I sat in my car waiting in line at the gas station, but my mind was somewhere else completely. It was just a week 1 Valentine's Day.Only twenty-six months had passed by since my husband Robert Kirk's death, and I couldn't stop 2 him.

Valentine's Day had been twice as 3 for me and my husband of fifty-two years, Robert's birthday was the day after, February 15th.Every year, on the 14th of February he'd 4 me a card, signed at the bottom with“Xs(kisses)”and“Os(hugs)”.Then the next day we'd gather with the kids around a birthday cake and blow out the candles. After all those years, it wasn't 5 now to be alone.

Suddenly, out of the corner of my 6 , I could see a truck backing up towards me fast.I hit the horn(喇叭), but it was too late.Crunch! It had backed up 7 into the driver's side of my car.Looking at the damaged side view mirror and the plate-sized dent(凹痕)in the door, I almost felt crying.I made a claim on my insurance policy(按保单索赔)and 8 , the claim was pushed through.A week later, I brought my car in for 9 and rented one.I drove it home through rainy streets that seemed to 10 my feelings.

The morning of the 14th, I woke up and still had a feeling of unhappiness.I had to get out of the house. So I headed to the garage. When I got close to it, my eyes was fixed on a card on the window of the car.It was signed with“RK”, the first letters of Robert Kirk's name;“215”, his birthday; and 11 for“kisses”and“hugs”that I'd never forget.Who did this?

The next day I received a note from my elder daughter, 12 “It was a surprise!I just want you to be happy.”

Is there a magic cutoff period when children become responsible for their own actions? Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become spectators (audiences) in the lives of their children and shrug, “It’s their life,” and feel nothing?

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital  passage waiting for doctors to put a few stitches(缝线) in my son’s head.I asked, “When do you stop worrying?” The nurse said, “When they get out of the accident stage.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked continually and disrupted the class. As if to read my mind, a teacher said.“Don’t worry. They all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open.A friend said, “They’re trying to find themselves.Don’t worry; in a few years, you can stop worrying. They’ll be adults.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being weak.I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle. There was nothing I could do about it.My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

I continued to suffer from their failures, and be absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life.I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted(萦绕心头) by my mother’s warm smile and her occasional “You look pale. Are you all right? Call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?” Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry?

One of my children became quite anxious about me recently, saying, “Where were you? I’ve been calling for three days, and no one answered.I was worried.”

     I smiled a warm smile.

The author intends to tell us in the passage that_______.

A.parents long for a period when they no longer worry about their children

B.there is no time when parents have no worry about their children

C.it’s parents’ duty to worry about their children

D.there should be a period when parents don’t have to worry about their children

I had been rather proud of myself when my friends and family got the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations (违反).It was something that happened to others. But last Friday I joined the club.

I was asked to do a new project last week. On Friday morning on my way to work,I suddenly remembered that I had spent the past six weeks without considering that I had a week’s vacation planned during that time. I was very disappointed with myself for not remembering it.

The truth is that I was not paying enough attention to my driving and I did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign in front of a school. I was so distracted (思想不集中的)that I didn’t even notice I had a policeman on my tail with his lights flashing. Finally I looked in my mirror and caught on.

The policeman was rude and took my papers. Fortunately,I had everything up to date and since I had never had a ticket before, there was nothing for him to do but write me a ticket. While I was sitting there in the seat of “shame”,I felt bad. If I had been that distracted and a child had run onto the road, perhaps I would have not reacted as well as I could have. It was a wake-up call.

People at work asked me if I tried to talk my way out of it. Frankly,it never occurred to me. I felt guilty. Now I no longer have a clean driving record. Please be careful out there,as a moment’s distraction can lead to tragedy.

I sat at my seat waiting for the school paper to be passed around. I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really am.

When the paper arrived at my classroom, I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get to the first paper. With a school paper in my hands, I returned to my seat. About a month earlier, I had handed in one of, what I believed to be, my best stories. I named it Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school, Professor Cullen had said that she would include some reviews of students’ stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her rough criticism. Impressing her was very hard but I wanted to be the first to do so.

I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn’t one story that got more than three stars .I became calm and wasn’t anxious to know my review. It was long after that I heard someone shout out “Five stars?! Seriously!” from behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression of Gene’s face, “Peter, your story got five stars!” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing.

I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible .For so long I believed I wasn’t as good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of wring skills .But this review proved that I was truly a good writer and that there was a future ahead of me in the field of fiction writing. The review and the five stars meant the world of me. Those five stars became the symbol of my success.

1.How did the writer get the school paper?

A.His teacher gave it to him first

B.The publisher sent it to him first

C.His friend helped him get the first one.

D.He rushed ahead to get the first one by himself.

2.What can we learn about Professor Cullen?

A.She was very gentle to everyone.           B.She seldom praised her students.

C.She was very cold to her students.          D.She was respected by her students.

3.We can learn from this text that Peter_______.

A.had thought his story was better than those of others

B.was always anxious to know the review about him

C.didn’t know he got five stars until others told him

D.looked through a few stories that had got four stars

4.What did Professor Cullen think of Peter’s story?

A.She thought highly of it .

B.She thought it was just so-so.

C.She thought it was extremely bad

D.She doubted if it was written by him.

5.Why did the review and the five stars mean the world to Peter?

B.Because they made him happy for some time

C.Because they helped him enter a key university

D.Because they made him see his writing talents

Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?

Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!

1.What did the author’s classmates think about his report?

A. Controversial.                          B. Ridiculous.

C. Boring.                                 D. Puzzling.

2.Why was the author confused about the task?

A. He was unfamiliar with American history.

B. He followed the advice and flipped a coin.

C. He forgot his teacher’s instruction.

D. He didn’t know why the teacher gave such a task.

3.The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means _______.

A. annoyed                      B. ashamed

C. ready                         D. eager

4.In the end, the author turned things around _______.

A. by redoing his task

B. through his own efforts

C. with the help of his grandfather

D. under the guidance of his headmaster

Is there a magic cutoff period when children become responsible for their own actions? Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, “It’s their life,” and feel nothing?

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital passage waiting for doctors to put a few stitches(缝线) in my son’s head. I asked, “When do you stop worry?” The nurse said, “When they get out of the accident stage.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked continually and disrupted the class. As if to read my mind, a teacher said. “Don’t worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, “ They’re trying to find themselves, Don’t worry, in a few years, you can stop worrying. They’ll be adults.” My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being weak. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle, there was nothing I could do about it. My mother just smiled faintly and said nothing.

I continued to suffer from their failures, and be absorbed in their disappointments. My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life. I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted(萦绕心头) by my mother’s warm smile and her occasional “You look pale. Are you all right?” Call me minute you get home. Are you depressed about something ?” Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry?

One of my children became quite anxious about me recently, saying, “ Where were you ? I’ve been calling for three days, and no one answered . I was worried.”

  I smiled a warm smile

A parents long for a period when they no longer worry about their children.

B there is no time when parents have no worry about their children.

A her mother shared the same idea as the nurse

B her mother didn’t agree with the nurse

C her mother thought the nurse was lying

I had been rather proud of myself when my friends and family got the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations (违反).It was something that happened to others. But last Friday I joined the club.

I was asked to do a new project last week. On Friday morning on my way to work,I suddenly remembered that I had spent the past six weeks without considering that I had a week’s vacation planned during that time. I was very disappointed with myself for not remembering it. The fact  is that I was not paying enough attention to my driving and I did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign in front of a school.

3.What made the writer unable to focus on her driving?

A.Planning how to spend the vacation.

D.Missing her children.

4.From the experience, the writer has probably learnt ________.

A.what is really important to her
