I was six when I joined my father and two elder brothers at sunrise in the fields of Eufaula. Okla.  36  the time I was eight I was helping Dad fix up old furniture. He gave me a cent for every nail I  37  out of old boards.
I got my first  38  job, at JM’s Restaurant in town, when I was 12. My main responsibilities (职责) were  39  tables and washing dishes,  40  sometimes I helped cook.
Every day after school I would  41  to JM’s and work until ten. Even on Saturdays I  42  from two until eleven. At that age it was difficult going to work and  43  my friends run off to swim or play. I didn’t necessarily like work, but I loved what working

Word that I was trustworthy and hard-working  47  around town. A local clothing store offered me credit (赊帐)  48  I was only in seventh grade. I immediately  49  a $68 sports coat and a $22 pair of shoes. I was  50  only 65 cents an hour, and I already owed(欠) the storekeeper $90! So I learned  51  the danger of easy credit. I paid it  52  as soon as I could.
My first job taught me self-control, responsibility and brought me a  53  of personal satisfaction few of my friends had experienced. As my father,  54  worked three jobs, once told me, “If you  55  sacrifice (奉献) and responsibility, there are not many things in life you can’t have.”How right he was.

help sb.(to) do sth帮助某人做;have sb. do sth叫/派/让某人做;watch sb. do sth注视/监视某人做;let sb. do sth让某人做.

Motorists over the age of 75 face compulsory tests of their eyesight and ability to drive under proposals being considered by ministers.
The biggest overhaul of motoring law in a generation could also lead to all drivers having to give assurances(保证)of their fitness to get behind the wheel every 10 years.
Other changes under consideration include issuing(发放)daylight driving licenses for motorists with night blindness, together with stricter checks on all drivers whose medical condition brought a threat to other road users.
It is understood that the proposals will be part of a review of the law governing the medical fitness of drivers that will be announced publicly by the summer.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is dealing with a rising number of motorists who are concerned that they have conditions---from failing eyesight to epilepsy---that could affect their driving.
In 2006, the DVLA dealt with 600,000 motorists whose physical ability to drive needed to be recertified(重新认证), a 20 per cent rise on the previous year. With an ageing population, the biggest challenge is dealing with the rising number of elderly motorists. By 2021, there will be an estimated three million drivers over the age of 70 on Britain’s roads.
Drivers must renew their licenses at the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The applicant is legally required to tell the DVLA of any conditions that could weaken their ability behind the wheel.
Ministers have ruled out a compulsory maximum age for driving but will instead rely on tightening up the checks on motorists over the age of 75. The most likely option would be tests to ensure motorists were fit to drive. They would include an eyesight test and a cognitive(认知) test that would prove a driver's ability to react to road signs, driving conditions, pedestrians and vehicles.
However, checks are likely to be tightened at all ages. The strictest controls are expected to be imposed(强制) on motorists of any age who have had a heart attack or stroke. They could have to produce a doctor's approval to resume(重新得到)driving. Anyone making a false declaration would be guilty of a criminal offence.

Uganda is a country in East Africa and,as in many such countries,a high percentage of the population, about 80 percent, are village-dwellers living in huts, which are often no bigger than a garage. The walls of the huts are made of mud, which is held together by reeds and sticks, and the roofs of the older ones are thatched(覆盖)with grass, although an increasing number of newer village houses have roofs made from corrugated(波纹形的)iron.
Several generations of the same family live together in the huts, which are usually divided into two sections by a curtain. The inner section, the one furthest from the open door of the hut,is where everyone sleeps and food is prepared and served in the outer part. If the family owns chickens or goats, they are kept in a small room attached to the main house.
Food is usually prepared on open fires although some people prefer to cook inside. However, this is quite dangerous and also means that the walls of the hut are stained by smoke and the atmosphere is acrid. The family sit in a circle on mats while they eat.
Newer village houses are almost always made of corrugated iron and are bigger, with one or two separate bedrooms and the kitchen in a smaller building beside the main house. But,old or new,the houses are not powered by electricity, and all homes are lit by paraffin(石蜡)candles called “tadobba”.
Nor is there any running water in the houses. Some villages have their own well, but in many cases, collecting water involves a long and arduous walk to a river or spring, carrying plastic containers or pots made of clay.
Children are the ones who have to fetch water, and they have to do this early in the morning before they go to school,or in the evening when they come home. They often have to climb high hills or walk through valleys with narrow paths through dense vegetation. It is no surprise that they grow up muscular and fit after such daily exercise, walking for several kilometres carrying such heavy weights.
