    Gao Yuanyuan, a Beijing girl, is lucky. She seems to have everything that most girls can only dream of. Her pretty face and slim figure were spotted by a talent scout (星探) when she was only 16. Now her latest work, “Shanghai Dreams” won the Jury
    Prize (评委会奖) at the 58th Cannes Film Festival, in France, on May 21. That success put Gao in the spotlight everywhere.
    But Gao, 25, said that she didn’t think there was much to get excited about. “I am an actress. That’s my job,” she said. Nowadays people pay more attention to fame and money in the entertainment world, but ignore the effort(努力，汗水) made by an actor.” “Acting in front of the camera is just a vocation（职业）. Like any other job, you need to show that you are capable,” Gao explained. With more young people seeing acting as an ideal job, Gao advises that they first ask themselves seriously, “Do I love performing, or do I want to be a star?” For Gao, being a good actress is the most important thing.
    Gao admitted that she didn’t like acting before. Her dream was to be an office worker. Her major at college was secretarial studies. “I did shoot ads and films when I was in college, but I thought of it as just a part-time job,” she added. “It was nothing special, in the same way my classmates were tutors and salesmen in their spare time.”
    It was not until the TV series “Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber” was shot that Gao began to love acting. At first, she said, the Hong Kong director didn’t think she was suitable for the role. “I performed in a fit of pique (赌气) and I’d never been so serious before,” she said.     A young man named Charles Lyell had different ideas. He wrote a book about them called Principles of Geology. The earth，according to Lyell，was not only thousands of years old，it was millions of years old. As to the common belief that changes in the earth’s surface happen suddenly because of a single earthquake or flood，he said that this might happen once in a while，but usually these changes took place very slowly. He believed that the surface of the earth had been changing from the beginning of time.     My life as a ‘runner’ began by running in a playground near my home in order to lose weight about 2 years ago. As time went by, I found myself so good at running that sometimes, I even forgot how many rounds I ran around the playground.
    Thanks to all this practice, I was able to win the 5th place in short course marathon game at ‘BASF Yeosu Site Athletic Competition’ held in October 2002. This event inspired（鼓舞）me to take part in public short-course marathon games such as 10km, 20km and half-course competitions. My next challenge was the Boston Marathon race, which is the world's oldest and most famous marathon races.     In April 2004, I was finally able to go to Boston. I was very pleased and proud because I could play a role to promote BASF all across the world through this sport. And it really happened! When I ran in the Boston Marathon wearing BASF logo（标记）, people along the streets rooted for me shouting ‘BASF! BASF!’. I was very touched and so proud of my company. Of course I completed the full course successfully.     At 50 I was the first woman to travel alone to the North Pole. But what should I do to celebrate my 60th birthday? What else, but a journey at the opposite end of the world, Antarctica.     Wu You, a 14–year–old Chinese Australian, used her diary to record what she had experienced in Guangzhou during this year’s Spring Festival travel period.
    She, like tens of thousands of passengers stranded (滞留) at the Guangzhou Railway Station, had a Spring Festival she could never forget. But different from most people, she put down what she saw and heard in her diary, which was published in Australia.
