naturalistB.a naturalist but not a scientist
C.no more than a born naturalistD.first of all a scientist
小题4: The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he _______.
A.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B.lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C.just reads about other people’s observations and discoveries
D.comes up with solutions in a most natural way
