Driving in a foreign country is always different in at least some ways from driving in your own country. Here are some general points regarding driving in New Zealand.
●       Visitors wishing to drive in New Zealand do not require an international driver's licenses but    are required to carry their local driver's license whenever driving.
●       Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road as they do in Britain, Australia, and Japan.         Most rental vehicles will have a sticker reminding you of this important fact.
●       When the traffic light is red, you must stop. There is no left turn rule as in North America.
●       New Zealand road rules follow international standards but please note that in New Zealand    vehicles turning left must give way to traffic turning right.
●       In general, if you are turning left (where there are give-way signs or no signs), give way to        vehicles that not turning. In all other situations, give way to vehicles crossing or coming from    your right.
●       Scat belts must be worn at all times while driving in New Zealand. This stands for the driver and      passengers. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers are wearing their seatbelts.
●       Do not drink alcohol before driving in New Zealand-drinking and driving laws are strictly         enforced.
●       Speed limits are in kilometers per hour (kph), not miles per hour (mph).
Speed conversion: 1 kph equals 0.621mph; 1 mph equals 1.61 kph.
●       The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h. In towns and cities the speed limit is 50km/h.     Be sure to obey all school crossing speed reductions as speed cameras operate regularly throughout New Zealand.

A severe heatwave sweeping India, with temperatures of almost 44ºC, the highest in 52 years, has killed at least 80 people this month, officials said on Sunday. The hot weather, which officials say would continue over northern, north-western and central India in the next 48 hours, also may have some impact on wheat production, exporters and flour-mill associations said.
New Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 43.7ºC on Saturday, indicating a hot summer in the next two months in the nation's capital and other parts of northern and eastern India. The highest temperature in the past 24 hours was 47ºC at Ganganagar city, in Rajasthan state. Summer temperatures have been 4ºC-6ºC above normal over most parts of northern and central India since March, weather officials said.
In the eastern state of Orissa, authorities have decided to shut down schools from next Tuesday, advancing the annual summer holiday. Authorities said they were investigating reports of 53 deaths from various parts of the state.
"District collectors have been asked to investigate and submit reports on other deaths," Bhimsen Gochhayat, a government official said. Other deaths were reported from northern state of Uttar Pradesh and central Madhya Pradesh states.
India is expected to produce about 82 million tons of wheat in 2009-2010, but there could be a shortage of 1-1.5 million tons due to the heatwave, said Veena Sharma, Secretary General of the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India. "Most of the harvesting is over, but there definitely will be a slight shortage of 1-1.5 million tons due to the extreme weather conditions," she told Reuters.
India is relying on an abundant wheat crop to make up for a 14.2% drop in rice output, the major summer-sown food grain, marred by the worst monsoon (季风)in 37 years last year. Weather officials say with summer temperatures in India set to remain above average, there were hopes of heavy rains at the start of the monsoon season that will help early sowing of rice, soybeans and lentils.

Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers.Building the base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth.
We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects: general size, presence of water, length of day, range of temperatures. These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries-long project: to terraform Mars.Terraforming means altering a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists.
Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple: add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere; pump water to the surface; and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years.
Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 6 billion people, and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: altering the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate.Currently terraforming Earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and preserve some natural living places.
Small as the possibility of such a project is, it is not impossible.Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from the earth.
The future existence of all the people in our world may very well depend upon our ability to terraform Mars.
【小题1】What would be the best title for this passage?

A.Terraforming Mars.B.Saving the Earth.
C.Travelling to Mars.D.A Newly-found Place.
【小题2】What does the underlined word “altering” mean in the second paragraph?
A.Warming.B.Changing.C.Planting.D.Building.
【小题3】According to the passage the main purpose of terraforming Mars is to _____.
A.do some scientific research work
B.find out its similarity to Earth
C.avoid the dying away of many other species
D.find on Mars living place for the increasing human beings
【小题4】The main reason for causing many people to consider terraforming Mars is that _____.
A.there are some resemblances between Earth and Mars
B.terraforming Mars is theoretically simple
C.we have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: Earth
D.the development of science and technology is very rapid
