Jackson and the Battle in New Orleans

On January 8,1815, American forces under Andrew Jackson defeated the British in the battle of New Orleans (新奥尔良). The victory made Jackson a national hero and helped him to be elected president in 1828 and 1832.

New Orleans was the battle of the war of1812; as a matter of fact, the war had been over for more than two weeks when the battle was fought. U.S. and British officials meeting in Ghent (根特), Belgium, signed a treaty (条约) on Dec24, 1814, but the news didn’t cross the Atlantic until seven weeks later. Had news of the treaty arrived before the British attacked, there would never have been a battle of New Orleans and Jackson might never have been elected president of the United States. There were those, however, who did not think highly of Jackson’s victory. On March 31, 1815, a judge of the United States District Court of the city of New Orleans fined (罚款) Jackson $1,000 for contempt(轻视) because he had declared martial law(宣布军管) during his defense. Twenty - nine years later, on Jan. 8, 1844, the House of Representatives decided to return the money to Jackson with interest at 6%.

    根据短文判断正(T) (F):

1. Andrew Jackson became famous for his victory in the battle of New Orleans.

2. Because they were defeated in the New Orleans, the British signed a treaty with the U. S. and surrendered.

3. The U.S. people admired Jackson so much that he was twice elected president.

4. The war wouldn’t have come to an end if there had not been the battle in New Orleans.

5. The two sides decided to make peace and signed a treaty. But three weeks later, the battle of New Orleans broke out.

A Child Who Could Not See, Hear, Or Speak

For the first nineteen months of her life, Helen Keller was like other pretty happy babies in every way. Then a sudden illness destroyed her sight and hearing. Because she could not hear what other people were saying, the child could not learn to speak. For the next seven years, she lived in a world of darkness, without sounds or words.

The person who changed Helen’s world was her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who entered her life on March 3, 1887. Miss Sullivan had accepted a job a blind child who had never learned to act like a human being, because no one had ever been able to guide her in any way. No one could control Helen. She acted like a young animal, rushing wildly around, throwing things, and hitting anyone whom she could reach. Who could believe that such a child could be taught?

But Anne Sullivan was a very special kind of teacher. She had been blind during part of her own childhood and had learned to read Braille, system of writing that uses raised dots which can be felt by the fingers of a blind person. She had learned to see again after several operations, but she had never forgotten the experience of being blind.

Miss Sullivan understood Helen. She loved her and believed she could teach her. Anne Sullivan could not teach Helen Keller to speak until some other important things had been learned. The little girl had to learn to control her actions and feelings. She had to learn that she could not always do what she wished to do. She had always been able to get what she wanted by using force. The teacher had to change such habits without breaking the child’s spirit.

Miss Sullivan’s battle began. Sometimes, there was real fighting between the wild child and the strong young teacher. At last, however, the battle was won by Miss Sullivan, who had succeeded in showing Helen that she loved her and wanted to help her. The child and her teacher became friends. They continued to be friends until the teacher’s death, fifty year later.

The day on which Helen finally accepted Miss Sullivan as her friend and teacher was a great day in Helen’s life. After that, the teacher could begin to teach the child language.

An elderly woman died and several other passengers were critically injured when a crowded Virgin express train crashed in Cumbria last night.

A huge rescue operation involving RAF helicopters and dozens of ambulances arrive. After passengers were trapped in the train for more than four hours because fallen power line poles made access for emergency workers difficult.

Authorities reported up to 80 injuries. Thirteen people were taken to hospital in a“critical or serious condition.”

Between 180 and 200 passengers were on the 5:15pm Virgin service from London Euston to Glasgow Central when all nine carriages left the rails between Oxenholme and Tebay. Witnesses said that the train shook violently before toppling(倾斜) over into an embankment(筑堤)with at least four carriages overturning. Early this morning, authorities confirmed an elderly woman had died and some other passengers had suffered injuries including back strains, head wounds and broken bones.

Ruth Colton, a passenger on the train, said she was reading a book when the journey became uncomfortable. It seemed that the train was being beaten by heavy winds,“as if we were on a plane”.

The accident brought concerns that Britain's busiest rail route would be crippled(瘫痪)for some time. The line between Preston and Carlisle was postponed as Virgin Trains promised a rapid investigation into the “serious incident”—the company's first big crash.

It is understood that the investigation will examine whether there was an obstacle on the track and the possibility of speeding or mechanical breakdown. The driver, who was injured, will be interviewed and a black-box recorder installed in the train will be examined.

What made the rescue come so late?

    A. It's not accessible to reach the accident spot.

    B. No enough helicopters and ambulances could be found at that time.

    C. It was too far from hospital to Cumbria.

    D. No one called the emergency center.

According to the passage, the busiest rail route in Britain is

    A. From Preston to Carlisle         B. Between Euston and Glasgow

    C. From Oxenholme to Tebay       D. Between Virgin and Pendolino

What does the underlined word “critical”mean?

     A. Important.      B. Careless.     C. Dangerous.      D. Surprising.

Which of the following is the possible cause of the accident?

     A. Careless driving.                 B. Heavy wind.

     C. Over loading.                    D. Obstacle on the track.

We can learn from the passage that Virgin Trains

     A. made no quick reaction to this accident

     B. seldom had so serious an accident before

     C. had made full preparations for the accident

     D. didn't mind how many passengers the train can hold

Rats eat our food or make it so dirty that it isn't fit for people at all. That's why people often kill them by laying down poison. After a day or two, they find the poison still there. The rats haven't touched it, even though it is near the food which they eat. People think they must be clever and cunning. Some scientists have been trying to find the best way to poison rats. They have watched to see just what a rat does day and night. They have found out that rats aren't so clever. They are just very shy.

Rats usually live in holes. They run from these holes to the places where they eat and drink. They have special paths on which they travel each time. So they know their paths quite well.

If anything new, such as stone or wood, is put in the path, the rats won't go near it at first as they are too frightened. It will take them many days to get over the fear. They are also frightened to go near a place that they know, where something has been taken away. If a path goes around a rock, the rats follow the same path around the rock each time. If the rock is taken away, they will still run round the place where the rock was! They won't cross the empty place, which is now open to them, even though it would be quicker.

Rats will always keep away from anything unusual to them. That's why they won't eat poison on the first or second night. They usually won't go anywhere near it for about four days until they get used to being there. Even then they only eat a little at a time.

If people want to kill rats with poison, all they have to do is to leave it out for a few days. Once the rats have got used to it, they will eat it and die.

  1.This passage mainly tells us

    A. how a rat destroys our food

    B. how to poison a rat

    C. what's a rat's habit

    D. poisoning a rat is not easy

2.How does the writer feel about rats?

    A. They are clever and cunning.

    B. They are the most dangerous enemy.

    C. They are smart and shy.

    D. It's easy for them to get close to an unknown object.

3.________ rats have special paths to travel each time.

    A. Because they live in holes most of the time

    B. To find more food to eat and water to drink

    C. In order not to eat anything poisonous

    D. To protect themselves

4.If you want to kill a rat, ________.

    A. you should make it get used to the poison

    B. you should drive it out of the hole

    C. you should place a rock on the path along which it runs

    D. you should make it get over the fear to cross the empty place

A boy and a girl were a couple of lovers. The girl liked feeling rain, so the boy was always holding the umbrella when it rained and most part of the umbrella was over the girl. Rain showered the boy every time but he said nothing except looked at the gift's face, which was full of silent satisfaction. He felt very happy, so did the girl.

One day they went out for a walk. They were walking hand in hand passing a building which was under construction. The girl jumped with excitement and said something. The boy seldom talked only feeling excited as she felt looking at her silently. When the girl was talking, a not big or small stone fell down from the building toward the girl's head! At that moment the boy took the girl in his arms so suddenly and so strongly that the girl let out a scream. He meant to protect the gift with his body. But the boy turned over to make his own body downward before they dropped on the ground. As a result, only the girl's hand was smashed by the stone and fractured.

The girl came back to earth and cried with pain, tears weeping up. She thought the saying that “The husband and the wife are birds in the same forest essentially, but when serious tragedy comes, they will fly separately” was really not wrong! With this, she straggled and stood up from. the boy's body keeping from the pains and slowly ran away without glancing at the boy.

At the time, the boy was calling the girl's name in a weak voice, his lips were already white. He took out his mobile phone and dialed the girl's number, but the girl didn't answer. He dialed again she didn't answer again. For several times, he gave up. But his fingers pressed something on the mobile. At that time, beside the boy, the blood spread slowly, his hand hung and the mobile phone lay in the blood, he had no strength to press the “SENT” key yet.

The next day, when the girl heard of the news that the boy was being rescued, she ran to the hospital without considering her anger. When she hurried to the hospital, the doctor had already declared his death; the cause of his death was that his lung had lost too much blood.

It was because, when the boy meant to protect the girl with his body he found that there was a steel stick under them, so he turned over to make it inset(=put into) his own body.

The boy's mother passed the boy's mobile phone on to the gift.

The girl read the message that hadn't been sent: “Honey, I'm sorry, I still couldn't protect you and made you wound... “Upon this, the girl couldn't help crying...

Please treasure the one you love and believe his or her LOVE!
