It was no wonder I was not looking forward to entering ninth grade. High school is well-known for being a battleground, where everyone seems to be 36 through physical changes, emotional mood swings, and low self-respect. For me, 37 was my punishment.

"Stand straight and tall," he would say, as I unsuccessfully tried to shrink (使缩小) myself. Moreover, each time, I would embarrassedly obey. Even at age 15, I understood that his advice was about 47 than just feet and inches.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn Europe. When German soldiers 48 his hometown, he wound up joining the Soviet army to fight 49 his country's freedom. "Stand straight, stand tall," meant something else back then.
_50 the war, he boarded a boat for 51 , and on January 27, 1947, he stepped onto the dock in Manhattan. He was hungry and 52 from seasickness. All alone in a new country, he was 53 about his future. Still, he marched head-on into the streets of New York. Soon he met 54 European immigrants, each of them trying to find his or her own way. If they could do it, why couldn't he? "Stand straight, stand tall," he would remind himself. He felt his faith 55 . When he walked into the church that first time, he walked in proudly.

On my first day of teaching, all my classes are going well. 1 a teacher was going to be something easy and sure, I decided. Then came Period 7, the last class of the day.
As I walked 2 the room, I heard furniture crash. Rounding the corner, I saw one boy pinning 3 to the floor. “Listen, you retard!” yelled the one on the bottom. “I don't 4 a damn about your sister!”
“You keep your hands 5 her, you hear me?” The boy on 6 threatened.
I drew 7 my short frame and asked them to stop 8 . Suddenly 14 pairs of eyes were fixed on my face. I knew I did not 9 convincing. Glaring at each other and me, the two boys slowly 10 their seats. Dumbstruck, I 17 into my chair and wondered 18 I should have become a teacher. Was the only 19 for problems like this to get out? I told myself I'd suffer for one year, and after my marriage the next summer I'd do something 20 rewarding.

Some ten years ago, I was in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Smith gave a physics 1 to our class. When the papers were 2 she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the 3 mistakes through the test. There was nothing really new about cheating in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs Smith 4 even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to remain after class.
I was one of the twelve. Mrs Smith asked 5 questions, and she didn't scold(责备) us 6 . Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the word “Honesty”. She then ordered us to 7 the word into our exercise-books one hundred times. I don't 8 about the other eleven boys. In my opinion. I can say it was the most important single 9 of my life.
Many years after being introduced to the word, it 10 seemed to me the best, because it gives us 11 to measure ourselves rather than others. 12 of us are asked to make 13 decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called 14 daily to make a great many personal decisions. 15 the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket 16 turned over to the policeman? Should the 17 change received at the store be foregotten or 18 ? Nobody will know except 19 . But you have to live with yourself, and it is always 20 to live with someone you respect.
