阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从1~25各题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案.

While I was at school, I 1 train with Spurs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I also 2 for English schoolboys, so I suppose I was 3 a school boy star.

I didn't really get into 4 at school. I had my two elder brothers there for 5 of the time that I was there, so my stay at the school wasn't that hard. 6 other children had a really hard time.

I left 7 the end of the Fourth Year, and that caused a bit of trouble. I was allowed 8 maths and technical drawing early. I passed them 9 , but unfortunately I failed in woodwork. If I'd stayed on 10 12 subjects like the other children.

It was a big decision to leave early so as 11 take all my exams. It could have meant that I'd wasted 12 years. But how many could get the 13 that I had? I'm told that only one in 1000 makes it in 14 , so you have only a very slim chance. But I decided to go for it and looking back it was the 15 thing to do.

I didn't support Spurs 16 a boy. I supported QPR, my local team. But to play for Spurs, 17 had just won the FA Cup, was interesting to me. There were so many 18 , and of course Bill Nicholson was the 19 thena great manager.

I didn't have any girlfriends at 20 .I was 21 deeply involved (陷于) in football that I didn't have time. 22 I don't have direct contact with my old school friends, I own a sports 23 in the area, so they often drop into the shop and talk about the old days, 24 is really nice. I'm always pleased to see them.

I would advise anyone 25 to be a footballer to stay on at school to do their exams. If a club wants you badly enough they'll come in for you later.

I entered St Thoma’s Hospital as a medical student at the age of 18 and spent five years there. I was an unsatisfactory student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it.I wanted, I had always wanted to be a writer, and in the evening, after my high tea, I wrote and read. Before long, I wrote a novel, called Liza of“Lambeth”, which I sent to a publisher and was accepted. It appeared during my last year at the hospital and had something of a success. It was of course an accident, but naturally I did not know that.I felt I could afford to give up medicine and make writing my profession ; so, three days after I graduated from the school of medicine, I set out for Spain to write another book.Looking back now, and knowing as I do the terrible difficulties of making a living by writing, I realize I was taking a fearful risk.It never even occurred to me.

The next ten years were very hard, and I earned an average of £ 100 a year. Then I had a bit of luck. The manager of the Court Theatre put on a play that failed ; the next play he arranged to put on was not ready, and he was at his wits’ end.He read a play of mine and, though he did not much like it, he thought it might just run for the six weeks till the play he had in mind to follow it with could be produced. It ran for fifteen months.Within a short while I had four plays running in London at the same time.Nothing of the kind had ever happened before.I was the talk of the town. One of the students at St Thomas’s Hospital asked the eminent surgeon with whom I had worked whether he remembered me.“Yes, I remember him quite well,”he said.“One of our failures, I’m afraid.”

Suddenly all the lights on that crowded underground train went out. Then it stopped in that dark tunnel(隧道).
We waited. We expected the lights to come on again soon. But nothing happened. Then I began to smell something. Yes, I could smell smoke. So I asked myself, “Is this train on fire?” People around me then began to cry out in fear. “The train is on fire!” they cried.
Then the woman standing next to me suddenly fell on the floor. I realized she was overcome by the smoke. Then I saw flames appearing. “If something does not happen soon,” I said to myself, “I will be burnt alive!”
But as I stood there in the dark in that crowded burning train, I could see no way to escape. I thought, “No one can save me from certain death but God. Only God can make a way for any of us to escape death in this train.”
Before the flames reached me, I found the open door and I climbed out of the train into the dark tunnel. Then as quickly as I could, I ran from the burning train down the tunnel. Now as I ran I could hear hundreds of people that were locked in that burning train, crying out for help. I knew I could do nothing to help them, so I ran on.
Then for two hours I kept walking in that dark train tunnel. At last I saw a light in the distance. I asked myself “Why did God enable me to escape death?” I decided, “God must have a purpose for saving my life. He must want me to help other people experience what He could do for them.”

On the first day of the 11th grade, our new math teacher Mr Washington asked me to go to the blackboard to do a math problem. I told him that I couldn’t do it. He asked, “Why not?” I paused, and then I said, “Because I’m educable mentally retarded (可教育智能迟滞).”
He came from behind his desk and looked at me. “Don’t ever say that again. Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality,” he said.
It was a very special moment for me. Doctors said that I was educable mentally retarded in the fifth grade, and I was put back into the fourth grade. When I was in the eighth grade, I failed again.
But Mr Washington changed my life. This person always gave students the feeling that he had high expectations of them, and then all of the students did their best to live up to what those expectations were. He often said, “You have greatness within you.”
One day, I caught up with him in the parking place and said, “Mr Washington, is there greatness within me, sir?”
He said, “Yes, Mr Brown.”
“But what about the fact that I failed English, math, and history? What about that, sir? I’m slower than most kids.”
“It doesn’t matter. It just means that you have to work harder. Your grades don’t determine who you are or what you can produce in your life.”
“I want to buy my mother a house.”
“It is possible, Mr Brown. You can do that.” And he turned to walk away.
“Mr Washington?”
“What do you want now?”
“Uh, I’m the one, sir. One day you’re going to hear my name. I’m the one, sir.”
School was a real struggle for me. Mr   Washington put many demands on me. He made me believe that I could do it. At the end of that year, I was on the honor roll for the first time in my life.
Years later, I produced five programs on public television. When one of my programs was shown on the educational television channel, I had some friends call him. I was sitting by the phone waiting when he called me. He said, “May I speak to Mr Brown, please?”
“Oh, Mr Washington, is that you?”
“Yes, it’s me. You were the one, weren’t you?”
“Yes, sir, I was.”

      He entered a good university
    2. B.
      He earned much honor
    3. C.
      He got a good job
    4. D.
