There are amazing things in the world. The story about Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster（尼斯湖水怪）, is one of the widely spread legends(传说) in the early 20th century.

On July 22, 1933, two visitors, Mr. and Mrs. George Spices, were driving along one of the most famous lakes in the highlands of Scotland. Suddenly they saw an animal on the road in front of them. Unlike any other animals that they had seen before, it had a very big body and a very small head, but no legs. When Mr. and Mrs. Spices saw it, it was moving towards the lake like a snake. Later on, the animal was described like a long black or green dinosaur, and it was informally called Nessie.

       On the page headed May l7，2517，Margie wrote in her diary，“Today Tommy found a real book!”

       It was a very old book covered with dust．Margie’s grandfather once said that long ago all stories were printed on paper

    “School”

    “School? What’s there to write about school? I hate school．”

     Margie hated school now more than ever．The electric teacher had bee giving her drill after drill in geography and she had been doing worse and worse until her mother had finally sent for someone to fix the teacher

    The man came with a whole box of tools．He turned off the elecuicity，and started to repair the teacher．There was a momtor that showed questions，and a hole where Margie had to put compositions and test papers．The electric teacher marked the paper quickly．

    Margie asked Tommy，“Why would anyone write about school?”

    “Because it’s the school they bad hundreds of years ago”

       Margie read the book for a while，then said，“Anyway，they had a teacher？”

       “Yes，but it was a man”

    “A man? How could a man be a teacher?”

    “Well，he just told the kids things and gave them homework”

    “A man isn’t smart enough．”

    “Sure he is．My father knows as much as my teacher’’

    “But I wouldn’t want a strange in my house to teach me．”Margie argued

    Tommy laughed．“The teacher didn’t live in the house．They had a special building and all the kids went there”

    “And all the kids learnt the same thing?”

    “Sure，if they were the same age”

        They weren’t even half-finished when Margle’s mother called．“Margfa! School!”

    Margie went into the school next to her bedroom，and the electric teacher was waiting far her them．It was the same way every day except Saturday and Sunday

    The monitor lit up，and it said，“Please put yesterday’s homework in the proper hole”

    Margie sighed and threw a dirty sock at the machine．She was thinking about the old days．All the kids from the whole neighborhood came to the school，Iaughing and shouting in the yard．They could even help one another with the homework

Playing is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.

Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight. 

When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions. 

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be. 

Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving. 

Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

　　In most American cities, the rent for a one-bedroom apartment was $ 250 or more per month in recent years． In some smaller cities such as Louisville, Kentucky or Jacksonville, Florida the rent was less, but in larger cities it was more． For example, if you lived in Los Angeles, you had to pay $400 or more to rent a one-bedroom apartment, and the same apartment rented for $ 626 and up in Chicago． The most expensive rents in the US were in New York City, where you had to pay at least $ 700 a month to rent a one-bedroom apartment in most parts of the city．

　　Renters and city planners are worried about the high cost of renting apartments． Many cities now have rent-control laws to keep the cost of renting now． These laws help low-income families who cannot pay high rents．

　　Rent control in the United States began in 1943 when the government imposed (课税) rent controls on all American cities to help workers and the families of soldiers during World War II． After the war, only one city－-New York－-continued these World War II controls． Recently, more and more cities have returned to rent controls． At the beginning of the 1980s, nearly one fifth of the people in the United States lived in cities with rent-control laws．

　　Many cities have rent-control laws, but why are rents so high? Builders and landlords blame rent controls for the high rents． Rents are high because there are not enough apartments to rent and they blame rent control for the shortage of apartments． Builders want more money to build more apartment buildings, and landlords want more money to repair their old apartment buildings． But they cannot increase rents to get this money because of the rent control laws． As a result, landlords are not repairing their old apartments and builders are not building new apartment buildings to replace the ole apartment buildings． Builders are building apartments for high-income families, not low-income families, so low-income families must live in old apartments that are in disrepair． Builders and landlords claim that rent-control laws really hurt low-income families．

　　Many renters disagree with them． They say that rent control is not the problems． Even without rent controls, builders and landlords will continue to ignore low-income housing because they can make more money from high-income housing． The only answer, they claim, is more rent control and government help for low-income housing．
