女人看见路边蹲着一个挑担老头儿，他身下的筐里满满一筐仙人掌，嫁接出各种形状，高高的底座像一座独立秀挺的山峰，山峰项部是形状不同的红、黄、绿各色仙人球。女人拿起仙人掌左右挑选了很久，价格不贵，与花鸟市场上的相比便宜许多，挑定了自己喜欢的两个，准备双数一起买。
老头儿满脸胡茬儿，一个劲说这植物的种种优点，如何好看好养还净化空气，未了搓着厚皮疙瘩的手说：“两个就算你小批发。”又便宜了一块钱。

老头儿站起来把东西包扎好，送进女人的车筐里。生意小，服务周到，站起身时，顺手捡起地上已成两截的东西，一起送进了女人的筐里。
