I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didn't say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me. "I can't tell anything," he finally said. "I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college. I can't say don't do this and do that, because everything is different and I don't know what is going to come up. I can't help much with money either, but I think things will work out. "

He gave me a new check-book (支票簿) . "If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some things we can always sell." In four years all the checks I wrote were less than a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and sitting with the teachers' kids filled in the financial gaps.

"You know what you want to be, and they'll tell you what to take," my father went on. "When you get a job,be sure it’s honest(诚实的),and work hard.”I knew that soon I would be alone in the big town.and l would be missing the cool winds and a life where your thinking was done for you.

Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible that he had read so often.the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbors.I knew he would miss it.I knew, though, that I must take it.

Two years ago, my husband bought me a bicycle. If you live in a town, it is often faster than a car and you don't have to worry about parking(停车). You can leave it anywhere. As it has a seat at the back and a basket at the front, I can take my small daughter to school, to the library, to the shops, to anywhere.

I use it most in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter when it is cold and the rain is heavy.

You must of course be careful on a bicycle. Accidents are not the only problem though (尽管). One day I went shopping and came back to find my front wheel (轮) missing. It was a long walk to the bicycle shop. Now I have three strong locks.

My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for short journeys(旅行). He says it is better than waiting for a bus. He still uses his car for longer journeys, but I think that all this sitting down is making him fat and lazy. On my bicycle I get a lot of exercises and fresh air, and this makes me feel a lot younger.

1.The writer has had the bicycle for ________.

[ ]

A.two months
B.two years
C.two weeks
D.more than three years

2.A bike is better than a car because ________.

[ ]

A.it is much cheaper

B.it is often faster in a town

C.yon don't have to worry about parking a bike

D.both B and C

3.Why doesn't the writer like to use the bike in winter?

[ ]

A.Because it is cold in winter and she would be wet when it rains hard.

B.Because she has to be very careful.

C.Because there are many accidents.

D.All of the above.

4.Which of the following is not true?

[ ]

A.The writer is a mother.

B.She often goes to the school with her small daughter.

C.The wheels of her bike were stolen.

D.Her husband uses her bike at times.

5.What's the best title(标题) for this passage?

[ ]

A.MY BICYCLE

B.WHICH IS BETTER?

C.A PRESENT FROM MY HUSBAND

D.A BICYCLE
