Now let’s compare the Chinese diet with the Western diet. Some say that the Western food is better than the Chinese food. Do you think so?
First, let’s make a standard(标准) of the better diet. We don’t have to care much about the shape, the colour and the taste of the food. We say the one that has more nutrition, is easier to be digested and absorbed(吸收) by the body and then makes us more energetic should be the better. In this way, I believe, our Chinese food should be better than the Western food. Why?
I think the Western food contains too much fat and sugar. I know both fat and sugar are a kind of nutrition we need in our body, but too much of them will make your body harmed. That’s why so many westerners get ill when young. Besides, westerners have to use knives, forks
and spoons to help them have their meals. It seems that they couldn’t have their meals without force.
But in Chinese food we have those mainly from plants including their seeds, leaves and roots together with a little meat such as chicken, fish, pork, mutton and so on. With so much plant food we can get enough calories as it is rich in fiber, protein, calcium and fat. With a little meat we can make our body even stronger. Besides, we use chopsticks, bowls and plates to help us have our meals. All of these make us harmonious to nature and everybody around us. So I say our Chinese food makes us wise, happy, healthy and wealthy.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The taste of the Chinese food.
B. The taste of the Western food.
C. The comparison between the two kinds of food.
D. The tastes of both of the two kinds of foods.
2. Which is the standard of measuring a diet?
A. Quantity of nutrition in the food.
B. Whether it is easy to be digested and absorbed.
C. Whether it can offer us enough energy.
D. All of the above.
3. Which is the writer’s attitude towards diet according to the passage?
A. Western food should be better because it contains much fat and sugar.
B. Western food should be better because contains much calories.
C. Chinese food should be better because it doesn’t contain too much fat or sugar
D. Chinese food should be better because it doesn’t have much nutrition.
4. According to the passage, which statement is true?
A. The standard (标准) of a better diet depends on the shape, color and the taste of the food.
B. Fat and sugar in the food do harm to our body.
C. Westerners use knives, chopsticks and spoons to help them have meals while Chinese use bowls, forks and plates.
D. Chinese food and the way Chinese have meals show Chinese are more harmonious with nature.

Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.
“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind’s earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic.
When the wind is from the west
All the waves that cannot rest
To the east must thunder on
Where the bright tree of the sun
Is rooted in the ocean’s breast.
As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling.
It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿) nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too: unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
In today’s world, the most successful companies are the ones who understand how important it is to make contacts around the world. However, doing business in different countries is very rarely simple. It is important to be aware of the local customs and traditions of the people you are dealing with, which is the best way to impress your hosts.
One example that comes to mind is of a German company that recently tried to gain a new contract in South Korea. The German visitors arrived at the Korean company’s office early in the morning and spent the whole day in long meetings. By the evening, the Germans were so tired that they politely declined the Korean’s invitation to go out for dinner and drinks, since they wanted to return to their hotel and get some rest. The Germans did not understand that in South Korea business talks often continue into the evening. The Germans only came to realize that they offended their hosts after they had lost the contract.
In Europe or the USA, business is rarely discussed into the evening. However, it is important to be on time for a meeting. If you are late, your hosts may think you do not care. In fact, it is better to arrive at least ten minutes before the meeting starts. This way, you can show how keen you are to do business with them, and you will also have time to talk with your hosts before you sit down to discuss business.
However, in many countries meetings may not start on time. There are a number of reasons for this, such as transport difficulties due to poor roads, unusual weather and the cost of cars. Sometimes the time of day is also important. In South America and many countries in southern Europe, people have a short sleep for a couple of hours after lunch. Therefore, if you try to arrange a meeting for the early afternoon, you may find that not many people will attend, or that you hosts will be in a bad mood.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)

Watercress is positively packed with healthy vitamins and minerals. The writings of both the Romans and the Ancient Greeks record the consumption of watercress by all classes. Hippocrates, “the father of medicine”, was so convinced that watercress was a great healer that he built his first hospital next to a stream so that he could grow a plentiful supply of the shiny green leaves for his patients. The Romans chewed watercress in large quantities, believing that it would cure baldness. They, too, looked with favor on watercress as a salad.
Watercress sandwiches were traditionally a breakfast item in nineteenth-century Europe. The most basic type of watercress sandwich has two pieces of white bread with a mixture of butter and watercress greens . A nickname(绰号)for the vegetable, in fact, was “poor man’s bread”, because watercress was often eaten on its own for breakfast by families that could not afford the bread to go with it.
Watercress is a member of the mustard(芥菜) family. It contains vitamins C(66mg per 100g), K and A, and is also a valuable source of minerals such as iron, potassium, copper and calcium. The mustard oils in its silky leaves and stems(茎)contain an ingredient known as PEITC. Recent research has proved that PEITC can prevent the growth of cancer cells and, in some cases, actually destroy them.
The best watercress has silky green leaves without any marks and has undamaged stems, The older the plant, the darker are its leaves and the thicker its stems. This means a higher concentration of oils and vitamins. Young watercress, on the other hand, may be harvested after only twenty-eight days growth and has a milder taste. It is best to eat watercress fresh and raw , to keep more of its valuable nutrients, but it can be lightly cooked and used as an alternative to spinach—another dark green vegetable—in various recipes. From soups to salads, watercress is now considered around the world as a natural and healthy super food.
1.From paragraph 1, we can learn that________.
A.watercress is usually grown in wet areas
B.the ancient Greeks only used watercress for medicine
C.watercress is the most ancient vegetable known to man
D.the Romans rubbed watercress on their heads to cure baldness
2.The underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refers to “_________”.
A.butter B.watercress C.breakfast D. bread
3.Which of the following is TRUE about watercress?
A.It belongs to the same family as spinach.
B.It contains mustard oils only in leaves.
C.It can help guard against cancer.
D.It is rich in vitamins C and B.
4.Compared with older watercress, young watercress .
A.has lighter green leaves
B.contains more minerals
C.is better for medical use
D.is more suitable for eating raw
5.What would be the best title for the text?
A.The history of watercress B.watrcress, a medicinal plant
C.Watercress, the amazing food D.New findings about watercress

Iceland has the highest birth rate in Europe, the highest divorce rate, and the highest percentage of women working outside the home. Such statistics are often evidence of an unhappy, troublesome society, with loads of children, broken homes and absent mothers. But Iceland is the exception — its citizens are apparently the happiest in the world. New rankings from the United Nations rate Iceland as the best country in the world to live in.
Perhaps the country’s geographic location contributes to Icelanders’ happiness. Located in the middle of the North Atlantic, with Greenland as its nearest neighbor, Iceland is free from the taboos that cause so much suffering elsewhere. For instance, people who divorce are not looked down upon by the society.
Icelanders’ ancestors are the Vikings, a north European people who invaded European coasts from the beginning of the 8th through the 10th century. This tradition of getting out into the world lives on in modern-day Iceland. Practically all Icelanders have studied or worked in other countries, and most speak English. Perhaps as a result, Iceland’s economic policies combine the best of those from Europe and the US to create its own welfare system.
Indeed, the country is rich in writers, painters, film makers and accomplished musicians. There’s Sigur Ros, a post-rock band that plays to the highest standards all over the world. Half the population appears to have written a book.
“Iceland has terrible nature, with its bitter ever-changing weather,” said Haraldur Jonsson, a painter, video and performance artist. “We cannot escape it. So we find ways to live with it. We have to have a rich life to fill the empty spaces.”

South Africa is a troubled land. It is rich in gold, uranium, and diamonds. It has modern cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. But it also has a severe race problem.
How did this come about? South Africa has about 16 million people. Nearly 11 million are Negroes. About three million are white. Most of them are of Dutch descent; the rest are of English descent. About two million people are Asians or are of mixed blood.
But the people of Dutch descent, called Afrikaners control the government. The blacks cannot vote. The Afrikaners keep the races separated. This policy is called apartheidaprtness. Most of the world's nations are against apartheid.
Apartheid means that the blacks must live on “reserves” that make up only a small part of the land. They are very poor. Some go to the cities to find a better life. But often they must work in the mines for a little money. They are also forced to live apart from the whites. To enter a white area, they must have a pass book. If they do not have a pass book, they can be arrested. Because of the rough treatment, most of South Africa's blacks (and other no-whites) are against white rule. They want to rule themselves.
Also, some white people in South Africa do not like the way the blacks are treated. Of them is the country's greatest writer, Alan Paton. Paton used to be a school teacher. Later he became principle of a reform school. While on a trip to Europe in 1946, he got the ideas for his book Cry, the Beloved Country.
