“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted Father. With tears welling(涌出) up in my eyes, I rushed out of the house and ran along the street.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me.I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space:happy and harmonious.

But now I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old.We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the street, without a destination in my mind.My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high -rise apartment block in which I lived,I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself,“Is father waiting for me.or is he still angry with me?”

In fact,it was nothing.Perhaps,Dad was throwing some of his old stamps.Perhaps he thought they were useless.I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.

All the lights were off except father’s.

Dad was always 1ike this.Maybe he didn’t know bow to express himself. After shouting at me,he never showed any mercy or regret After an argument he will creep(蹑手蹑脚)up in my sleep and then tuck me underneath the covers

This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. With the key in hand,I was as nervous as I had ever been.At last,I decided to open the door.As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks.I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love-it is second to none.

When we speak of a basic human need we mean something which is necessary to life, something we cannot possibly do without. Food is a basic human need. Without it we would starve to death;but even if we have plenty of food, but of the wrong kind, our bodies will suffer from a lack of the right food. This is known as malnutrition.

In primitive countries, people want only the foods which can be grown near their homes, whereas we eat foods which are often grown many thousands of miles away from our homes.Just think of the different types of meat we cat, beef mutton, pork, chicken, turkey, goose, and rabbit. We could manage on a diet of one kind of meat, but how monotonous it would become! Even turkey, which most of us eat only at Christmas, would become monotonous(单调的)if we ate it every day.

Yet we cannot live on meat alone, and need other foods like bread and fruit to provide us with other essential nutrients which we need to keep our bodies healthy.

We can agree with primitive man that food is a basic need, but we differ:from him in our food wants because of.the wide variety of food we have available compared with him;we have a wider choice.Take fruit, for example, not only can we enjoy the fruits grown in this country, but because of modem methods of transport and food preservation,we can also enjoy the more exotic fruits from countries thousands of miles away, whereas primitive man,is limited in his choice to the kinds of fruit which actually grow where he lives.

However they differ in satisfying their hunger primitive and civilized men both experience the basic need for food.

The same is true of the second of our human needs.Clothing is necessary to regulate the heat of our bodies.Since we live:in a temperate climate we need more clothes than people living in tropic conditions.Likewise, our clothing needs to change with seasons.

Shelter, the third of our needs, depends upon the climate, the skill of the builder, one’s social position, and the materials available. The simple shelter of the aboriginal would not do for US,and yet it satisfies his needs. The three bed roomed suburban house of the average family would not be grand enough for a rich family, and yet the modern house contains many of the material comforts which were denied to the kings and queens of old times.

A.they eat only the foods which can be grown near their homes

B.they eat more food than primitive people did

C.they eat a great variety of food

D.they can afford to eat turkey every day

53.The sentence “The same is true of the second of our human needs” means

A.the first and the second needs are exactly alike

B.1ike the first need, the second need is also true

C.what is said of the first need can also be said of the second

D.the first need is as significant to human as the second need

54.Which of the following statements is TRUE of the kings and queens of the old times?

A.They did not admit having material、comforts.

In science the meaning of the word“explain”suffers with civilization’s every step in search of reality.Science can not really explain electricity, magnetism, graviton their effects can be measured and predicted, but of their nature no more known to the modern scientists than to Thalas who first looked into the nature of the electrification when physicists reject the notion that man can never discover what these mysterious forces“really”are.Electricity,Bertrand Russell says,is not a thing,1ike St.Paul’s Cathedrfll;it is a way in which things behave. When we have told how things behave when they are electrified, and under what circumstances are electrified,we have to1d all there is to tell. Until recently scientists would have disapproved of such an idea.Aristotle, for example, whose natural science dominated Western thought for two thousand years, believed that man could arrive at an understanding of reality by reasoning from self-evident principles. He felt, for example, that it is a self--evident principle that everything in the universe has its proper place, hence one can deduce that objects fall to the ground because that’s where they belong, and smoke goes up because that’s where it belongs. The goal of Aristotle science was to explain why things happen.Modern science was born when Galileo began trying to explain how things happen and thus originated the method of controlled experiment, which now forms the basis of scientific investigation.

A.that there are mysterious forces in the universe

B.that man can’t discover what forces ”really” are

5.Modern science came into being_________.

A.when the method of controlled experiment was first introduced
