On November 15, 1904, patent(专利)#775, 134 was granted to KingC.Gillette for a safety“razor”.King Camp Gillette was born in Fond du loc, Wisconsin in 1885.To support himself when the family's home was destroyed in the Chicago Fire of 1871, Gillette became a traveling salesman. This work led him to William Painter, the inventor of the disposable(一次性的)Crown Cork bottle cap, who assured Gillette that a successful invention was one that was purchased over and over again by satisfied customer.

In 1895, after several years of considering and rejecting possible inventions, Gillette suddenly had a brilliant idea while shaving one morning. It was an entirely new razor(剃刀)and blade(刀片)that flashed in his mind-a razor with a safe, inexpensive, and disposable blade.

It took six years for Gillette's idea to evolve.During that time, technical experts told Gillette that it would be impossible to produce steel that was hard, thin, and inexpensive enough for commercial development of the disposable razor blade. Then in 1901.MIT graduate William Nickerson agreed to try.

By 1903, he had succeeded.Production of the Gillette R safety razor and blade began as the Gillette Safety Razor Company started operations in South Boston Sales grew steadily.During World War I, the U.S.Government issued Gillette safety razors to the entire armed forces.By the end of the war, some 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades were put into military hands, thereby converting an entire nation to the Gillette safety razor.

This week is National Volunteer Week, a time for the Canadian Red Cross to recognize our dedicated (有奉献精神的) volunteers who devote their time and talents from coast to coast. Over the course of the week we will use this blog to share stories about our volunteers and the amazing work they do --- a small part of the outstanding individuals across the country.
Take Saskatchewan for example. Last year that province was hit by wide-spread flooding, a hurricane and forest fires. Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers went to work right away and helped more than 2,100 adults and 775 children recover the basic necessities of life.
It’s important to share stories from volunteers to truly appreciate what they do. Christine Hoffman is a Disaster Response Volunteer in Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan. She’s a veteran Red Crosser for about 16 years. Still nothing could have prepared her for the call she took in the Recovery Center last year in response to flooding in Maple Greek. This story is best told in her own words. This is what she said:
“I will never forget the first phone call I took in the Recovery Centre. A young man called asking what services Red Cross was offering in town. As we were talking, he told me he had a rope in his backyard but he thought he would be using it for other reasons. My heart stopped. I told him to come to see us so we could work together on a plan to improve his situation. He came in a little while later. Nearly two hours later he left standing straight up with tear- filled eyes. He thanked me for convincing him to come in. His home had been destroyed, but together we put together a plan and he was eventually able to move back into his own home.”
During National Volunteer Week 2011, let’s thank Christine, and the many other volunteers like her. Thanks for making us proud!

Although Wu Huifei was only a concubine (妃子) of Tang Xuanzong (AD 685-762), the sixth
emperor of the Tang Dynasty, her influence was far greater than most in her position.
Historians say that the ruler loved her so much that, in AD 724, he banished his wife and made
Wu a royal concubine.
"Although she was only a concubine, she was treated as an empress with palace etiquette (礼节),"
explained Shi Xiaoqun, director of relics collection for Shaanxi History Museum. "Tang Xuanzong even
wanted to make her his empress but was opposed by the ministers."
The emperor had thousands of concubines in his palace in Chang'an (now called Xi'an, capital of
Shaanxi province) but, according to Shi, he only loved Wu, the mother of seven of his children.
Wu died in the December of AD 737 at the age of 38 and was buried in Jingling Mausoleum. She
was given the title Empress Zhenshun after her death.
"It's rare for a concubine to be given so much posthumous (死后获得的) honor in the history of
Chinese feudal (封建) society," said Liu Daiyun, research director at the Shaanxi Archaeological
Research Institute.
Her tomb -53 meters wide by 56 meters long - is located in the west of Pangliu village, which is
part of Xi'an's Chang'an district.
The recovered sarcophagus (石棺) is 4 meters long, 2 meters wide and 2 meters tall and is
decorated with flowers and maiden figures, which archaeologists say is a rare cultural relic of high
scientific, historical and artistic value. In ancient times, a sarcophagus was used to house wood coffins
in order to preserve the body of the noble person.
"I knew it was precious but I didn't know it was so beautiful," said Han Qinglong, who headed the
team that brought the relic back to China four years after it was stolen and sold abroad by tomb raiders (盗墓者).
