There was a story many years ago of a school teacher―Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.

Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume (香水).

Teddy said, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.” After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, M. D.

The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

42. What did Mrs. Thompson find out about Teddy?

A. He often told lies.             B. He was good at math.

C. He needed motherly care.       D. He enjoyed playing with others.

44. Why did Teddy thank Mrs. Thompson at his wedding?

A. She had kept in touch with him.

B. She had given him encouragement.

C. She had sent him Christmas presents.

D. She had taught him how to judge people.

根据文章倒数第二段Teddy的话和第四段第三句“The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved.”

1. 阅读时要善于挖掘、领会文章的深层含义;

2. 学会通篇理解,而不要孤立地理解某词、某句或某段的含义;

We have designed all our bank cards to make your life easier.

How to use your NatWest Servicecard

As a Switch card, it lets you pay for all sorts of goods and services, whenever you see the Switch logo. The money comes straight out of your account, so you can spend as much as you like as long as you have enough money (or an agreed overdraft (透支)) to cover it. It is also a cheque guarantee (担保) card for up to the amount shown on the card. And it gives you free access to your money from over 31,000 cash machines across the UK.

How to use your NatWest Cashcard

You can use your Cashcard as a Solo card to pay for goods and services wherever you see the Solo logo. It can also give you access to your account and your cash from over 31,000 cash machines nationwide. You can spend or withdraw (提取) what you have in your account, or as much as your agreed overdraft limit.

Using your card abroad

You can also use your Servicecard and Cashcard when you’re abroad. You can withdraw cash at cash machines and pay for goods and services wherever you see the Cirrus or Maestro logo displayed. We take a commission charge (手续费) of 2.25% of each cash withdrawal you make (up to £4) and a commission charge of 75 pence every time you use Maestro to pay for goods or services. We also apply a foreign-exchange transaction fee of 2.65%.

How to use your NatWest Credit Card

*Pay in over 24 million shops worldwide that display the Maestrocard or Visa logo.

* Collect one AIR MILE for every £20 of spending that appears on your statement (结算单). (This does not include foreign currency or traveler’s cheques bought, interest and other charges.)

65. If you withdraw £200 from a cash machine abroad, you will be charged _____.

A. £4      B. £4.5     C. £5.25      D. £5.3

【解析】A。

1. 善于分辨有用信息和干扰(无用)信息,从众多的信息中找到所需信息;

2. 不要孤立地看待数字信息,而要理顺其与其它信息之间的关系;
