Raising Confident Kids
Self-esteem(自尊) is a collection of beliefs or feelings we have about ourselves. Having a healthy self-esteem can protect us through difficult times and help us remain focused on what is important to us. Research shows that children with high self-esteem grow up to be more confident adults. Self-esteem building should start from young. 【小题1】
Praise actions
Young children need feedback. It’s how they measure their actions and it plays a role in learning from experience. Provide specific praise about actual actions performed and efforts made in the process. 【小题2】 .
Identify strengths
Preschoolers are always watching each other. On the bright side, they learn new things from each other. On the other side, they can become self-critical when they see a peer accomplishing something they still struggle to do. 【小题3】 Tell your children to focus on their strengths when they start to draw comparisons.
Foster(培养) a sense of belonging
Young children may not understand how peer pressure (同龄人的压力) works, but they feel it when they’re being excluded(排除). Show your children that they are important by listening to and responding to their needs and ideas. As much as possible, save grown-up conversations for later so that you can have family conversations. 【小题4】
【小题5】
As much as they need us, they also need to work on taking small steps towards independence. When they know they can do things, they feel more confident. Teach problem-solving skills. Step aside and let them work on challenges before jumping in to help. Help by asking, “ How can we do this in a different way? Let’s come up with some ideas together.” Getting kids involved in problem-solving teaches them how to deal with challenges in the future.
Building and maintaining healthy self-esteem can be a lifelong process, but the sooner you start, the more confident your children will become.

B.Spend quality time with children
C.Try to address their concerns as they arise, no matter how minor.

It’s important for everyone to learn how to apologize effectively. You might think a simple “I’m sorry” will take care of everything. 【小题1】 There are some situations in which you need to apologize properly.
Apologize truely.
Apologizing through a half-hearted “Sorry” will get you nowhere. 【小题2】 If you really want to apologize, you must do it truely. Accept the fact that you were in the wrong. 【小题3】
Contrary to what you might think, apologizing over and over again isn’t going to help, especially if you’re apologizing to someone who’s your boss.
Don’t wait too long to apologize.
One piece of advice on how to apologize effectively is to do it as soon as you realize your mistake. Some people put off giving an apology because they think it will save them from the offended (被冒犯的) person’s anger. However, that is just not polite. If you can’ t approach the person personally at once, send him or her a message first. 【小题4】
Don’t expect too much.
You can’t expect that person to forgive you immediately. If you’re going to apologize, you have to be prepared for the worst. The conversation isn’t going to be the most comfortable one either. 【小题5】
Learning how to apologize effectively is very important. It shows people that you are a very kind person.
A.Don’t apologize again and again.
B.However, that’s not exactly true.
C.Pay a visit to others ahead of time.
D.You’d better prepare yourself for anything.

Dear Seth,
You’re only three years old, and at this point in your life you can’t read, much less understand what I’m going to try to tell you in this letter. But someday, when you’re ready, I hope you will find some wisdom and value in what I share with you.
Life can be cruel
【小题1】 They’ll tease you or try to hurt you because you’re different.

It often seems that people have a hard time in speaking a seemingly familiar name. Did you ever have someone's name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were not able to recall it? When this happened, what did you do? Next time this happens again, what should you do?
You should not try to recall it. Instead, just do something else for a couple of minutes and then the name may come into your head. Why? The name is just there, since you have met this person and learned his name. It, waiting there, only has to be dug out. The initial(最初的) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious (下意识的) activities that go to work to dig up a dim(模糊的)memory. Forcing yourself to recall almost never helps because it doesn't loosen your memory; it only tightens it.
That’s why students find the preparatory method greatly helpful in examinations. They read over the questions before trying to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most confident. At the same time, deeper mental activities in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult questions. By the time the easier questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will usually begin to come into consciousness. It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.
You see, forcing ourselves to think hard to recall something usually doesn’t help. Chances are that the harder we think, the more difficulty we face in thinking of what we want to. Offering our mind time to work is what we are expected to do.
| Problem | People 【小题1】______ to recall what they are sure they know. |
| Solution | They are 【小题2】______ not to try to recall it immediately. They can do something else for a while 【小题3】_____ of thinking hard about it. |

My daughter Chloe is starting out in college in the fall. With her newfound independence will come the newfound responsibilities of dealing with money.
【小题1】 Now I have a few lessons I’d like to share with Chloe, and with anyone else starting out in college.
【小题2】 OK, this is almost the only lesson you need. The biggest reason you get into money problems is that you spend money you don’t really have. Then you end up in the hole, and it’s hard to get out of the hole. You work too many hours to keep up with your spending. And you end up with a life that’s about nothing but trying to pay for all the spending on something you don’t really need.【小题3】
Make a very simple budget (预算). It’s a terrible thing for people who’ve never done a budget, but it’s not hard. 【小题4】 If the bills add up to more than the income, remove some bills.
Pay bills right away. If you have the money, pay the bill as soon as it comes in. You can usually do this online, but if not, it’s just a matter of writing a check, putting it in an envelope, and writing out an address — two minutes. 【小题5】 If you let the bill paying get pushed back, it becomes a terrible thing.
That’s all you need to know. If you save when you’re in college, avoid debt, and pay bills on time, you’re golden.
A.Spend less than you earn.
B.List your income, then list your bills.
C.So spend less, work less, worry less, be happier.
D.Find ways to get things done you need to get done.
