    Singapore, July 12－many people enjoy chewing(咀嚼) gum, but in 1992 Singapore decided to make it against the law. The government said that people were not careful about throwing away used gum. Instead, they dropped it on sidewalks and on the streets where it made a big mess. Chewing gum also got stuck in the doors of the underground trains so that the doors didn’t close properly. This meant the trains didn’t run on time. Singapore said that people had to give up chewing gum or pay a lot of money to the government. During the time without chewing gum, the streets and underground trains of Singapore were clean.
    Now the government of Singapore is changing the rules a little. Some dentists say that chewing sugarless gum can help take care of people’s teeth.     Traveling by train is usually not easy in China. It can be hard to get a ticket. When you’re traveling to the railway station, you look at your watch, for you are afraid you will miss your train.
    But there is good news for people traveling between Beijing and Shanghai. Construction (建设) on the express railway (高速铁路) between the two cities started just before the Spring Festival of 2008. When it is finished by 2013, taking a train will be as easy as taking a bus.
    “There will be trains every several minutes. Buying a ticket, getting through the checkpoint (检查站) and taking your seat, will take just 10 minutes,” said an engineer.
    There may be high-speed trains running at 350 kilometers an hour. The travel time between the two cities will decrease from 10 to about 5 hours. The trains will carry twice the present number of passengers.
    The new line will be 1,318 kilometers long and go across specially built bridges. It will run along side the present line. There will be 21 stations in Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu.
    “The cost of traveling by the express railway may be around 800 yuan. That will be more expensive than an ordinary train, but cheaper than by air.” Said Zhang Xiaoling, a Jiangsu government official.
    According to Zhang, the higher price is caused by the large cost of the railway project. At about 200 billion yuan, the project may be even more expensive than the Three Gorges Project (三峡工程).

    Every day in China, about 200 million children go to school. Many of them take school buses. What should we do to keep these students safe on the road?
    On April 5, 2012，the State Council(国务院) published new rules about school bus safety. These new rules are stricter than the old ones.
    Under the new rules, local governments must make sure that students go to nearby school or boarding schools to reduce traffic risks . Also, local governments must help kids in the countryside reach their school buses.
    From now on, school buses have a speed limit of 80 km/h on highways and 60 km/h on normal roads. While on the road, other cars must let school buses go first.
    The new rules also say that school buses must never be overloaded (超载的).
    There are many other rules as well. A school bus must have more than seven seats. On each bus, there must be at least one adult to keep an eye on the kids. Each school bus must have a fire extinguisher (灭火器), a first aid kit (急救箱) and a GPS.
    A series of school bus accidents happened in China in 2011. To stop such accidents, the Central Government decided to strengthen (加强) the rules for school buses.
    The most serious accident happened in Gansu in November,2011. When a nine-seat minibus crashed. There were more than 60 children inside, and 21 of them died.
    I hope such terrible things won’t happen again and all of us can pay more attention to the safety of the students.
