China launched its fifth Beidou orbiter into space on Sunday morning, moving it one step closer to its goal of building a navigation(导航) and positioning satellite network.
The Beidou, or Compass, system is being built to rival the US-developed GPS, the European Union's Galileo and Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System. It can allow travelers, drivers and military officials to know their locations.
The fifth orbiter was launched on top of a Long March 3A carrier rocket at 5:30 am on Sunday from Xichang of Southwest China's Sichuan province.
It is the third Compass satellite launched this year, following launches on Jan 17 and June 2.
The short interval of less than two months since the last launch demonstrated that "the country is stepping into a busy period of launching the Compass satellites", an unnamed official in charge of the project said last month.
The first two orbiters were launched in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
Sun Jiadong, the Beidou program's chief designer, said on June 21 in a TV interview that China would launch 13 to 15 Beidou navigation satellites into orbit by 2012 to form a network that provides regional service covering the neighboring areas.
And in about 10 years, the network would be expanded to include more than 30 satellites covering the globe, he said.
The system is a crucial part of the country's space infrastructure for providing navigation and positioning services in transportation, meteorology, petroleum prospecting, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security.
In addition, a global positioning system is crucial to any country's national security and defense, said Ran Chengqi, an official in charge of the program, referring to the fact that the US initially built its GPS system for military purposes.
It is unimaginable for China to go without such a system, he said.
Earlier reports cited(引用) Song Xiaojun, a Beijing-based military expert, as saying that 90 percent of the world's current weapons systems need a global positioning system.

Tokyo - Drivers in China are no longer in a hurry to own Toyota Motor Corp's cars.
Neil Hu, a sales manager at a Toyota dealership in Beijing, said he has stopped charging a 5,000 yuan ($732) premium to customers who want to skip the waiting list for RAV4 sport- utility vehicles. He took the initiative after the Japanese carmaker recalled 75,552 of the SUVs in China last month to fix gas pedals that may stick.
"I heard the situation in the US is pretty bad for Toyota," Hu said. "The recall has impacted us as well."
Toyota, which grew more slowly than competitors in China in 2009, will likely lose more market share and see a decline in local profit margin this year, analysts say. The carmaker has relied on a reputation for quality and safety to sell high margin, mid- to large-size models even as the world's biggest auto market shifts to cheaper, smaller cars, encouraged by government incentives.
With Toyota's brand damaged by global recalls of millions of vehicles, profit margins for its SUVs and Camry and Crown sedans may shrink, said Ashvin Chotai, London-based managing director of Intelligence Automotive Asia Ltd, an industry consultant.
"With this recall saga, Toyota's premium pricing power in China is gone," Chotai said. "Toyota's cars don't have enough good value for money."
Toyota has lost $24.5 billion in market capitalization this year as it recalled over 8 million cars globally to fix defects linked to unintended acceleration. The company faces at least 118 class actions in the US and at least 36 individual lawsuits claiming deaths and injuries caused by sudden acceleration of Toyota or Lexus vehicles.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda flew directly to Beijing on March 2 to apologize for the vehicle defects, after attending US Congressional hearings about the recalls in Washington. He skipped Europe's Geneva auto show, underscoring the growing importance of the Chinese market.
Toyota rose for a fifth straight day in Tokyo, advancing 0.9 percent to 3,580 yen as of 9:44 am local time. The carmaker's shares have fallen 7.7 percent this year.
The company's February China sales rose 30 percent to 45,400 vehicles, underperforming the overall passenger-car.
【小题1】According to the passage, why did Toyota carmaker recall their cars in China last month? _____________

A.Because it faced law suits in the US
B.Because there were problems with the cars.
C.Because of the importance of the Chinese market
D.Because the customers are not satisfied with the charging of a 5,000 Yuan premium.
【小题2】What does the underlined phrase“take the initiative” mean?
A.took the adviceB.changed his mindC.took the actionD.made the decision
【小题3】Why did Toyota president Akio Toyota skip Europe’s Geneva auto show?
A.Because he did not think it important
B.Because he was not satisfied with the hearing in the US
C.Because he attached importance to the Chinese Market
D.Because he needed to make an apology to Chinese
【小题4】After the global recalls of millions vehicles, Toyota will be impacted in the following aspects, EXCEPT_________.
A.Its brand will be damaged
B.Its profit margins will shrink
C.It will have to face law suits
D.The president will be fired
【小题5】Where can read the passage? __________

The southwest of Australia has been named as one of 25”hot spots” for future species extinction(灭绝)because of global warming.A new study says global warming will become a top cause of extinction across the world, with thousands of species of plantsand animals likely to be wiped out in the coming decades.

According to the study, global warming ranks among the most serious threats to the planet’s biodiversity and, under some conditions, may be more than that due to deforestation. This study provides even stronger scientific evidence that global warming will result in catastrophic(灾难性的)species losses across the planet.Last month,a UN study said humans were responsible for the worst extinction and urged extra efforts to reach a UN target of slowing the rate of losses by 2010.

Scientists disagree about how far global warming is to blame compared with other human threats such as deforestation, pollution and the introduction of some species to new habitats. But the new study looks at the 25 “hot spots”—areas that contain a big concentration of plants and animals—and predicts that 11.6 percent of all species, with a range from 1 to 43 percent, could be driven to extinction if levels of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere were to keep rising in the next 100 years.

The range would mean the loss of thousands of species. The study gave a wide range because of uncertainties, for instance, about the ability of animals or plants to move towards the poles if the climate warmed. Rare plants, tortoises or birds found only on the southern tip of Africa cannot move south because the nearest land is thousands of miles away in Antarctica.

1.According to the passage, which of the following about Australia is TRUE?

A.Australia possesses the richest species in the world.

B.Australia is the country with the highest rate of extinction.

C.The species in the southwest of Australia will be easily affected by global warming.

D.Australia will have the highest temperature in the world.

2.According to the passage,all the 25”hot spots”-------- .

A.are rich in plants and animals

B.are lacking in natural resources

C.lost most of their plants in 2010

D.will be much hotter than the rest of the world

3.We can infer if the climate warms, the animals in Australia will most probably move to the ______ .

A.north            B.east              C.west             D.south

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Australia Named as Extinction”Hot Spot”

B.Global Warming and Species Extinction

C.Global Warming is Number One Killer

D.Australia on the Edge of Extinction

PEOPLE who have had a painful experience may wish they could wipe the memory from their minds. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University, US, say that this may someday be possible.
A drug remains far off, but researchers have laid a foundation with their discovery that proteins can be removed from the brain’s fear center to cut memories forever.
Previous research had already shown that a special behavior therapy (治疗) could cut painful memories. But relapse (复发) was possible because the memory hadn’t necessarily disappeared.
By looking at that process, Richard Huganir and Roger Clem, two researchers from Johns Hopkins University, discovered a “window of vulnerability (脆弱的窗口)” when proteins are created. The proteins help signals travel within the brain as painful memories are made. Because the proteins are unstable, they can be easily removed with drugs or behavior therapy to cut memories.
Researchers used mice to find the window, but think the process would be the same in humans. They used electric shocks to make the mice fear a certain sound. The sound triggered (触发) the creation of the proteins, called calcium-permeable (钙通透性) AMPARS, which formed for a day or two in the fear centers of the mice’s brains.
The researchers are working on ways to reopen the window by recalling (唤醒) the painful memory and using drugs to remove the protein. They published their report online last month in Science Express.
Their research has drawn interest and concern from experts in mental healthcare.
Kate Farinholt, a mental health expert with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Maryland, US, said many people suffering from a painful event might benefit from erasing a memory. “Erasing a memory and then everything bad built on that is an amazing idea, and I can see all sorts of potential ,” she said.
But there are a lot of unanswered questions, too.
“Completely deleting a memory is a little scary. How do you remove a memory without removing a part of someone’s life,” Farinholt said. “And is it best to do that, considering that people grow and learn from their experiences?”
【小题1】What have researchers at Johns Hopkins University found recently?

A.A new drug to erase painful memories from human brains.
B.A special behavior therapy to erase painful memories.
C.Removing certain proteins from the brain can wipe painful memories.
D.Erasing memory damages a patient’s brain functions.
【小题2】What makes it possible to erase painful memories according to Paragraph 4?

B.The unstable character of the proteins in the brain.
C.The strength of the signals the proteins send.
D.The drugs that can stop the formation of memories.
【小题3】Which of the following shows the stages of the process done on mice?

c. fear proteins created in mice brains   d. making mice recall painful memories
A.a-b-c-dB.d-a-c-bC.b-c-d-aD.c-b-d-a
【小题4】What is Kate Farinholt’s opinion of the research?

PART FOUR WRITING SECTION A

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each blank. The Chilean earthquake, measuring 8.8 – magnitude, which struck early Saturday morning, released 500 times the energy of the 7.0 – magnitude quake that hit Haiti last month, a geophysicist told CBS’ “The Early Show. ” Tsunami warnings were issued for much of the Pacific, including Hawaii, following the quake that struck near the Chilean coast.

“When the earthquake occurred, it moved the land and then it moved the water causing the tsunami,” said U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Jessica Sigala. “And the coastal areas of Chile have already noticed the wave heights up to about 7 feet.”

Sigala said Hawaiians can expect to see the waves from this tsunami around 11:20 a.m. local time (about 4:20 p.m. ET). “So we have to wait and see how big the waves will be.”

“It's not so much the height [of the wave] but it's the width, it's how long the duration, and then it's also the speed at which it's traveling,” said co-anchor Kelly Cobiella “Correct me if I'm wrong, but these waves are traveling at the speed of a jetliner, about 500 miles per hour?”

“That's correct. It's a big block of water coming onto the land,” Sigala said.

Chile has already experienced several aftershocks following the quake.

“Aftershocks are definitely a concern,” said Sigala. "We always see aftershocks with a large quake and a shallow quake, which this one was. And as of right now, we've located about maybe 15 aftershocks and those are of the larger kind. I'm sure they felt much more than that.”

“A shallow earthquake just means that it happened pretty close to the surface,” said Sigala. “And because of that the energy is really close to the surface, where all the buildings and people are.”

50 deaths caused by aftershocks have been reported, according to the national emergency agency, adding the estimate casualties to 960.
