What invention could you not live without? A few years ago, a survey asked adults(成人) and teenagers to choose which of five things they "couldn't live without". The choices were the microwave oven(微波炉), cell phone, personal computer, car,and toothbrush (牙刷).Believe it or not,the toothbrush got the first place. Nearly half the adults and one-third of the teenagers said they could not live without a toothbrush.
I guess when you think about ways people cleaned their teeth before toothbrushes were invented, you might not want to live without your toothbrush, either. Would you want to chew (口且嚼)on a stick or bird feather(羽毛)?How about cleaning your teeth with a stick and salt?
We can thank William Addis for the first mass-produced toothbrushes. Addis took a bone and made small holes in it. He tied some bristles(刷子毛)together and put them into the holes he had made in the bone. He began selling these around the year 1780 in England. Soon he became a rich man.
Over 150 years went by before American really picked up the brushing habit. In World War II,soldiers had been taught to brush their teeth every day. They brought the habit home with them. That's good news for our teeth!

Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气层),because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather station. So the scientists there can see the weather of any part of the world and tell how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries can receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, they compare them with the earlier ones. They may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In the next weather forecast, they can tell people about it.
So the weather satellites offer great help for the scientists at the stations. In the past, they could forecast the weather about 24 or 48 hours earlier. Now they can make good forecasts for 3 or 5 days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).
