A stamp is just a piece of paper with a picture and some words printed on one side and some glue(胶水)on the other side. What makes one of these bits of paper worth any money at all ? What makes a ten-fen stamp worth ten fen'!
When you buy a stamp, you also buy service from the post office. You get the letter sent by post. After the stamp has done its job,the post office says it is worthless. You must buy a new one for each letter you send.
But people often pay money for stamps that have already been used. Stamp collectors,or philatelists(集邮家).have fun just trying to collect as many different kinds as possible. Certain
kinds are hard to find. To get one of these uncommon stamps, some collectors are willing to pay a great deal of money. They think it is worthwhile and that gives it value. If you collect stamps because they are especially beautiful or tell an interesting story,or show all kinds of animals, then those are the ones that have value to you.

Sometimes something looks different from another thing, but it is usually the same. Sometimes something looks the same as another thing, but it is really different.
Sometimes we cannot believe our eyes. Here is an example. If we are standing in front of an entrance of a tunnel,we can see the other end where we go out. We feel the entrance much bigger than the other end. If we go through the tunnel,we find that the ends are the same size. One is not bigger than the other. They are the same size.
Now let’s turn around and look through the tunnel from the other end. Now we find that the end near us looks bigger. The other end looks smaller. But we know that they are the same size.
Things that are near us seem big. Things that are not near us seem small. We know that one lamp post in the streets is just like another. They are all equally tall. But if an artist draws a picture of a street,he will not make the lamp posts all the same size. He will make the first one big,the second one a little smaller, and the third one a little smaller than the second one. The ones that are the farthest away are the smallest.
