First, some family names come from the place(地点) of their homes. If a man lives on or near(在…附近) a hill, his family name may be Hill. In England, people’s family name may be Wood, Lake, because they live near the woods (树林)or lakes(湖泊).

Second, family names come from a man’s job(工作). If a man is a cook（厨师）, his family name may be Cook.
