  CCTV NEWS,10-12-2006 08∶40 The 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China(CPC)has concluded its 6th plenary(全体的)session.It published a communiqué(公报)calling for social harmony.During the 4-day meeting(from 8-11), General Secretary Hu Jintao gave a keynote speech.

  Those at the meeting strongly suggested the construction of a social harmonious society, while the Party kept economic development as its central task, according to the communiqué.

  It also set the date and place for the Party’s 17th national congress in the second half of the 2007 in Beijing.

  The plenary meeting, attended by 195 CPC Central committee members and 152 alternate members, is the first of its kind, where the Party has focused on social development matters, rather than political and economic affairs.

  The communiqué admitted that While China is a harmonious society indeed in general, there are some problems that harmed its social harmony.

  Also according to the communiqué, the party will try its best to improve its legal system and human rights protection.Economically, it will make its efforts to narrow the income gap and increase employment.Improving government service, promoting people’s moral standards and securing public order are also high on the list.Protecting the environment is also a goal, to be achieved along with the others, over the next 15 years.

  To achieve these aims, the meeting stressed that more efforts should be made to balance economic and social development, promote social equity and justice, form a set of common aspirations, ideal and moral codes for the whole society, strength social affairs management and services, and create harmonious social relations for the unity of all Chinese people.

  While calling for efforts to promote economic growth, the Party also stressed the importance of making a new set of values for the market-based society in the making.
