    16．I often teach about happiness and what has become clear is this：There are some qualities always unhappy people have．Here are some of them．
    Happy people know life can be hard and tend to live through hard times．They take responsibility for how they got themselves into a mess，and focus on getting themselves out of it as soon as possible．Unhappy people see themselves as victims of life and stay stuck in the"look what happened to me"attitude instead of finding a way through and out to the other side．

    There's only so much space between the two ears．Unhappy people fill that space with constant worry and fear．Happy people experience fear and worry too，but make an important difference between feeling it and living with it．When fear or worry crosses a happy person's mind，they'11ask themselves if there's an action they can take to prevent their fear or worry from happening and they take it．If not，they realize they're spinning in fear and they lay it down．

        On Christmas morning，Linda wakes up，and tries to imagine the wide-eyed surprise of children in another household as they unwrap the presents she carefully chose for them．Linda has never met the children，but that's all part of the joy of giving as secret Santas，she says．

         Linda and Tony are an American couple living in Toronto，Canada，and Linda did charitable work as a member of the American Women's Club of Toronto．As the name suggests，members are U．S．citizens living in Toronto，who join together for fellowship and community service．
        To find her"adopted"family，Linda goes to the local schools and requests a wish list for a family that's struggling to survive．Last year she helped a single mother with three children．The mother works as a cleaning lady in a nursing home．
    "The list is always heartbreaking．They have an opportunity to ask for anything and do just the opposite，asking for basic clothes or simple toys，"she says．"We always buy the kids a new winter coat，hats，and gloves．"She also buys gifts for the parents．
        Last year Linda asked the mother for a second wish list--one that didn't include the basics．"Every child should have a Christmas that sticks with them for a lifetime．"She purchased iPods for the two older children and a video game system for the youngest．"I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this，"says Linda．"Pay attention to what's going on in your own backyard--no matter where you live．"

    I started school at the age of three but my physical activity was severely limited due to the nature of my disability．The word pity and the puzzle-horror look on people's faces as they stare at me have been my life's companion since those early days．

    Having personally experienced a lot of discrimination，I decided that it was time to create awareness about disability in my community．I went to work at the Rotaract Club，an organization that assists the poor in society．However，I noticed that it runs on an easy charity model-food，clothes，sometimes cash．Even though this approach serves immediate needs，I knew that we needed to and could do more．
    Being the only disabled member in the club made it difficult to express my views．So，as soon as I retired from the Rotaract Club I produced Dear Diary．It is a play which is based on my real life experiences as well as those with similar experiences．I insist that the Asian community need to look deeply into its beliefs towards persons with disabilities and establish structures of social support for them．Someone must teach them that an individual's inner self is even precious．
