题目列表(包括答案和解析)

It's not much, but it's home. Francis Chan, an engineer, lives in Hampstead, north London, in a flat that's just 4ft wide by 21ft long. He loves it.

Tiny though it is, it has got all the comforts. Peter Baynes, Chan’s architect (建筑师),has achieved a clever piece of design, according to architectural experts.

The Chan mini-house was built on what was once a path down the side of a big Victarian house. Not an inch of space is wasted.

When you step in through the front door, you're standing in the shower, on Britain' s only self-cleansing doormat (自动清洁门垫). A door opens on to an equally tiny toilet with washbasin. Two steps further in comes the kitchen, complete with full-sized cooker and fridge, and washer/ drier. A worktop folds down from the wall.

Another step and you're into the dining/ office area. Four people can sit here for dinner, says Chan as he sets the table-top into place. He even has a fold-down drawing-board for when he's working at home. The bed is hidden under a cover board right at the back. "I don't even have to make the bed," Chan says." I just put the cover down. "

Chan's business suits hang neatly on the wall over the bed. Daylight comes in through the skylight. The house feels like a very small boat and Chan admits he toyed with the idea of naming it the "boat-house".

"It cost around £4,700 to build last year. Now it's been valued at £30,000. It proves that good design doesn't need to cost more. It just needs a lot of care." says Chan.

2.Where is Chan's flat?

DID you get a flu shot this year? For the first time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US is recommending that all children aged from 6 months to 18 years receive the flu vaccine.

Vaccines battle diseases caused by bacteria and viruses.A weakened form of the germ (微生物) is introduced into the body. The body makes special substances called antibodies to fight the germs. If the actual germs were to attack, the antibodies would fight it.

Because there are many kinds of flu viruses, scientists must create a new vaccine  formula (方程式) each year.Researchers must make a prediction.

It is like forecasting the weather.Sometimes they are right on, and sometimes they are off.But even when the vaccine does not closely match circulating flu types, it can make the illness less serious.

"The flu vaccine is not as effective as the polio (小儿麻痹症) vaccine or the measles vaccine," says Dr William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine."It's not a great vaccine, but it is quite a good vaccine."

But a flu vaccine doesn't work for everyone. There are certain people who should be careful about taking it.

Because the vaccine is produced in eggs, those who are allergic (过敏的) to eggs should not take it.If you have a fever, you should wait until you recover.

Some people are afraid that they might get the flu from the flu shot.Scientists say that it is not possible, because the viruses in the flu shot are inactivated. But some minor side effects such as low-grade fever and body ache could occur. If they do, they begin soon after the shot and usually last only one to two days.

CARDIFF, Wales-Poets, singers and musicians from across the globe gathered in Wales to celebrate the tradition(传统) of storytelling.

"It might seem strange that people still want to listen in age of watching television, but this is an unusual art form whose time has come again," said David Ambrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival in Wales.

"Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands of years old. So our story-tellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time," he said early this month.

Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound.

Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively.

Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving (使复兴) storytelling in Wales.

"It came out of a group of people who wanted to reconnect with traditions and as all the Welsh are story-tellers, it is in good hands here," Ambrose said.
