    I'm one of those people who are terrible at saying no．I spend too much of my time doing things I'd rather not be．I get things done, but it's not always the best I can do, or the best way I can spend my time．That's why my newest goal, both as a professional and a person, is to be a quitter．

    Being a quitter isn't being someone who gives up, who doesn't see important things through to the end．I want to quit doing things that I'm asked to do, for no other reason than I'm asked to do it．1 want to be able to quit something in mid-stream, because I realize there's nothing good coming from it．

    A friend of mine once told me that "I knew I was an adult when I could stop reading a book, even after getting 500 pages into it．" Strange though it sounds, we all intend to do this．We get involved in something, realize we don't want to be a part of it, but just keep doing it．

    What I advise is to quit as often as possible．If you're stuck doing something, and don't really want to do it anymore, step back for a second．Ask if you really have to do this, and what value is being produced from your doing it．Don't think about the time you've put into it or how much it's taken over your life．If you don't want to do it, and don't have to do it, don't do it．

    By quitting these things, you'll free up time to do things that actually do create value, for yourself and for others．You'll be able to begin to put your time and effort into the things you'd actually like to do．

    Let's learn how to say "no" at the beginning, or in the middle．Let's see to it that we're spending our time creating value, rather than worsening our losses．Let's be quitters together．

    　　I am terrible oh TV．I don't sit straight and I don't talk clearly．It bothers, because I know inside I am smart, sensitive and sincere．Television can make any fool look like an intellectual, but I come over as dishonest．After a disastrous TV show last year, when I called the interviewer by the wrong name, I was reluctant to do broadcasting again．

    　　Now, I will have my first novel out next month, which is called Do It Again, and the advertising people tell me I must go on TV to promote it．That is why I find myself practising my television interviewing technique with two consultants from Public Image Ltd．

    　　“He blinks(眨眼)a lot, doesn't he?” says Diana, the speech specialist, studying my image on a video monitor．“And his crossed legs look defensive．But the voice isn't bad．” Jeannie, who is introduced to me as Public Image's image consultant, takes a step backwards to study the general posture．“Needs to get his bottom back in the sofa．And the jacket makes him look a bit deformed．Where does he get his clothes from?”

    　　“Honesty is the most important thing,” Says Diana．“We don't want to turn people into actors．We want to bring out their personality．Then most importantly, there are the three E's：Energy, Enthusiasm and Enjoyment．And do try to stop blinking．”

    　　And so our practice interview begins．“So, what can you tell us about your book, Martyn?” “Umm…” A long pause．“Errr…” A longer pause．“Tee hee, hargh…” A foolish giggle．“All right,” says Diana patiently, “We'll try that again．” We try it again, many, many times, each time trying to solve a different problem that I have．On the second run-through, my crossed legs keep moving up and down, which makes me look as if I want to run away(I do, I do)．On the third run they are uncrossed, but my hands are clenched on my lap．On the fourth my hands are fiddling with my ears．

    　　But Diana is patient and gives me a lot of advice．She is very good at her job because on the final run-through, after three hours or so, I really don't look too bad．Steady gaze, breathing clear and no blinking．Not perfect but not bad．

    　　I'm bursting with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment and I'm talking a lot of nonsense, but you'd hardly notice．When you watch people on TV, you'll see a lot more just like me．

    It was Sunday morning. All the summer world was bright and fresh, and full of life. There was cheer on every face and a spring in every step.

    Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He stopped by the fence in front of the house where he lived with his aunt Polly. He looked at it, and all joy left him. The fence was long and high. He put the brush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated the operation. He felt he could not continue and sat down.

    He knew that his friends would arrive soon with all kinds of interesting plans for the day. They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his having to work on a beautiful summer Saturday. The thought burned him like fire.

    He put his hand into his pockets and took out all that he owned. Perhaps he could find some way to pay someone to do the whitewashing for him. But there was nothing of value in his pockets—nothing that could buy even half an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back into his pockets and gave up the idea.

    At this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderful idea came to him. It filled his mind with a great, bright light. Calmly he picked up the brush and started again to whitewash.

    While Tom was working, Ben Rogers appeared. Ben was eating an apple as he walked along the street. As he walked along, he was making noises like the sound of a riverboat. First he shouted loudly, like a boat captain. Then he said “Ding-Dong-Dong”, “Ding-Dong-Dong” again and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to Tom, he stopped.

    Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look at Ben. Ben stared a moment and then said: "Hello! I’m going swimming, but you can’t go, can you?”

    No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom's mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.

    Ben said, "Hello, old fellow, you’ve got to work, hey?"

    Tom turned suddenly and said, "Why, it's you, Ben! I wasn't noticing."

    "Say — I'm going swimming. Don't you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work — wouldn't you? Of course you would."

    Tom looked at the boy a bit, and said "What do you call work?"

    "Why, isn't that work?"

    Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answered casually,

    "Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. All I know is, it suits Tom Sawyer."

    "Oh come, now, you don't mean to say that you like it?"

    The brush continued to move.

    "Like it? Well, I don't see why I shouldn’t like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?" Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom moved his brush back and forth, stepped back to look at the result, added a touch here and there, and stepped back again. Ben watched every move and got more and more interested. Soon he said,

    "Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little."

    Tom thought for a moment, was about to agree; but he changed his mind:

    "No — no — it won’t do, Ben. You see, Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. It has got to be done very carefully. I don’t think there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it well enough."

    "No — is that so? Oh come, now —let me just try. Only just a little."

    "Ben, I'd like to, but if it isn’t done right, I’m afraid Aunt Polly— "

    "Oh, I'll be careful. Now let me try. Say -- I'll give you the core（核心）of my apple."

    "Well, here — No, Ben, now don't. I'm afraid —"

    Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness on his face, but joy in his heart. By the time Ben was tired, Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite; and when Billy was tired, Johnny bought in for a dead rat — and so on, hour after hour.     And he had not worked. He had had a nice idle time all the time, with plenty of company -- and the fence had been whitewashed three times. If he hadn't run out of whitewash, Tom would have owned everything belonging to his friends.
