As you read this, nearly答案解析

阅读理解

As you read this, nearly 80,000 Americans are waiting for a new heart, kidney or some other organ that can save their life.Tragically about 6,000 of them will die this year-nearly twice as many people as died in the Sept.11 attacks-because they won't get their transplant in time.86% of Americans say they support organ donation, but only 20% actually sign up to do it.

Part of the problem is the way we handle organ donation.Americans who want to make this sort of gift have to opt in-that is, indicate on a driver's license that when they die, they want their organs to be made available. Many European and Asian countries take the opposite approach. In Singapore, for example, all residents receive a letter when they come of age informing them that their organs may be donated unless they object. In Belgium, which adopted a similar presumed-consent system 12 years ago, less than 2% of the population has decided to opt out.

Further complicating the situation in the U.S.is the fact that whatever decision you make can be overruled by your family. The final say is left to your surviving relatives, who must make up their minds in a few hours after brain death has been declared. There are as many as 50 body parts that can save or transform the life of some others, but for many families lost in grief, the idea of operating on a loved one is more than they can bear. The U.S like all medically advanced societies has struggled to find a way to balance an individual's right over his body with society's need to save others from death.Tommy Thompson, Health Secretary, last spring announced plans to encourage donations.Perhaps it is time that the government considered improving the system.

(1)

What is most Americans' attitude towards the organ donation?

[ ]

A.

Tragical

B.

Doubtful

C.

Supportive

D.

Objective

(2)

The underlined term“presumed-consent”in Paragraph 2 means ________.

[ ]

A.

their organs should be donated whether they agree or not

B.

they agree that their organs will be donated after death

C.

operating on a dead body is inhuman

D.

they are sure to be happy after they decide to donate their organs

(3)

It call be inferred from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.

Americans have a long tradition of organ donation

B.

all the states in America resist the presumed-consent system

C.

it's not easy to find a way to serve the society's need

D.

the government is not active in solving the problem

(4)

What is probably to be discussed in the next paragraph?

[ ]

A.

Meet society's need to save others.

B.

Find a way to balance an individual's right.

C.

Make a plan to encourage the organ donation.

D.

Improve the organ-donation system.

Treasure Island isn’t a true story, but the characters do seem to leap out of the pages alive, armed to the teeth and ready to go treasure hunting. But you will find, as you read this book, that although pirates can be murderous and treacherous(奸诈的), they can also be cowardly, superstitious, and easily led.As it turns out, that is fortunate for Jim Hawkins.

It's a brilliant story.Billy Bones, a retired seaman, comes to live at the Admiral Benbow inn.Jim is just a boy, but he can see that Billy Bones is a nervous man, always on the look-out for strangers arriving at the inn.And well he might be nervous, because he carries with him in his battered old sea-chest a map drawn by Captain Flint himself giving the whereabouts of all Flint's buried treasure! Captain Flint!-the most feared pirate ever to roam the high seas.

Well, Flint is dead, but there are plenty of men who served with Captain Flint still alive who feel they have a fair claim to the treasure. The map, though, ends up in the possession of Jim Hawkins -(it's a near thing, read the book to see how that happens).

Jim tells the secret in the local doctor, who quickly join forces to acquire a ship and crew and provisions to sail for Treasure Island.

There's a famous scene where Jim, hiding in the apple barrel on deck, discovers that mutiny(叛乱)is planned. It's a bad moment. The numbers suggest that the pirates are going to have it all their own way. There are nineteen mutineers and seven honest men, including Jim.

And now, you will have to read the book for yourself. This is a fantastic tale of cheat, bravery and cowardice.I don't know how things would have turned out if it hadn't been for Jim Hawkins. For it is Jin who single-handedly steals the Hispaniola from under the very noses of the pirates and sails her round the island to a secret beaching place.

And do you know what happens to Long John Silver, the greatest double-crosser of them all? No? Well, don't expect me to tell you.

Don't be nervous of reading a 'classic'.I know it was published a long time ago, but that doesn't mean it is difficult to read. There is one piece of advice I will give, though.I don't think this book is ever out of print - there are hundreds of different copies around. If you can, choose a copy with large enough print to be able to read comfortably, and exciting illustrations. It makes all the difference.

Go ahead! Read the book.I think you'll love it.

But Xia Yu collected 2,010bottles and built a boat with them, As you read this, Xia is, in fact, on a river somewhere in Anhuai, slowly going towards his destination: the Expo Garden in Shanghai.2,010 plastic bottles was to celebrate Expo (世博会) 2010 Shanghai. On the opening day of the Expo, Xia, together with five friends, went on a 1,500 – km journey from Xiangtan to the Expo Garden, in spite of the doubt whether they’ll make it.After all, the boat they are on can hardly be called a boat.It cost only 2,000 yuan to build in a month.

What’s keeping Xia going is a major cause behind the trip.“We are examining water pollution through our journey and trying to promote a low – carbon (低碳) lifestyle. Before we started, no one believed we could sail the boat to the Dongting Lake. But we made it.” But as they expected, the journey has not always been smooth.Of the six from Xiangtan, four gave up.As of the press time (到发稿时), only Xia and his friend Huang Ying were on the boat.Huang suffered from a disease when they reached Jiujiang, Jiangxi province, Xia said, “There are so many things that can stop up from making it to Shanghai, like the weather, health, and sometimes swift rive water.”

“The boat was produced in a factory according to our design, and perhaps it’s not in a very good condition. But,” Xia said, “we are wearing life jackets”.“Some boats passing by offered help.” What is more of a reward for Xia and Huang is that the Yangtze Rive truned out much cleaner than they had expected.Although Xia and Huang are uncertain about the journedy ahead, they are “quite happy” with what they have already achieved.“After all, it’s not the destination that counts. It’s always the course that matters the most.”

Recently, tests have proved that Beethoven died from lead(铅)poisoning. Bill Walsh directed the Beethoven Research Project. Mr Walsh and his team examined pieces of bone belonging to Beethoven. They found a large amount of lead in the bone pieces. They said the lead levels were equal to those found in pieces of his hair in earlier studies of other scientists.

Genetic tests proved the bone pieces and hair came from Beethoven. The researchers also examined bone fragments(碎片 from someone else who lived during the same period. Both were from the top of the skull. The fragments from Beethoven had more lead than those from the other person. Their study didn’t find measurable levels of cadmium (镉) or mercury (汞), which scientists used to consider were the causes of his health problems.

Beethoven was sick for much of his life. He experienced strong stomach pains, a sign of lead poisoning, and a change of personality when he was around 20. He also got angry easily, and suffered from depression and hearing loss. His health problems became worse as Beethoven grew older.

Walsh said the lead levels found in Beethoven’s skull(颅骨) suggested the metal might have been present in his body for many years. He said although there had been recognized cases of deafness caused by lead poisoning, there was no strong evidence to suggest that lead poisoning was the cause of Beethoven’s deafness.

Ludwig van Beethoven visited many doctors to find a cure for his health problems. In a letter he wrote to a friend, he asked researchers to examine his body after he died so that other people would not have to suffer as he did.

During the research, Walsh and his team didn’t ______.

A. examine the bone pieces of Beethoven

B. examine the bone pieces of another person

C. examine the lead levels of Beethoven’s hair

D. measure the cadmium or mercury in Beethoven’s bones
