My son Karl talked little after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But
the more I tried, the more withdrawn he became. His report card arrived, saying that he had been absent 95
times from classes and failed in the exams. I sent him to the school advisor, and I even begged him. Nothing
worked.
One day, I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. "I want to
talk to you about Karl's absences." Before he could say another word, all my disappointment and sadness over
Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. "I love my son but I just don't know what to do. I've tried
everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It's out of my hands." For a moment there
was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, "Thank you for your time", and hung
up.
Karl's next report card showed marked (显著的) improvement in his grades. Last week I attended a parent-
teacher meeting with Karl. His teachers praised him a lot and were amazed at the way he had turned himself
around. On our way home, he said, "Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?" I nodded. "That
was me. I thought I'd play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you.

                                My First Long Run
Two weeks ago,I had a quarrel with my husband. After he had driven off in anger,I realized that I
wasn't going to feel any better just sitting there.Feeling abandoned andguilty,I put on my gym shoes
to get some fresh air.
Our driveway has a slope (斜坡)that is easier just to jog downif you are lazy, takipg advantage of
gravity.Instead of stopping at theend of the slope,I decided to see if I could just jog to the end of
thestreet.1 had tried a few months ago and failed miserably,Since thatfirst attempt I had been jogging
regularly and was significantly fitter, but still very lazy. However this time around I managed to reach
thestop sign with ease and I figiired I would go a little further.
After about one kilometer, however, I noticed that my upperbody was tense. To make the moveinent
easier I had to relax my body, and tried to take deep breaths of fresh air.
I kept  giving myself the excuse  to  stop. No  one  would  bedisappointed. No one would even know. But I didn't stop.I wanted tokeep going harder , better , faster , stronger. To my great surprise , I ran4. 9
km in 31 minutes. When I got back,I had tears in my eyes. I didsomething I thought I could never do.
It was the first run of my life. Since then,I have improved mystride ( 步幅 ) and time. After every run I
feel fitter, happier andmotivated to keep progressing.I love the runner's high. I normally jogbecause I
want to look good. I want to run because it makes me feelgood.

My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live. Two dog walkers
passed by and we heard one of them say, "Never seen that dog around here before."
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling(蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We
bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a
phone number on the collar, but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin. It didn't have many teeth left and, well, it just seemed done.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog's food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with
me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk
while our new friend made short work of the food.
Eventually we got her home. We gave her a blanket, more food, kept her warm and wondered
what to do next.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch
of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father's dog. She was very old and should
probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn't bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned
home.
Here is the truth of the story:
Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me
to come back, but I wasn't hearing anything that made that sound likely.
I was about to turn and go when an old, worn out dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly
we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need
right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home, in my own family.
In the song "Love Is Not a Fight" Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, "And
if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door."
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.
1. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The two dog walkers didn't like the dog.
B. The old black dog was sick and weak and couldn't walk.
C. After finding the dog, the writer phoned its owners.
D. Most of the dog's teeth had been pulled out by someone.
2. We can infer from Paragraph 4 that ________.
A. Julie bought some food for the dog
B. the writer had his own pet dog
C. the dog didn't go with the writer
D. the dog didn't eat any of the food
3. After they got the dog home, the couple ________.
A. decided to raise the dog
B. took good care of the dog
C. found out that its owner was a lady
D. found it hard to get to sleep
4. The underlined part "our problem" in the passage refers to the fact that ________.
A. the writer didn't want to take Julie's advice
B. Julie disagreed with the writer's travel on business
C. an old and worn out dog appeared in front of them
D. the couple had some trouble with their marriage
5. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Helpful Couple.

My bookshelves are full of dust-and with good reason. When it comes to cleaning that part of my home,
I suffer from the most serious case of avoidance (回避反应症).
The thing is this: when I do set out to clean and re-organize my books, which seldom happens, I place
myself into a really bad situation. No sooner do I take a title from the shelf, blow off the dust, and wipe down
the cover than I find myself sitting on the floor with legs crossed and my back against the wall. Pretty soon
books get piled up on my legs as I am reunited with old friends.
It is as if these books have voices, and each wants to say its piece. "Remember me? I was given to you
when you went into the Navy, so that you would never lack for companionship," one whispers. Another says,
"I was your first book of poems, given to you before you learned to love poetry." And a third, "I was the book
that made history so attractive to you."
Perhaps the greatest pleasure of re-organizing my books are the surprises-or better said, reunions-that
occur. During my latest book-cleaning adventure, I found one that had fallen behind the shelf:"Tales of Edgar
Allan Poe." Not an unusual title, but the words written on the first page made it very special:"With Love from
Mom and Dad, Christmas 1965." What's this? A book on the physics of lasers (激光). It is filled with
mathematical statements, and I had bought it at a library sale when I was 12, not long after the laser had been
invented. I couldn't understand a bit of it, but I did learn what "laser" meant.
What I end up with when I empty my bookshelves is a cross-section (横剖面) of my personal history. It's
like a road cut where one sees all the layers of rock going back through time to the beginning of the simplest
life forms. The books I've read-and kept-are not just old friends. They are my résumé.
1. What could be said about the author?
A. He is too busy to tidy up his bookshelves.
B. He considers his books treasured possessions.
C. He has made a lot of notes in his books.
D. He is a lover of science books.
2. By saying that his books have voices, the author means _____.
A. they bring back happy memories
B. they are recorded in human voice
C. they say a lot about human history
D. they offer good topics for discussion
3. What does the author enjoy most from re-organizing his books?
A. Finding some missing books.
B. Putting books in good order.
C. Learning something new from the books.
D. Rediscovering interesting stories behind some books.
4. The underlined word "résumé" in the last paragraph probably means _____.
A. personal history
B. precious notes
C. good companion
D. simple life forms
