    　　Bright comets(彗星) are a rare(罕见的)and beautiful sight. Though we think of them as members of the sun’s family, many comets go far beyond the orbits of the planets. As a rule they return once in a while to travel around the sun

    　　A comet seems to be composed of gas, dust and ice. There is a great deal of solid, frozen material. As the mass gets near the sun, the outer frozen parts begin to melt(融化), and more gases form. The pressure of the sun’s radiation(放射) drives the dust and gases outwards in a long, streaming“tail”, perhaps several tails. For this reason the tail always points away from the sun. And when the comet moves farther from the radiation, the tail gets smaller and at last disappears.

    　　We owe (把……归于)our knowledge chiefly to Sir Edmond Harley(1656－1742). He saw a very beautiful one in 1682, and it led him to study comets and their orbits.

    　　Then he said,“The comet of 1682 was the same one that appeared in 1531 and again in 1607. It will return in 1758 or 1759.”

    　　Harley died in 1742, but people waited and watched…And sure enough, Harley’s Comet arrived, big and bright, early in 1759. The comet was named:“Comet Harley”and it comes about every 75 years.

    　　Last time it returned in 1986 and was watched by hundreds of millions of people. If you were one of them, I hope you will be lucky enough to watch it again next time it appears.

    　　Most people have sometimes though："I should like to fly like a bird．" Many people have tried!We do not know about all the people who have tried to fly but we know about some of them．

    　　In about 1020, for example, an Englishman, Oliver, tried to fly with wings like a bird's．He covered more than two hundred meters before he fell to the ground and broke both his arms and legs．But Oliver seemed quite pleased．He said he had made one little mistake．He had forgotten to wear a tail like a bird's．After that he never tried again．

    　　In 1507,an Italian, named John Damain, tried to fly in Scotland．He wore a pair of wings made from hens' feathers, and jumped from the walls．He fell like a stone to the ground below and broke a leg．

    　　Damain was very disappointed．He said, "I made a mistake．I used hens' feathers and hens do not often fly．I ought to have used the feathers of a bird that flies．Then I am sure I would have flown．" But when he was well again, Damain, like Oliver, never tried once again．

    　　An Italian scientist, John Borelli, spent much time thinking about flying．Finally, in 1680, he wrote a book having a great many calculations．They proved that men would never be able to fly with wings strapped to their arms．Borelli worked out that a man's arms were not strong enough to support him in the air．

    　　We know now that he was right but some people took no notice of what Borelli said．In 1742, a Frenchman, although he was an old man, tried to fly across the River Seine, in Paris, with wings strapped to his arms．He jumped from a house beside the river and fell down on to a boat below．He was fortunate and only broke a leg．

    　　Today men can do much better, though they still cannot fly like birds．They use very light, strong wings called "hang-gliders"．One man landed safely after jumping from a balloon at 32,700 feet!Another stayed in the air for 19 hours 36 minutes!They still sometimes hurt themselves．

    　　Thermometers are very useful tools．We use them to measure our temperature when we are sick, We use them to measure the temperature of the air．We also put them into the roast to see if it has finished cooking．Knowing how to read a thermometer can be very helpful．

    　　A thermometer is made of a hollow tube with a bulb at the end filled with mercury．When the mercury gets hot it expands and moves up the tube; when the mercury mols down it contracts and moves down the tube．

    　　In 1714 a famous German scientist named Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit marked where the mercury was in the tube when the thermometer was in a mixture of salt and snow．He called this point 0 degrees(0°)．Then he marked the mercury height when the thermometer was in a man’s mouth．He then drew equally spaced marks between the two points．On this scale the temperature of ice that is about to melt is 32℉, and the temperature of water that has just begun to boil is 212℉．The F sthnds for Fahrenheit．

    　　In 1742 a Swedish scientist, Celsius, made a different scale．He marked 0°as the freezing point of water and 100°as the boiling point, with 100 points between the two．This is the Centigrade scale, which we write as 42℃, for example．We use the Fahrenheit scale for weather, cooking and medicine; but in science we always use the Centigrade scale．
