My name is Cherry Carl, and I retired in June, 2003, after 35 years as a teacher and Language Arts Specialist in Santee, California.  However, I continued my role as an instructor at the University of California, San Diego, in the Reading Specialist Certification Program until June, 2009.
I wasn't ready to retire. Teaching is in my blood! (My mother always reminded me that when I was little, I dragged the neighborhood kids in to play school whether they wanted to or not!) I still have the strong desire to make a difference for teachers, parents, and students. I'm passionate about the joy of knowing how to read and write and want every child to have the experience of closing a book with a sigh, "Wow, that was a good book!" The only way they can do that is by having the necessary skills and strategies to become independent readers. This website has been created to provide resources and materials for classroom teachers, reading and resource specialists, speech therapists, parents and students in the area of language arts. Please feel free to download and print anything that catches your eye, but please make sure to leave my name on the poetry and worksheets!
If you have specific needs or suggestions, please don't hesitate to a   sk. I'm always open to new ideas and requests. That's how the site continues to grow. You can email me at carl1404@msn.com.
Thank you so much for your heartfelt messages and testimonials. You and your children are the reason that I maintain the site and I will continue to offer the materials with little or no fees.

Did you get a flu shot this year? For the first time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US is recommending that all children aged from 6 months to 18 years receive the flu vaccine.
Vaccines battle diseases caused by bacteria and viruses.A weakened form of the germ (病菌) is introduced into the body. The body makes special substances called antibodies (抗体) to fight the germs. If the actual germs were to attack, the antibodies would fight.Because there are many kinds of flu viruses, scientists must create a new vaccine formula (处方) each year.Researchers must make a prediction.
It is like forecasting the weather.Sometimes they are right on,and sometimes they are off.But even when the vaccine does not closely match circulating flu types,it can make the illness less serious.
“The flu vaccine is not as effective as the polio (小儿麻痹症) vaccine or the measles vaccine,” says Dr.William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.“It’s not a great vaccine, but it is in fact quite a good vaccine.”
But a flu vaccine doesn’t work for everyone. There are certain people who should be careful about taking it,because the vaccine is produced in eggs. Those who are allergic (过敏的) to eggs should not take it.If you have a fever, you should wait until you recover.
Some people are afraid that they might get the flu from the flu shot.Scientists say that it is not possible, because the viruses in the flu shot are inactivated. But some minor side effects such as lowgrade fever and body ache could occur. If they do,they begin soon after the shot and usually last only one to two days.
Did you know?Smallpox was the first disease people tried to prevent by putting a virus into a healthy person. In 1796,English scientist Edward Jenner placed some infected material under a boy’s skin.
小题1:The underlined word “vaccine” (in Para.1) refers to________.
A.virus used for fighting against disease

A.is as effective as the polio and the measles vaccines
B.is worse, compared with the polio and the measles vaccines
C.does help to make illness less serious
D.is quite good because it works for everyone
小题3:We can infer from the passage that________.
A.those who are not allergic to eggs can take the flu vaccine
B.not all the flu vaccines are effective for everyone
C.you should go to a doctor if you have a fever after taking the flu vaccine

Humans might be the most highly-evolved species on the planet, but most animals possess skills we can only dream of having. Imagine how much electricity we could save if we could see in the dark the way cats do. Imagine leaping from tree to tree like a monkey. Giraffes, which are otherwise calm and good-natured, sleep only 4.6 hours a day.
We realized a long, long time ago that nature provides the best blueprint for invention. We’ve borrowed canals from beavers and reflectors from cat’s eyes. Although the words “bionics”(仿生学) became popular only after the 1960s, history shows that nature has always provided ideas on solving everyday problems. Our archives(档案) don’t go back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci and his bird-like flying machines, but we can take you to the late 19th century, where we applied those same principles for building our first practical airplanes.
To prepare for their flight at Kitty Hawk, the Wright brothers studied the movements of pigeons to figure out how they stayed high up when they were heavier than air. Their success inspired scores of successors to improve on the airplane by studying various aspects of nature. One of Orville Wright’s pupils caught and stuffed seagulls to examine their wingspan. Meanwhile, two French inventors examined spinning sycamore(梧桐) seeds in an effort to apply those same motions, reversed, to a helicopter .
Some examples are more obvious than others. The outside of the airplane designed by the Wright brothers looks like a minimalistic(简单抽象艺术) structure. On the other hand, Barney Connett’s fish submarine actually looks like a fish.
Some bio-inspired concepts have yet to be invented. In the 1960s, the US Army commissioned several university professors to conduct research on the motor skills animals in hope of applying those same abilities to tanks. Tanks that run like horses or jump like grasshoppers(蚂蚱)-sounds shocking, doesn’t it? But imagine how life would change if we could achieve that.
小题1:“Cats”, “monkeys” and “giraffes” mentioned in paragraph 1 are examples to show______.
A.they are highly-evolved species as humans
B.animals have skills that humans do not possess
C.humans can learn animals’ skills
D.they are skillful in different ways
小题2:What happened after the Wright brothers’ success?
A.People carried out a systematic study on pigeons.
B.People studied more animals and plants to develop the airplane.
C.People could fly their airplane for fun.
D.People kept their airplane at a French gallery.
小题3:Which of the following is true about the research carried out by the US Army?
A.It has cost a large sum of money.
B.It has changed our life.
C.It has improved the abilities of tanks
D.It has not succeeded yet.
小题4:What does the writer want to tell in the passage?
A.many inventions get ideas from nature.
B.Some animals possess unique skills.
C.People should protect nature.
D.Bionics is far from perfect

If your dog looks pleased to see you – it is probably because it loves the particular way you smell.
The odour of a familiar human apparently lingers like perfume in the animal’s brain – where it triggers an instinctive emotional response, research published yesterday reveals.
Our scent acts on a part of the canine brain associated with reward and the strongest reactions are produced by humans that pets know best, say scientists in America.
Gregory Berns, of Emory University in Atlanta, said: ‘While we might expect that dogs should be highly tuned to the smell of other dogs, it seems that the “reward response” is reserved for their humans.
'When humans smell the perfume or cologne of someone they love, they may have an immediate, emotional reaction that's not necessarily cognitive.
'Our experiment may be showing the same process in dogs. But since dogs are so much more olfactory(嗅觉的) than humans, their responses would likely be even more powerful than the ones we might have.
'It's one thing when you come home and your dog sees you and jumps on you and licks you and knows that good things are about to happen.
'In our experiment, however, the scent donors were not physically present.
Why do animals avoid pylons? Because they emit terrifying flashes of light that are INVISIBLE to humans.
Dolphins use sponges to protect their sensitive noses while foraging for food on the sea floor
'That means the canine brain responses were being triggered by something distant in space and time. It shows that dogs' brains have these mental representations of us that persist when we're not there.'
The university’s experiment - the first of its type - involved 12 dogs of various breeds who underwent brain scans while five different scents were placed in front of them.
The scent samples came from the subject itself, a dog the subject had never met, a dog that lived in the subject's household, a human the dog had never met, and a human that lived in the subject's household.
The familiar human scent samples were taken from someone else from the house other than the handlers during the experiment, so that none of the scent donors were physically present.
The results showed that all five scents elicited a similar response in parts of the dogs' brains involved in detecting smells. Responses were significantly stronger for the scents of familiar humans, followed by that of familiar dogs.
The findings, which were published in the journal Behavioural Processes, showed that dogs reacted strongest to the scent of a familiar human even when they were not there.
Pets trained as help or therapy dogs showed greater brain activity than the other dogs in the test.
Researchers say the findings could improve the way animals who assist wounded veterans or disabled people are selected.
小题1:Why does your dog look pleased to see you ?
A.because your dog wants to play with you
B.because your dog is hungry
C.because your dog wants to attract your attention

B.To learn how to get along well with dogs
C.To know how to tell the difference between dogs
D.To improve the way animals who assist wounded veterans or disabled people are selected.
小题3:According to the passage, a dog will be most interested in____.
A.familiar dogs
B.a human the dog had never met
C.a dog the dog had never met
D.familiar humans
小题4:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.The dog’s olfactory responses would likely be even more powerful than the ones we might have.
B.In our experiment, the scent donors were physically present.

There can be little doubt that         classes can help the gifted children to graduate earlier and take their place in life sooner. However, to take these         out of the regular classes may create serious problems.
Many are concerned that gifted children become         and lose interest in learning. However this concern is more often from parents and teachers than from students, and some of these         simply conclude that special classes should be set up for those who are talented. Some top students do feel bored in class, but why they         so goes far beyond the work they have in school. Studies have shown that to be bored is to be anxious. Global warming happens when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This is like when heat is trapped in a car. On a hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth .The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it can’t get out As a result, the temperature rises.
Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us. The greenhouse effect makes the earth appropriate for people to live on Without it,the earth would be freezing,or it would be burning hot. It would be freezing at night because we would not get the sun’s heat and light .During the day, especially during the summer, it would be burning because the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter(过滤)it,so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat.
Although the greenhouse effect makes the earth able to have people living on it,if there gets to be too many gases, the each can get unusually warmer, and many plants, animals.and people will die. Plants would die because they would not be able to take the heat .This would cause us to have less food to eat, and it would also limit the food that animals have. With less food for the animals that we need to survive we would even have less food. Gradually, people, plants, and animals would all die of hunger.
People are doing many things to try to stop global warming .One thing is carpooling—driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. Another thing is being more careful about leaving electrical devices turned on. Now, more people are even riding buses or bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air .Although adults do many things to help stop global warming, kids call do just as much.

小题3:What is the effect of atmosphere?
A.IT only traps the heat of the sun.
B.It does great harm to humans.
C.It makes the earth neither to hot nor too cold.
D.It prevents all the light from the sun shining on the earth.
小题4:What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.lf there is greenhouse effect.all the plants will die
B.Human beings are likely to disappear from the earth
C.Crops can ′t take in the heat lf there is greenhouse effect
D.Although greenhouse effect is necessary.Too much of it will cause us to die.
小题5:What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.What kids can do to help stop global warming.

When you consider what subject to study in college, chances are that you and your parents will think about what you can make out of it after graduation. You will likely ask the question: “Can I find a well-paid job or simply a job with a degree in this in the future?”
This consideration also influences students when they come to choose between studying science or humanities (人文学科) at college. People generally believe that the humanities, which include literature ,  history, cultural studies and philosophy,  do not prepare students for a specific vocation (职业). Science subjects, however, are considered vocational courses that produce scientists, engineers and economists (经济学家).
“I've decided to take finance as my college major. My parents and I think this subject will help me get a good job or start a business,” said Huachen Yueru, 17, a science student at Wuxi No. 1 High School.
Even those who choose a liberal arts (文科) education often pick the humanities subject which they think will best help them later find a job.
“I'm going to study Spanish in college, which I believe will open doors to a high-paying job for me,” said Liu Chao, 18, a Senior 2 student at Dalian No 20 High School. He said few of his classmates show interest in subjects like philosophy and history, which are seen as “less promising” in job markets.
The popularity of liberal arts subjects among college students has also been decreasing in the United States. American scholars (学者) and universities are concerned that in the ongoing economic crisis (经济危机) liberal arts subjects will be hit hardest. As money tightens (紧缩), they worry that the humanities may become “a great luxury (奢侈品) that many cannot afford”, according to the New York Times.

A.Because they are not interested in them.
B.Because they think these subjects are useless.
C.Because they see these subjects as less-promising in job market.
D.Because they like the science subjects.
小题3: What can we infer from the passage ?
A.Humanities are becoming less and less popular with the students.
B.Studying science subjects is sure to find a well-paid job.
C.The humanities in college should be cancelled.
D.The writer thinks those who choose the liberal arts education will choose their favorite subjects.

If your preschoolers turn up their noses at carrots or celery, a small reward like a sticker(贴画) for taking even a taste may help get them to eat previously disliked foods, a UK study said.
Though it might seem obvious that a reward could encourage young children to eat their vegetables, the idea is actually controversial, researchers wrote in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. That’s because some studies have shown that rewards can backfire and cause children to lose interest in foods they already liked, said Jane Wardle, a researcher at University College London who worked on the study. Verbal praise, such as “Brilliant! You’re a great vegetable taster”, did not work as well.
The study found that when parents gave their small children a sticker each time they took a “tiny taste” of a disliked vegetable, it gradually changed their attitudes. The children were also willing to eat more of the vegetables—either carrots, celery, cucumber, red pepper, cabbage or sugar snap peas—in laboratory taste tests, the study said.
Researchers randomly assigned (分派) 173 families to one of these groups. In one, parents used stickers to reward their children each time they took a tiny sample of a disliked vegetable. A second group of parents used verbal praise. The third group, where Parents used no special vegetable-promoting methods, served as a “control”.
Parents in the reward groups offered their children a taste of the “target” vegetable every day for 12 days. Soon after, children in the sticker group were giving higher ratings to the vegetables—and were willing to eat more in the research lab, going from an average of 5 grams at the start to about 10 grams after the 12-day experience. The turnaround(转机) also seemed to last, with preschoolers in the sticker group still willing to eat more of the once-disliked vegetable three months later.
Why didn’t the verbal praise work? Wardle said the parents’ words may have seemed “insincere” to their children.
小题1:The purpose of writing the passage is      .
A.to show the procedure of an experiment on children’s diet
B.to introduce a practical method of making children eat vegetables
C.to explain why children hate to eat vegetables
D.to present a proper way of verbal praise to parents
小题2:The underlined word “backfire” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.
A.shoot from behind the back
B.make a fire in the backyard
C.produce an unexpected result
D.achieve what was planned
小题3:Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Most children are born to dislike carrots or celery.
B.Children in the sticker group will never lose interest in eating vegetables.
C.Oral praise works quite well in encouraging children to eat vegetables.
D.It remains a question whether rewarding is a good way to get children to eat vegetables.
小题4:What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Children like rewards, not verbal praise.
B.Parents should give up verbal praise.
C.Children are difficult to inspire.
D.Parents should praise their children in a sincere tone.
