¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿ Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone¡¯s eyes are different. So in the future you won¡¯t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You¡¯ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition (ÑÛ¾¦Ê¶±ð) program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

Eye-recognition is a course of recognizing iris (ºçĤ), which includes the following steps. First, a kind of machine needs to collect different examples of one¡¯s iris from his eyes and store them. Second, when this person goes to the bank to take out money, this machine will have iris feature extraction (²É¼¯). Then, this machine will compare the examples kept in it with iris feature extraction. Once the examples and the feature extraction are the same, this person will be identified (ʶ±ð), and he will take out the money from the bank successfully.

However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We have already had machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger. Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don¡¯t change as you get older, and don¡¯t get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct now. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.

In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿I had an old neighbour, a doctor named Gibbs. When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives£¬he was planting trees. He had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees.

Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants made them grow weaker. He said he had to make things difficult for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how, if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.

So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees' attention.

Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Sometimes I walked by his house and looked at the trees I'd watched him plant 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.

I planted several trees myself a few years ago. Two years of caring for these trees meant they grew up weakly. Every time a cold wind blew, my trees shook. Adversity seemed to be good for Doctor Gibb's trees£¬they could never relax.

Every night before I go to bed£¬I check on my two sons. I often pray(Æíµ»)that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to experience difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots£¬so when the rains fall and the winds blow£¬we won't be separated.

¡¾1¡¿What did Doctor Gibbs do to the trees he planted?

A. He let them grow quickly.B. He beat them to get their attention.

C. He helped them search for water.D. He read a newspaper near them.

¡¾2¡¿What does the word "Adversity" in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. Difficult living conditions.B. Little water.

C. Enough care or attention.D. Bad weather.

¡¾3¡¿What does the writer learn from Doctor Gibbs?

A. Elders are treasures.

B. No pain£¬no gain.

C. Two heads are better than one.

D. Only those who bear(ÈÝÈÌ)the most become the highest.
