Last week our class had a parents’ meeting. At the meeting, all the parents talked about whether doing a lot of homework was useful or not.
One possible version:
Last week our class had a parents’ meeting. At the meeting, all the parents talked about whether doing a lot of homework was useful or not
Most parents thought that doing much homework was useful. They thought by doing a lot of homework, the students could review what they had learned. It would also help to develop the students’ minds and stop them playing computer games.
But a few parents thought that too much homework was useless. Because doing much homework took a lot of time and the students could not have a good rest. What’s more, they could not do the things they liked.
In my opinion, doing some suitable homework is necessary and helpful.

Gina was a 3rd grader. She was very clever, but she had no friends at school until Rita joined her class. New to the city and too shy to make any friends, Rita did not mind being Gina's friend. At least she had someone to play with.
One day the teacher scolded (训斥) Rita for not concentrating when she was doing some math problems. The whole class laughed at her and Rita cried hard. The teacher had patiently explained how to do them, but Rita was just not able to understand.
Gina told her mother about Rita's bad day. "Why don't you try to help her?" asked her mother. " She likes you very much."
" Mommy, I don't have time to waste." said Gina.
" But Rita is your friend and if you don't help her, who will?" said her mother. But Gina didn't think so.
" Then Gina's mother decided to act tough(强硬地)." If you don't help her, I will not let you watch cartoons for a week."
Extremely unhappy, Gina taught Rita. Rita understood, for Gina knew how to explain things simply. Rita was excited and told everyone what a good friend Gina was.
One day, Gina made a mistake, and the principal (校长) asked Gina to pick up the waste paper in every classroom after school.

London used to be “foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog. In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.
根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并在答题卡上按要求作答。

B. A law was made to keep people from burning coal in their houses.
C. Many factories in the city were closed.
D. People paid more attention to cleaning their city.
3. What does the underlined word “pea-soupers” refer to?
A. Smog B. Smoke C. Gas D. Coal
4.The problem of air pollution is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve because of _____ reasons.
A. one B. two C. three D. four
5.What do you think the government will do with the air pollution?
A. The government will ask people to burn coal.
B. The government will ask people always use gas instead of coal.
C. The government will close all the factories in China.
