Today is National Bike-to-Work Day. And on New York City’s jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York’s widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars.
When the weather is good, Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal(用踏板踩)his two young kids to school on a special Dutch-made bicycle. Naparstek supports the new lane.
Aaron: The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it’s possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what 21st century New York City looks like.
Prospect Park West is still a one-way road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane. Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to one-way traffic.
Lois: We wanted a lane — the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way. And it has not been done the right way.
Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan. I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.
Craig: I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in. You took what used to be a full street and you’re shrinking it.
Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%. Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a mandate.
Caroline: If this was an election, we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.

The Segway Human Transporter was invented by Dean Kamen. It is a two-wheeled vehicle designed for a single rider standing upright over its single axle(轴) and navigate using a set of handlebars resembling those on a bicycle.Electrically powered, it could travel over 15 miles on a single charge and reach speeds up to twelve miles per hour. Its speed and direction can be controlled by riders' changing their weights.
A college dropout and self-taught engineer, Kamen already held over 100 patents for his inventions when he developed the one he hoped would revolutionize short-distance travel. While still in college, Kamen started developing the medical devices (设备) that made his name.Later, he changed focus to the challenges faced by wheelchair users. His robotic wheelchair known as IBOT could climb stairs. This robot ended up paving the way for the Segway.
Before showing his most recent invention, Kamen had kept it a top secret for months. When it turned out to be little more than a motor scooter, many publicly expressed their disappointment. On closer examination, however, even his critics(批评家) had to admit that the vehicle was an engineering achievement. It answered the prayers of anyone who is worn out when walking downtown. Not everyone welcomed the Segway's arrival, though. Some complained it was too expensive, while others said it would further weaken the average American ' s fitness.A Japanese inventor even accused Kamen of stealing the idea for the Segway from him.
Despite the controversy, the U.S.postal service began using Kamen's invention a month after its appearance, and a factory was built with plans to produce about 40,000 Segways every month. The argument is still on whether the Segway will be remembered as the greatest invention since the light bulb, or just another forgettable electronic device.Anyway, trips to the local supermarket will never be the same again.
1.Which statement best describes the critics' reaction to the Segway?
A.Nothing but an electrical device.
B.A disappointing engineering mistake.
C.An expensive and disappointing invention.
D.Disappointing, but still a successful device.
2.Which is not a feature of the Segway?
A.One person at a time can ride on it.
B.It has two wheels with a single axle.
C.It is powered by electricity and can go up to 12mph.
D.Riders increase the speed by moving the handlebars
3.Some people expressed dissatisfaction with the Segway because of its______.
A.high cost B.danger to traffic
C.being difficult to use D.contribution to laziness
4.Shortly after the Segway appeared, there were _________.

Looking ahead to 2010, it appears financially(资金上)impossible to accommodate 85,000 new students in classrooms at public four-year universities. Fortunately, such an approach(方法)is not necessary. Indeed, it's not even appropriate(合适的).
Several forces are riding to the rescue. The two most important are distance learning and community and technical colleges. These will not eliminate the traditional setting where bachelor'(学士)and graduate degrees are earned. But they will be able to handle much of the growth in enrollments and the demand for higher education.
“When faced with a problem created by technology, apply more technology,” a late journalist once asserted. Higher education seems to be an example. New learning technology is a crucial tool in teaching new technical skills.
William Richardson, president of Johns Hopkins University, praised “Western Governors' University”--a virtual institution(虚拟大学)that uses the Internet and other information technology to overcome the vast distances of the West and reach people with education. “Just as the extremely controlled high school of old was perfect training for an assembly-line work force, so today's college is equally appropriate as a setting for a society whose members must acquire and manage knowledge from a wide variety of sources,” he notes.
Eastern Washington has long been a leader in this movement. For the past decade, Spokane's Education Service District 101 has brought the best teachers in the region to rural classrooms via satellite uplink. Washington State University(WSU) president Sam Smith reports that, during the same period, WSU managed a one-third increase in students with only 2 percent more faculty.
It's been done by holding growth at the main campus almost flat, setting up three branch campuses, locating learning at community colleges, and offering an extended degree program where students learn at home. In each case, technology is used to extend the “reach” of faculty.
The other cost-effective strategy is reliance on community and technical colleges. Here, Washington State has an edge. Its public two-year colleges provide the most extensive coverage in the nation. Jean Floten, president of Bellevue Community College, notes the system served 425,000 adult enrollees last year-a tenth all the state's adult population. Almost half were there for job training versus 40 percent for academic preparation.
(1)According to the author, to enroll more students, universities do not have to ________.
[ ]
A. enlarge their campuses

[ ]
A. applying new learning technology
B. using Internet and other information technology
C. teaching new technical skills

59. What does Aaron mean by saying “This is what 21st century New York City looks like.”?
A. There are hundreds of miles of new bike lanes in 21 st century New York City.
B. Drivers slow down their cars and bikes are taken off the sidewalk in New York.
C. Bikes are used as a means of transport in 21 st century New York City.
D. It’s possible to make the streets safe for pedestrians in New York.
60. According to the passage, which of the following CANNOT support the opponents of these new bike lanes?
A. Drivers lose parking spots and lanes for cars.
B. The two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents.
C. We took what used to be a full street so the road is broader than before.
D. The removal of one bike lane through a neighbourhood in Brooklyn was not supported by the majority of New Yorkers.
61. “A mandate” in Paragraph 8 was referred to a demand or command from ______.
A. the authority B. the public C. the supporters D. the government
62. What of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Ride on National Bike-to-Work Day B. A New Bike Lane Appears in New York
