  Anne Holland’s speech

  Dear Students

I’m very happy to be your guest speaker today. It is a great pleasure to visit your school and to meet all of you.

I would like to tell you about myself.I have been a news reporter for the past fifteen years.I chose this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult.I have seen famines(饥荒), wars, earthquakes(地震), poverty and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness.

In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as

young as four years old. They lived by begging(乞讨)or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them.Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them and taught them. She gave them hope.

Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake. In one place, I found an old lady whose house was in ruins(成为废墟).Her son was missing and rescue workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son.He was alive.

Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious medical condition. He had undergone twenty operations and spent nearly his whole life in hospital.I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming.

In life, we need role models that we can admire(崇拜)and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people.

1.How long has Anne Holland been a news reporter?

2.What did Rosa do for the children?

3.Was the old lady’s son saved?

4.In which country did Anne Holland give this speech?

5.What lesson do you think Anne Holland learnt from these three people?

I was tired and hungry after a long day of work. When I walked into the living-room, my 12-year-old son looked up at me and said, “I  31   you.” I did not know  32  to say, and I just stood there, looking  33  at him. My first thought was that he must need help with his homework. Then I asked, “What was that all about ?” “Nothing,” he said, “My teacher said we should tell our parents we love them and see what they say.”

The next day I called his teacher to  34  more about what my son said and how the other parents had reacted﹡. “Most of the fathers had the  35  response﹡ as you did,” the teacher said, ”When I first suggested ﹡that we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would be surprised.”

Then the teacher explained , “ I want my students to know that feeling love is an important part of  36  . I’m trying to tell them it’s too bad that we don’t express﹡ our feelings. A boy  37 tell his parents he loves them.” The teacher understands that sometimes it is  38  for some of us to say something .

That evening when my son came to me, I took him in my arms and held on for a while, saying, “Hey, I love you,  39  .” I don’t know if saying that made either of us healthier,   40   I did feel pretty good.
