He was struggling(费劲)to tie his shoes. I was struggling with whether I should help him.

I did, and he was grateful.

“Thank you,”he said.

“I’m glad I could help. I just thought it would be easier for me to reach,”I said.

He was a disabled man, and forced to look down most of the time. His arms and legs were twisted(扭曲的)terribly, and he couldn’t do what the rest of us would consider easy tasks. He always managed to look up to see how you reacted(反应)to his words, however. He had a big smile, making me feel comfortable.

I was still on my knees by his wheelchair. “Nice shoes,”he said.

“Thanks. No one ever complimented me on them before,”I said.

“No one has the same view of the world as I do,”he replied.

“Tell me about the world as you see it,”I said smiling.

“Most people can see if someone is comfortable with them or not in their eyes. I see it in their feet,”he said.“If people keep moving their feet, I just let them go, because I know they’re impatient with me. I don’t want to make people uncomfortable.”

“What about me?”I asked.

“I could see your compassion. And then you came down to my level. I was the one who was nervous,”he said.“I don’t normally have someone look me in the eye.”

“They don’t know that they’re missing,”I told him.

My brother and I often fight with each other over small things. One day our father said to us, “Tomorrow we will take part in the Ray Home Sports Day. Both of you must go with me. Perhaps you can learn something from those children.” My brother laughed, “Dad, Ray is a home for physically disabled children. What can we learn from them?”

“You will see,” our father said.

Our father works as a volunteer at Ray. The children there have problems with their hands, speech, walking or hearing. Every day, he spends hours helping them to move or exercise their legs or arms.

The following day, he took us to Ray Home. When we got there, we found a nice place to sit down. Finally, the sports began. There was a 50-meter race to see who could run fastest. All the runners were physically disabled. As the race started, all the children moved as fast as they could. Just then, one of the girls fell over and hurt her leg. She began to cry at the top of her voice.

All the children stopped to help the poor girl. Then they all held hands and finished the race together. My brother and I were surprised to see this: the children weren’t interested in winning the race-they were more interested in helping each other to finish the race.

When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming (指责) somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at solving problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague (同事) causes you problems on the job for being short of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t depend on the person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about – creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose mistake it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

1. What does the underlined word “remedy” probably mean?

A. Avoid. B. Accept.

C. Improve. D. Consider.

2. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should ______.

A. blame him for his being short of responsibility

B. find a better way to deal with the problem

C. tell him to find the cause of the problem

D. ask a more able colleague for help

3. What can be the best title for the passage?

A. A Winner’s Secret. B. A Winner’s Chance.

C. A Winner’s Problem. D. A Winner’s Progress.
