Police in Hangzhou yesterday claimed to have arrested 11 people suspected of running an illegal gambling network.

“The network acted as a bridge between Chinese gamblers and overseas casinos(赌场),” said Wu Jun, spokesman for the public security bureau of Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou. “About 80 percent of the gamblers are local businessmen, and chances are that the money they bet came from their companies’ accounts,” Wu said. The underground gambling network was set up by a wealthy local businessman surnamed Li last year, he said. The gamblers could view real-time images of a casino in Philippines via the website and place bets through the agent’s account.

Li registered with the website after coughing up a 5-million-yuan deposit last March. Every time a gambler won, 17% of the winning amount would go to the website as a fee. Li received 10% of the winnings as commission, while the person who introduced the gambler to the website got a 7-percent commission.

Li ran the gambling network under a pyramid scheme. Gamblers were encouraged to bring in more people to join the website’s network in order to earn more commission.

“Li had provided a convenient but illegal platform for wealthy businessmen, who wanted to gamble,” Wu said. “Otherwise they had to travel all the way to Macao to do so.” Under the current law, gambling is prohibited all over China, except Macao. “Setting up the gambling network is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done,” Li said. “The whole thing started as a joke, but the joke went too far,” he added. “I was not short of money, I was just being greedy.”

According to Wu, the police uncovered the illegal network while investigating a local businessman, who fled without paying banks “hundreds of millions of yuan” worth of debt. The cops later discovered the man lost most of the bank’s money in Li’s virtual casino.

1. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. More people are addicted to illegal gambling.

B. Police uncovered an illegal gambling network.

C. Money can be got through the illegal network.

D. Mr. Li made gambling spread with the network.

2. According to the passage, Li ________.

B. didn’t express regret about what he had done

C. started the network just because of lack of money

D. could get a commission of 17% of the winning amount

3. The underlined word “commission” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ________.

A. price for some goods

B. salary one can get from a job

C. money given to someone freely

D. fees for one’s service in return

4. Li ran the network under a pyramid scheme because _________.

A. this scheme made the management much easier

B. it could encourage gamblers to bring in more people

C. this kind of management is popular nowadays

D. running in this way can not be uncovered easily

“Up until about five years ago, students at this school could have worn anything they wanted on Halloween,” said Rosemarie Nielson, a sixth-grade teacher at St. Theresa School, a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx where there is a prohibition on toy weapons.
“When you consider all the horrific things that have happened in recent years, including 9/11, I can’t blame any school for wanting to stay away from anything that might promote violence,” Ms. Nielson s aid.
Mary Ellen Manniello, whose daughter, Courtney, 9, is a fourth grader at St. Gabriel School, a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, said she understood why officials had banned weapons with costumes. “They’re learning more about guns from issues in the street than educational issues.”
This year, the school has gone one step further and is prohibiting all costumes at its Halloween festivities. Ms. Manniello said it had become “a chaotic scene,” with parents helping their children change into their costumes at school.
Some parents said the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes went too far and denied children a chance to express themselves.
“Halloween has always been the one day when it was acceptable for our children to be dressed like somebody they are not, like a cowboy or a pirate or a person from outer space, and now we’re taking that away from them,” said Laura Santoro, a nurse from New Milford, Conn., whose 7-year-old son, Johnny, is a second grader at Northville Elementary School there.
Ms. Santoro said that her son would dress as Capt. Jack Sparrow, the character played by Johnny Depp in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, at the school’s Halloween party, but that he would not be allowed to take a sword — part of a policy that caught her by surprise last Halloween.
“I sent my son to school last year dressed as a special force Power Ranger, and he was told that he couldn’t take along his red laser blaster, which really surprised me, because the laser is red and made of plastic and lights up, and it could never, ever be mistaken for a real gun,” Ms. Santoro said. “I mean, come on, the whole thing is getting really sad.”
68. What do you think is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce to the public the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes.
B. To state parents’ attitudes towards the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes.
C. To tell the public that children should bring any weapons for Halloween costumes.
D. To analyze the fact that the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes goes too far.
69. According to the passage, some parents understand the no-weapon policy for Halloween costumes because ____________.
A. schools should take a cautious approach to Halloween to prevent violence.
B. children are buying real guns in the street and there is always violence now.
C. those parents like to help their children change into their costumes at school.
D. children are learning more about guns from educational issues.
70. Which of the following is probably right according to the passage?
A. Children could bring any weapons into school five or six years ago.
B. The parents surveyed are those whose children are in elementary schools.
C. Guns are necessary on Halloween for children to express themselves.
D. Jack Sparrow is an actor who at one time acted as a pirate in a movie.
71. What do the underlined words “laser blaster” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. A kind of costume.                                     B. A real gun.
C. A toy weapon.                                         D. A kind of plastic.

I was in a strange city I didn’t know at all, and what’s more, I could not speak a word of the language. On my second day I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops, then got off and walked on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough, then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived, and even that I pronounced badly. I stopped to ask a newspaper-seller. He handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person.I asked was a policeman. He listened to me carefully, nodded and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were appearing on either side of me. I had come all the way into the countryside. The only thing left for me to do was find the nearest railway station.
