About 500 years ago, the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus proved the Earth was round. Now American author Thomas Friedman tells us the Earth is flat in his bestseller: The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century.

If he is not joking, then why is the world flat? Friedman said it comes from technological forces. Because of the Internet and the World Wide Web, he believes geographical difficulties are disappearing. People and companies around the world can work together or against each other on the same level.

Bill Gates explains the meaning of this change best. Thirty years ago, he tells Friedman, if you had to choose between being born a gifted person in Shanghai and a common person in Poughkeepsie (A city in southeast New York), you would have chosen Poughkeepsie because your chances of living a successful life were much greater there. "Now," Gates says, "I would rather be a gifted person born in China than a common one born in Poughkeepsie." This shows that success today depends more on ability than on address.

Globalization(全球化), as he calls it, is driven by those persons: free writers and totally new businesses all over the world, especially in India and China. They can fight not just for low-wage producing but, increasingly, for the highest-end research and design(设计) work as well.

Big companies have played another important role in this globalization process. They move their factories from one country to another to cut costs. It's usual now for an engineer in China to be working for an American company. The Internet keeps them in close touch with their American workmates. People everywhere, from the US to China, have standardized procedures(标准化过程) for getting their work done.

The Reuters News Agency provides a good example. The company moved its financial(财经的) operations from London and New York to India. The Indian workers have the necessary technical skills. But the pays and office costs are less than one-fifth of what they would be in New York or London.

53. What do you know about Friedman according to the passage?

A. He is a fool by saying the world is flat.

B. He looks at the world with a technological eye.

C. He is as wise as Bill Gates, and works well with Gates.

D. He thinks Christopher Columbus’s idea about the earth is no longer correct.

54. Which of the following is an example of “globalization”?

A. The Reuters News Agency moved its financial operations to India.

B. People and companies can work together or not on different levels.

C. Totally new businesses are able to fight just for low-cost producing.

D. People would rather choose to be a common person in Poughkeepsie.

55. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. Bill Gates and Friedman. B. Friedman and His Bestseller.

C. Why the 21st Century World Flat. D. Globalization and Bill Gates’ choices.

"Sesame Street" has been called "the longest street in the world". That is because the television program
by that name can now be seen in many parts of the world. That program became one of American exports
soon after it went on the air in New York in 1969.
In the United States more than six million children watch the program regularly. The viewers include more
than half the country's pre-school children, from every kind of economic, racial (种族的), and geographical
group.
Although some educators object (反对) to some parts of the program, parents praise (赞扬) it highly.
Many teachers also consider it a great help, though some teachers find that problems come out when first
graders who have learnt from "Sesame Street" are in the same class with children who have not watched the
program.
Tests have shown that children from all racial, geographical, and economic backgrounds have benefited
(受益) from watching it. Those who watch it five times a week learn more than occasional (偶尔的) viewers.
In the US the program is shown at different hours during the week in order to increase the number of children
who can watch it regularly.
The programs all use songs, stories, jokes and pictures to give children a basic understanding of numbers,
letters and human relationships. But there are some differences. For example, the Spanish program, produced
in Mexico City, devotes more time to teaching whole words than to teaching separate (单独的) letters.
Why has "Sesame Street" been so much more successful than other children's shows? Many reasons have
been suggested. People mention the educational theories (理论) of its creators, the support by the government
and private businesses, and the skillful use of various TV tricks. Perhaps an equally important reason is that
mothers watch it along with their children. This is partly because famous adult stars often appear on it. But
the best reason for the success of the program may be that it makes every child watching it feel able to learn.
The child finds himself learning, and he wants to learn more.
1. "Sesame Street" is actually ______.
[     ]
A. a street in the US
B. a program for children
C. a program for teachers
D. a program for students
2. Children who often watch the program ______.
[     ]
A. can have programs in school
B. will find it a great help
C. will take no interest in their studies
D. needn't go to school
3. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
[     ]
A. It is shown at different hours during the week.
B. Famous adult stars often appear on it.
C. This program has been on for less than forty years.
D. Children learn and enjoy themselves while watching it.
4. Why is "Sesame Street" so popular in the world?
[     ]
A. Because it is supported by the government and businesses.
B. Because it uses different kinds of skillful tricks.
C. Because mothers watch it along with their children.
D. Because it makes every child watching it feel able to learn.
5. The best title for this passage can be ______.
[     ]
A. Sesame Street

C. TV Programs
D. A Great Success
