Next Halloween, a small vegetable that looks like a pumpkin may appear in a garden near you. The
vegetable is a type of pepper that is called "Lil' Pumpkin." It's very special because it has orange,
pumpkin-like fruit.
You might think that all vegetables are grown to provide food to eat. But some vegetables are grown
mainly for the lively color and holiday spirit that they bring to gardens. These are called "ornamentals
(观赏性植物)." Just like lights decorate a Christmas tree, they decorate a garden.
The peppers were bred(培育) by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists John Stommel and
Robert Griesbach. Another pepper the scientists developed is called "Pepper Jack." Because Pepper
Jack has orange and black cone shaped(锥形的) fruit, it might remind you of the popular Halloween
treat "candy corn."
Stommel says that vegetable crops such as peppers were first widely grown in Europe in the 15th
century. At that time, people liked these crops more because they looked pretty than because they
provided food.
Back then, when a gardener grew plants for decoration and plants for food, the garden was called a
"potager." An example of this is the large gardens on the lawns(草坪) of castles and very large homes
where kings and queens lived, One of those large royal homes was the French king's palace at
Versailles during the 1600's. The palace is still there today, and people from all over the world still go
there to visit and see the gardens.
Today, Stommel says using vegetables as decorations in gardens has become popular again.
So you might be wondering, if these peppers are for decoration, can people eat them? Yes, but the
fruit from both of these peppers has a sharp taste (kind of like onions!)
These peppers are scheduled to become available in mid2011. These pretty peppers can be grown
in containers and also in garden beds. They grow best with plenty of light and warm temperatures,
Stommel says.
1. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Different kinds of peppers.
B. The history of peppers.

A. They are used to decorate Christmas trees.
B. They are grown mainly to provide food to eat.
C. Their fruits have different shapes.
D. Their fruits are the same color.
3. The underlined word "they" in Paragraph 2 refers to "______".
A. these vegetables
B. these holidays
C. these lights
D. these scientists
4. According to the passage, a potager was ______.
A. the place where kings and queens lived
B. the garden in the French king's palace
C. a place providing vegetables for the royal homes
D. a garden with plants for decoration and for food

“I pity the empress. Poor empress.” “Do you think Zhen Huan really loves the emperor?” From campuses to offices, from shopping malls to the streets, talk about Legend of Zhen Huan is everywhere.

Unlike other long TV series, Legend of Zhen Huan, the 76-episode Qing dynasty drama series, has kept attracting new audiences along the way. It has enjoyed widespread popularity on the Chinese mainland over the past months.

The story is seemingly the same as those dramas which look into the lives of women in the imperial palace. It focuses on plots and intrigues(阴谋) within the Inner Palace during Emperor Yongzheng’s reign.

The heroine, Zhen Huan, initially a kind and innocent young lady, enters the emperor’s harem(后宫) of concubines. Discovering that the palace is a cruel and harsh place, Zhen learns how to survive on her own.

However, Legend of Zhen Huan seems to arouse more discussion than any drama series. Why? Some experts say it’s because it’s a well-made series from inside out.

Niu Hanting, deputy editor-in-chief of Art Panorama magazine, told Xinhua News Agency that the sets, props and costumes are carefully chosen. And the screenplay and dialogue are well-written. “The series takes care of every detail a good period drama should have,” Niu said. “From that aspect, it’s no coincidence that Zhen Huan could be big.” More importantly, Niu added, the TV series strikes a chord among audiences in different ways. “For example, as a woman, Zhen is hurt by the man she once loved. And as a newcomer to the palace, she finds herself caught in the fierce infighting and she has to survive,” Niu said, “Everyone may find themselves in Zhen’s position at a certain point.”

Then it’s not hard to understand why the story of Zhen Huan is even seen as a survival guide for newcomers in the workplace. Its director, Zheng Xiaolong, once admitted that in terms of society today, the “promotion” of Zhen Huan reflects a person’s career path in some way. “Whether the principles can be applied in today’s society, or not, I want to make the story as real as possible,” Zheng told Sina.com. “There are many fairytale-like series that make audiences ignore or avoid reality, and the complexity of humanity.” “But Legend of Zhen Huan, is a series that makes you think.”

3.When Legend of Zhen Huan finds the palace is a cruel one, she ______.

A. learns to survive on her own

A. thinks Zhen has had effects on newcomers

B. makes little of Legend of Zhen Huan

The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperatures could mean the end for some migrating animals.

Migrating or mobile animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold of winter to warmer areas. Birds may fly from one part of the World to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles(海龟) cover vast areas of ocean. The report says that changes in any one of the places which these animals use can cause serious harm. "Obviously these animals have developed their travelling patterns over thousands of years. But climate change is almost certain to be extreme over the next 25 to 50 years and it is extremely unlikely that these animals can change their habits fast enough, "said the report author Dr. Robert Hepworth.

Hardest hit by rising temperatures are turtles. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles produce far more female eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtle birthing sites are producing only females, the report says. It also provides evidence that some turtles are more likely to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.

With birds, the main problem is climate-related damage to important areas at either end of the travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of climate-related changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more violent storms, the report concludes.

Other animals picked out as particularly in danger include:

the North Atlantic Right Whale, whose main food (tiny shrimp) is disturbed by the change in ocean flows.

·the White-Nose Dolphin, which is out-competed by other kinds of dolphins in warmer waters.

The report is not all bad news. Even with major climatic changes, protecting the environment can still help mobile animals to recover. "We need governments to start taking action at the national and international level. The clock is running," said Dr. Hepworth. And some animals are already adapting, with the report mentioning whales that are changing their feeding behaviour, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.

1. What is the main topic of the text ?

A.The effect of climate change on migrating animals.

B.How animals are adapting to changes in temperature.

C.The actions required to save migrating animals.

D.The need for government policies to prevent global warming.

2.By saying "The clock is running" in the last paragraph, Dr. Hepworth means that" ______"

A.it may be too late to save some animals

B.it is time to start protecting the animals

C.there is not much time to solve the problem

D.it takes time to complete the actions

A.They will only produce female babies.

3.WhVich of the following is mentioned as a consequence of rising temperatures?

A.More storms will affect the ability of whales to find their feeding grounds.

B.20 percent of all birds are likely to die out because of land loss.

C.Migrating animals are likely to start adapting to the changes more quickly.

D.Warmer oceans will increase the competition between different kinds of dolphins.

4.What can be inferred about turtles from the text?

A.They are the only animals besides humans that suffer from cancer.

B.They have traditionally lived longer than other ocean-based animals.

C.Those born nearer a hotter area are more likely to be female.

D.Most kinds of turtles are likely to die out within 50 years.

For most students, school is over and summer fun is here. Even kids who are going to summer school don't need to be cooped up indoors during these bright sunny days. Why? Thanks to technology, many kids now have the option of attending "virtual" summer schools online.
These "virtual" classes are not new. Many colleges and universities offer online courses where the students never meet; they correspond with their teachers and classmates on the web. Even some traditional schools add to daily classes with internet-based assignments and feedback.
There are a lot of benefits to online schooling, and that's why public schools have started participating in this non-traditional type of education. Instead of students riding the bus, going to class, eating lunch at school, and going home in the early afternoon, they can now log on(登录)at any time of day or night and learn. This flexible online option requires just as much work and participation as normal summer school. However, the timing is different.
Online summer school is not for all students, just like it isn’t for all adults. The student needs to be an excellent reader in order to obtain as much information as possible from the lectures. In addition, students must understand computers and be self motivated(激发)in order to complete the class successfully.
If the students meet these requirements, then online summer school has many advantages. Written lectures can be read and reread until the student understands them. The students can email each other and the teacher if they need help. Students who participate in online summer school often earn higher grades because the teachers can answer more questions without slowing down the entire class progress. And because of this new technology, summer school students can still go to the beach, travel around the world, and take family vacations!
【小题1】Online schooling has the following advantages and benefits EXCEPT ____.

A.Students needn’t have as much work or participation as in traditional schools.
B.Students don’t have to go to school in crowded buses.
C.Students can have more time to understand the lessons.
D.Teachers and students have more time to arrange their own things flexibly.
【小题2】What does the underlined word “option” probably mean?
A.chance of expressing opinionB.chance of expressing wishes
C.right of demandingD.right of choosing
【小题3】Online summer school is not suitable for ____.
A.adults or children who are too old
B.students who are poor in reading
C.those who don’t master good computer technology
D.students who can’t finish homework on their own
【小题4】Which of the following people is most supposed to choose online schooling?
A.A child in the kindergarten.B.A primary school student.
C.A government office clerk.D.A child whose parents are working.

Put yourself in these tourists’ position. You are walking an icy mountain path in the Alps in Europe. Suddenly you spot a body on the ground, face downward and stuck to the ice. You think someone may have been murdered or in a fatal accident. So you rush back and call the police. The police, however, quickly realize that this body is different from others they’ve found on the mountain. For one thing, it is mostly undamaged. For another, its skin is dried out, like a mummy’s(木乃伊). And there is an old small stone knife beside the body.

The body turned out be much older than the tourists could have guessed. When specialists(专家)had a chance to examine it, they discovered it had been there for about five thousand years!

How could a body stay preserved for all this time? Two things probably helped. First, the place where the man died was somewhat sheltered, so animals couldn’t get at it. Then he was quickly covered by falling snow. Wind blowing through the snow probably “freeze-dried” his body, removing all moisture(水分) from it.

Objects found with the body told something about the Iceman’s life. He wore a well-made fur jacket and trousers. He clearly had been hunting, because he carried arrows, and animal bones were nearby. He also had a grass cushion for sitting or sleeping on. Perhaps he was tired when he lay down for the last time.

The body was found in 1991, when some of the ice on the mountain melted. Searching for the cause of the Iceman’s death, scientists put the body back into cold conditions---and hoped.

1. What does the underlined word “spot” in the first paragraph probably mean?

A. lay       B. dig          C. find         D. carry

2. Which of the following is NOT the reason that the police realize that the body is different from others?

A. The body’s skin is like a mummy’s.    B. Beside the body is an old small stone knife.

C. The body is much older than others.   D. The body is mostly undamaged.

3. At what time of a year was the Iceman probably died?

A. Early fall.   B. Late spring.    C. Summer.    D. Winter.

4. This passage is mainly to _____________

A. tell us what life was like 5, 000 years ago.

B. warn us not to go to the Alps.

C. introduce a mysterious Iceman to us.

D. explain the mystery of the Alps.

Begin doing the work you love as soon as possible, even if you don’t get paid for it, or if you can only work at it part-time. Albert Einstein was unable to get a job as a physics professor. He could have said to himself, “Well, I just don’t have the work relative to physics. I should give up on it and settle for something else.” Instead, he wrote the two most famous papers when he was employed as a patent  clerk. After their publication, there was not a major university in the world that would not have been glad to have him on their staff.
If you want to work as an artist and you are making a living as a waiter, don’t think of yourself as a waiter who hopes one day to become an artist. That puts the work you love somewhere off in the distant future. Rather, think of yourself as an artist, supporting yourself by waiter tables—and paint, or draw as much as you can. It is possible to earn a living wage as a waiter working 24 hours a week. That leaves plenty of time to devote to training or developing your craft(手艺)in the off hours.
While seeking the work you love, it helps to expand your awareness  into the universe of all possibilities. You don’t want to be limited to the ideas of what you should do or what you have done before. Having opened to all possibilities, you can make a final decision and select the work you love as your own.
Doing the work you love requires that you be equally comfortable with the imaginative and the practical. It requires the ability to dream big dreams and the ability to face and master all the little details that make dreams come true.
【小题1】According to the passage, perhaps Einstein once said to himself, “_______.”

A.Well, I just don’t have the work relative to physics. I should give up on it and settle for
something else
B.The job is just what I want, I should work very hard at it
C.I have to support myself by working as a patent clerk now, but I won’t give physics up
D.I must wait until I find my favorite job
【小题2】If a person works 24 hours a week, he can________.
A.have enough spare time for his hobbies
B.have no time left to make his dream come true
C.do nothing else
D.make a good living
【小题3】Which of the following is not implied in the last paragraph?
A.Sometimes the imaginative is different from the practical.
B.We have to take care of a lot of details before we make our dreams come true.
C.We shall do practical things rather than dream.

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

1.Online schooling has the following advantages and benefits EXCEPT ____.

A.Students needn’t have as much work or participation as in traditional schools.

B.Students don’t have to go to school in crowded buses.

C.Students can have more time to understand the lessons.

D.Teachers and students have more time to arrange their own things flexibly.

2.What does the underlined word “option” probably mean?

A.chance of expressing opinion

B.chance of expressing wishes

C.right of demanding

D.right of choosing

3.Online summer school is not suitable for ____.

A.adults or children who are too old

B.students who are poor in reading

C.those who don’t master good computer technology

D.students who can’t finish homework on their own

4.Which of the following people is most supposed to choose online schooling?

A.A child in the kindergarten.

B.A primary school student.

C.A government office clerk.

D.A child whose parents are working.
