A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolutions: we stopped talking to one another.

I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and…I became invisible, absent from the conversation.

The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another, With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation index goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person my more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.

I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card a voice mail system, and an email account. Giving them up isn't wise…they're a great help to use. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.

More and more .I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn't really have time to talk, The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier…or at least facilitating my antisocial instincts.

So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging. with people who live near me,no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.

Even if you really enjoy your job, it’s still possible to battle boredom as you work. You may not be able to make big changes—or change your job—but you can make small adjustments to your routine that can make every day seem, well, a little less routine.

1. Switch Your Seat

Change your outlook at the office by changing your office. Ask your supervisor to help you find a new desk. Even switching desks with a neighboring coworker can offer a fresh atmosphere.

If it's not possible to change your location, see if you can change your desk’s direction. A new view can be just as refreshing as a new location.

2. ______________

Start and end your day in a different way. Consider a new mode of transportation, if it’s possible. Take a subway. Ride a bike on sunny days. Carpool with a coworker. Use a new route to get to your job. You needn't change it for ever—just long enough to help you escape the boredom.

3. Find a New Work Style

Sick of attending that long-standing Monday morning meeting? Try to change it to the afternoon.

If you find yourself feeling most bored in the afternoons, try to arrange to do your favorite tasks then and tackle less desirable projects in the mornings.

If you usually communicate with coworkers via email and instant messaging, start dealing with people face to face. Increased communication with coworkers may help improve your mood.

4. Get and Set a Goal

If your work is short of objectives, it's no wonder that work has become boring. Identify a goal and set an “achieve by” date for it.

Your goal needn’t be noble as long as you have enough enthusiasm for it. Perhaps you want to make a new project. Maybe you’d like to pursue a promotion. Or you may even set a goal of finding a new job altogether. Whatever it is, actively move toward an objective.

1.What is the purpose of the passage? (within 15 words)

2.Which sentence in the text is the closest in meaning to the following one?

4. List three methods of escaping from boredom in your daily. (within 5 words for each)

Now in his senior year in Bowdoin College, a small, elite liberal-arts(文科)college in Masine, Chen Yongfang has become such a devotee of the liberal-arts approach that he’s made it his mission to spread the word throughout China. He has coauthored a book called A True Liberal Arts Education, which essentially explains the little-known concept to Chinese students and their parents. Though there have been many books about how to get into Ivy League universities, “there was not a single book in China about the smaller liberal-arts colleges,” he says.

The book, which Chen wrote with friends Ye Lin and Wan Li, who also attend small U. S. colleges, touts(兜售)such benefits as intimate classes (the student-to-faculty ratio at Bowdoin is 9:1) and professors who focus on teaching rather than research. Chen, 23, explains that he was won over by Bowdoin’s commitment to nurturing skills for life, rather than simply for the workplace. “Liberal arts is abut fostering your identity,” he says. “They want to cultivate your mind.” He admits that liberal arts may be a hard sell in a country with an increasingly competitive job market. The book states bluntly that in the short term, a liberal-arts education won’t improve job prospects. “In China, employers are looking for someone who can come in and start working immediately when they graduate, not someone who still needs to be trained in practical skills,” Chen says.

The book, which received wide media coverage in China and now has a waiting list for its second print run, is certainly timely: it plays into a growing debate in China about what national universities should be teaching. The country needs a workforce with the skills and creativity to help move away from low-cost manufacturing and, in economic terms, move up the value chain. And some educators believe liberal-arts training is vital to help China deal with its increasingly complex new realities. Yet the well-known intellectual historian Xu Jilin believes that China’s rapid expansion of higher education has had a detrimental effect on curriculum as the country’s universities race to compete globally. “Education these days in like factory-farming chickens,” he says. “Universities all wan to get into international rakings—and most of these depend on research. They’re not interested in providing a unique education for our kids.”

1.According to Chen Yongfang, the benefits of attending liberal-arts colleges are the following EXCEPT        .

         A.closer relationship with tutors

         B.teachers more devoted to teaching

C.practical skills for getting a job in China

B.it is more difficult for liberal-arts graduates to find a job because employers don’t believe that they can perform well

C.literal-arts education is of little help to China’s economic development

D.research universities received more Chinese applicants than smaller liberal-arts colleges

3.The word “detrimental” in Para.3 probably means “_________.”

         A.instant       B.rewarding C.damaging  D.obvious

4.According to Xu Jilin,___________.

A.the expansion of higher education has improved the competitive strength of China’s universities

B.Chinese universities are providing the same courses as foreign universities

C.many universities are not paying enough attention to teaching

D.research should gain more attention in order to improve China’s universities’ rankings

5.This passage is most probably adapted from_________.

         A.an article introducing liberal arts

B.an article introducing the book A True Liberal Arts Education

On March 23, 2010, Google Inc took a major step in withdrawing(收回) its search-engine services from Beijing to Hong Kong. Google acknowledged that it failed to make progress in talks with the Chinese government for permission to let Google stop censoring(审查) its search results.

Since posting the announcement on its website, Google’s stock(股票) price has fallen from $595 to about $567, while Baidu, the leading search engine in China, has seen its stock price rise by 50%. A potential foreign beneficiary(受益者) is Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine. And while Bing may not exactly have got the keys to a very rich kingdom, its managing group understand their good fortune and have not been shy about sticking the knife into Google. Craig Mundie, a chief officer of Bing, told China Daily that “we feel good enough now,” adding, “but it’s a 20-year journey, and not just three years. And Microsoft is here to stay.”

Several other Chinese Internet companies are no doubt moving swiftly to take advantage of this situation. Both Sohu. com—a Yahoo-like website in China— and a hugely successful instant-messaging company called Tencent(腾讯) are already trying to hire Google China staff. Analysts believe that of the two, Tencent is in the better position. Nearly 70% of China’s 400 million Internet users use instant-messaging, and of those, 80% use Tencent’s system, known as QQ. That’s the major reason why Tencent’s potential market is bigger than Baidu’s, and an insider at the company acknowledges that the search business is full of opportunities.

All the competitors of Google do what the Chinese government requires: censor their search results. If Microsoft and the others intend to be in China “to stay,” as Craig Mundie put it, there is no chance that the censoring principle will change for them.

As to the Google’s exit, one of its investors made the comment recently, “There’re still a lot of us who believe that they’ve made the wise choice. But Google is apparently out and I guess we just get to accept.” However, some Chinese netizens regretted the loss of its professional services on google. cn, such as maps, videos, music and translations.

73.Google.cn stops its business in China because _____.

A. too many companies enter the market         B. its stock price has fallen sharply

C. Chinese companies hire its workers           D. it refuses to censor the search results

74.How many Chinese beneficiaries are mentioned in the passage?

A. Two.               B. Three             C. Four.               D. Five.

75.When Google withdraws, _______.

A. Chinese netizens won’t have any professional service

B. only Chinese companies will provide search service

C. China’s attitude towards censoring won’t be changed

D. the Google managing group will regret its decision

76.A suggested title for this news would be ______.

A. When Google Withdraws From China        B. Who Wins in China’s Search Business

C. Who Will Profit When Google Exits         D. Why Google Loses to Other Competitors
