Many people believe that yellowing and wetness are the greatest enemies of stamps. In fact, stamps are afraid of not only wetness, but also light and dirty things. People protect their stamps in several different ways.

To protect stamps,we should never touch the stamps with our hands. This avoids moving dirty things onto them. Stamp tweezers (镊子) should be used in all conditions.

Stamps are printed things. The color will slowly disappear if the stamps are put in the light for a long time. So we should not put stamps in the light for long. Direct sunlight must be avoided as well.

Wetness is an important problem for stamps. Some collectors will put stamps in separate plastic (塑 料的) bags. However,it is possible that some stamps have taken in some water from the air before they are put into the plastic bags. Stamps become yellow easily and rapidly after they take in wet air. To protect the stamps, some people also put the stamps into a special room which has a machine to keep the air cool and dry. However, not many people can afford that.

To keep stamps, stamp collectors usually put them under plastic covers. It is a common and simple way. This helps because the plastic cover keeps the stamps off the wet air. It also stops the fingers from touching the stamps.

Some collectors prefer to store stamps inside a plastic box with desiccants (干燥剂) . However,we should take care not to let the stamps touch the desiccants. On top of that, don't take your stamps out on a wet day.

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Noah Webster was born on October 16 ,1758,in the West Division of Hartford, where his father farmed and worked as a weaver. His mother was a housewife.

Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved so much to learn that his parents let him go to Yale,Connecticut's only college. Noah graduated in 1778. He desired (渴望) to study law,but his parents didn't have more money to send him to school. So,in order to make a living,Noah taught in Glastonbury,Hartford and West Hartford. Later he studied law.

Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed (挤满) into one-room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books,so in 1783,Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue-Backed Speller” because of its blue cover.

For 100 years,Noah's book taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time. Ben Franklin used Noah's book to teach his granddaughter to read.

When Noah was 43 ,he started writing the first American dictionary. He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English colour and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren’t in English dictionaries like skunk and squash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah accomplished (完成) his dictionary in 1828,at the age of 70 ,the first American dictionary came out. It had 70,000 words in it.

Noah did many things in his life. He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks. Americanized the English language, and edited magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843,he was considered an American hero.

The eagle has the longest feathers life of its group. It can reach up to 70 years. But to reach this age,the eagle must make a hard and painful decision. talon    When an eagle reaches near 40,its short sharp beak becomes bent (弯曲的) . Its long and once flexible (灵活的) talons can no longer catch animals or birds for food. And its old and heavy wings with thick feathers on its body make it difficult to fly. Then, the eagle has only two choices: to die or to go through a painful time of change which needs five months.

When the eagle feels weak and is about to die,it goes to a place far away on the top of a mountain and sits on a nest. For a new life, the eagle knocks its beak against a rock until it pulls its beak out. After pulling it out,the eagle waits for a new beak to grow. And then it pulls out its talons and old feathers. It takes the eagle five months to complete its change and get a new life. We can call it its rebirth. So it can live for 30 more years.
