    One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped to pick it up, she dropped other bags. He came to help her. “Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” she said kindly, smiling.
    A special feeling came to him. These were the first kind words he had ever heard. He watched her until she went far away, and then he whistled to his dog and went directly to the river nearby.
    “Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy” he repeated the woman's words. Then in a low voice he said to his dog, “You are a nice little dog!” Tiger raised its ears as if it understood.
    “Unum! Even a dog likes it!” he said. “Well, Tiger, I won't say unkind words to you any more.” Tiger waved its tail happily.
    The boy thought and thought. Finally he looked at himself in the river. He saw nothing but a dirty boy. He washed his face carefully. Again he looked. He saw a clean nice boy. He was amazed. From then on, he had a new life.
    After telling this, the businessman stopped for a while, and then he said, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the very place where that kind woman planted in me the first seed of kindness. All of us should learn about kindness. What a great power it has!"

    My teachers suggested that I see a speech specialist (专家) in school.

    I never really gave much thought to my speech. If other people understood what I was saying, then that was good enough. I didn’t mind repeating myself many times.

    Before testing me, the speech specialist asked me what I thought of having good speech. I told her I thought it was not important.

    “Well, when you are in an interview for a job, and they don’t know what you are saying, what are they going to say to you? Nice meeting you, bye,” she said.

    Maybe good speech was important. I took part in 20-minute classes each week with the specialist.

    After she tested me, she told me that I spoke too fast, and didn’t give enough eye contact (眼神交流). I learned that when I made eye contact with someone, it meant that I was talking to that person, and I could also see what he or she thought about what I was saying.

    When my first speech class started, I found that I had been speaking too fast to be understood. Every time I spoke too fast, the specialist stopped me and told me to start again. At first, I got stopped after almost every other sentence. After a while, I felt my speech slow down. I wasn’t sure if people could understand me better, but my friends stopped asking me to repeat myself.

    Speech is an important skill to have. If you do have good speech, that’s a good thing, but if you don’t have it, it is never too late to improve.

    　　Languages keeps evolving(进化、发展), and English is no exception．It is a language that embraces(欣然接受)new words that may be cool today but gone tomorrow．

    　　There are, however, some words and phrases that have stood the test of time．OK, which has become the international standard for expressing agreement, is a good example．

    　　But why is this rather odd(奇怪的)expression so popular and so useful when we could use any number of other words to say the same thing?

    　　Writing in The Times, Allen Metcalf, author of OK：The Improbable Story of America’s Greatest Word, writes：“What OK provided that the others did not was neutrality(中性), a way to express agreement without having to offer an opinion．”

    　　For example, if someone asks you “Shall we go for a walk after lunch?” you can simply respond “OK”．There you go－no extra opinions．Just straight, plain old OK．

    　　So just where did this rather curious expression come from? The origins of OK have been widely disputed(辩论，争论)．Some people have guessed that OK was the name of a person or a product．

    　　Speakers of many different languages have had their say on this question, keen to claim the term as their own．

    　　Writing an article for London’s Metro newspaper, Metcalf states：‘O and K are present in every language of the world, as expressions that can be abbreviated(缩写)OK．” For example：French－“O qu-oui”, “yes indeed”; German－“Ohne Korrektur”,“ without correction needed”; and in Latin or Greek, “Olla kalla”, “all good”．

    　　But, does it sound a little too informal with this popular little expression?

    　　Apparently not．

    　　In a speech where he stated that his election(当选)would not be a radical(激进的)result to all problems, President Obama said：“…even though I am president…, AI-Qaida is still a threat(威胁)and that we cannot pretend somehow that because Barack Hussein Obama got elected as president, suddenly everything’s going to be OK,” he said．

    　　So, there you go, straight from the president．It’s OK to say OK, and thanks to the expression’s widespread usage across the world, you can be understood anywhere．
