Apple’s newest product, the iPad Mini, is a downsized brother of the 100-million selling iPad product line. I think if Steve Jobs were still around, this product wouldn’t exist (存在). He was strongly against a device (装置) this size. The technical details of the device may shake Apple’s fans, and leave Android fans pleased. Here are four reasons you should not buy this new piece of Apple hardware.

The Resolution (分辨率)

The iPad Mini is a thin, beautiful piece. Visit the official iPad Mini product page, and you’ll see it said to be “Every Inch An iPad.” Unfortunately the 7.9″ screen’s 1024 x 768 resolution is the same as the iPad 2 — a device now two generations (代) old. I find it funny that Apple is pushing their Retina technology, while at the same time producing an iPad Mini with a lower resolution. Newcomers to the iPad will not be impressed, and existing iPad owners probably will not choose to buy the iPad Mini as a second device.

The Price

Apple asks for $329 for an iPad Mini. However, Google’s Nexus 7 is priced at $249, and the search giant includes a $25 voucher (优惠券). It used to be enough for Apple to pull back the curtain on a new product to cause praise, but now the fierce competition has led to dirty marketing.

The Short Life Cycle

Apple has now proved they have no problem introducing a new revision (修订) of their products every six months. With the 4th generation iPad available (可以得到的) soon, it’s nothing less than a slap in the face to Apple fans. We should expect a similar treatment of the iPad Mini. By summer 2013, expect Apple to roll out an iPad Mini 2.

The A 5 Chip (芯片)

This is the same chip powering the iPad 2 — a device now two generations old — and the iPod Touch. Apple is a brilliant technology company. Some may call them a lifestyle company. The iPad is worth every bit of praise and success it has gained so far. But this time, Apple didn’t come up with a new and clever product.

53.What would happen if Steve Jobs were still alive?

A. Apple wouldn’t produce the iPad Mini.

B. He would make the iPad Mini more popular.

C. Android fans would be happy for the new product.

D. The technical details of the iPad Mini would be better.

54.Which of the follwing is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The resolution of the iPad Mini is high enough.

B. Using too many electronic devices is bad for health.

C. Google has similar products with a higher price.

D. The newest iPad Mini will go out of date very soon.

55. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The failure of Apple.

B. An introduction of an iPad Mini.

C. Reasons one shouldn’t buy an iPad Mini.

D. The advantages and disadvantages of an iPad Mini.

56.What can you infer about the author’s attitude?

A. The author admires Steve Jobs very much.

B. The author isn’t much of a fan of the iPad Mini.

C. The author thinks Apple isn’t as good as Google.

D. The author considers all Apple products useless.

You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight.

When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open.

Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380 000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second.

51. You can see the book because_______.

A. your eyes are close to it B. it reflects some of the sunlight

C. it has light of its own D. your eyesight can get to it

52. The underlined word “luminous” means_______.

A. visible B. all colors C. giving off light D. sunlight

53. Light traces about _________ kilometers per second.

A. 380 000 B. 300 000 C. 400 000 D. 190 000

54. Which of the following is true?

A. The moment you open your eyes the light from the book travels to your eyes.

B. Light from the book is much shorter than that from the moon.

C. All the things you can see give off light.

D. Light travels so fast that there is no time for you to read.

55. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. You can see and read a book because you open your eyes.

B. Some objects are luminous, some not.

C. You can see things because of light.

D. Light travels very fast so you cannot notice it.

It comes without warning. It destroys people’s bodies. It kills almost 5,000 people around the world every day. This is AIDS – one of the most dangerous human diseases on the Earth.

December 1 is World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero: zero new HIV infections (传染), zero discrimination (歧视) and zero AIDS – related deaths”.

AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (获得性免疫缺陷综合症). It is caused by HIV – a virus (病毒). HIV travels in people’s blood and affects T cells (细胞), a type of cell that helps the body fight diseases. It may take years for the virus to harm enough T cells for the infected person to get sick and develop AIDS.

HIV and AIDS spreads through blood-to-blood contact, sharing needles or having blood transfusions. A mother with HIV can give the virus to her unborn baby. Unsafe sex can also spread AIDS.

Right now there is no cure (治疗) for HIV or AIDS. However, new treatments can help people with the virus live longer. The “AIDS Cocktail (鸡尾酒疗法)”, uses several drugs mixed together like a cocktail. It can help people with HIV to live longer.

On World AIDS Day, people wear red ribbons to show they care about HIV and AIDS. American artists thought up the red ribbons in 1991. They chose red because it is bold and visible – symbolizing (象征) passion, a heart and love.

How much do you know about AIDS?

Q: Can you get AIDS from shaking hands with someone who has AIDS?

A: No. The HIV virus cannot live outside the human body. So social contact such as hugging (拥抱) or kissing an AIDS patient cannot give you AIDS, either.

Q: Can you get AIDS if mosquitoes (蚊子) bite (叮咬) you?

A: No. Mosquitoes do take blood from people but they do not exchange blood between people.

Q: If a dog bites someone with AIDS, and then bites you, can you catch AIDS?

A: No. AIDS only affects humans. Animals cannot catch this illness from people, and people cannot catch it from animals.
