The husband’s totally  46   reaction was positive. Their son could never be  47   back to life,so there was no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, this would not have happened   48  he had taken the time to put the bottle away.

Sometimes we spend time asking who is   51  , only to miss the opportunity to enjoy the  52   in human relationships we could receive by giving each other support. Why don’t we  53   someone we love for the “mistake” they didn’t make on purpose?

B
I am a person who does not like to wait in line. However, I realize anger will get me nowhere. Considering this, I have decided to turn my frustration(沮丧) to productive ends. In short, I am constantly hunting around for what I call “waiting in line books”, especially those that are designed for being read in snippets(文摘), so there is no extended story line to lose track of. Another requirement is that they be small enough to slip neatly into my back pocket.
The other day I went to the supermarket and was surprised to see that the place was crowded with shoppers, but no worries. I parked my cart behind five others and pulled out my vocabulary builder. Within a few seconds I was totally absorbed, and rather than seething at the 15 minutes it took to advance to the cashier, I learned that nankeen is “a yellow cotton cloth”, or, in the plural, “trousers made of it”. The acquisition of new words led me into a place where I would otherwise not have enjoyed myself so much.
Once, at a yard sale, I found two small pocket books titled Sidelights on American History (copyright 1919). The seller approached as I looked through the pages. “You want them?”
“First I need to see if they fit,” I told him. He watched as I slipped Volume 1 into my back pocket. “Perfect. I’ll take them.”
10 minutes later, I was at the carwash, where the waiting line was six vehicles long. Thank goodness for my books! By the time my car was being soaped and power sprayed, I had learned about the Annapolis Convention, the early life of Aaron Bur.
The more the world demands that I wait, the more I learn from my waiting library. In fact, I have become so fond of my “waiting” books that my spirits actually rise when I see a long line I must stand in. It is most likely I would be regarded as a bookish, lonely soul. But little would they realize that I was enjoying the company of those “waiting” books. And just as Disraeli said, “Everything comes if a man will only wait”.
60. When buying a book the writer _____.
A. has his own rules                        B. prefers books of small size
C. chooses books by famous writers            D. has no particular appetite
61. The truth behind the story is that the writer wants to tell us _____.
A. reading is not only important but also practical
B. one is expected to learn to adjust oneself rather than complain
C. reading is the best way to kill time
D. knowledge is power and wisdom is fortune
62. The underlined expression in paragraph 3 “seething at” probably means _____.
A. angry at                   B. delighted at              C. surprised at        D. excited at
63. The sentence in Paragraph 2 “there is no extended story line to lose track of” shows that _____.
A. what the writer reads is not difficult to understand
B. the writer likes to read interesting stories while waiting in line
C. the writer can stop wherever needed with no plot to leave out
D. the writer does not necessarily reach his understanding

She leaped up, opened the door and began to cough. She ignored the flames that lit up the apartment as she raced across the small hall to her own bedroom, where a window was already open, "Help!" she cried into the dark. But it was 3:30 in the morning and nobody was around to hear. She was on her own.
Later, she'd say she thought of nothing at all.It was female's instinct (本能)that helped her uncover a supermum strength she never knew she had.She had no choice; her children would surely have died had they waited in their own bedroom for rescue. She ran back through the flames for her children, first lifting Sami, still half asleep, into her arms and carrying him to the open window in her room and dropping him to the ground from the second floor. Then, she turned back for Majda.
By then, a neighbour had called 9-1-1.Looking out of the window, Akif knew that jumping would be her only chance of survival. She also knew if she didn't, the very reason her family had moved out from Morocco five years earlier—— to make a better life and give the children opportunities they wouldn't have had back home ——would be for nothing. But why couldn't she move her left leg? She didn't know that her polyester pants had caught fire and melted into her body. All she knew was that she had to get out of the apartment.

第三部分 阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文。从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中。选出最佳选项.并在答题卷上将该项填出。
A
My wife passed away a few years ago, and I went through the worst time in my life. I even wanted to kill myself. Just for my kids, I had to continue to live and work as a small town doctor at my medical clinic in Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. Then they asked me to have a family trip.
On our trip, we turned on the TV at the motel and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Seeing it falling down, I said to my kids: "I'm going to Afghanistan". And a few weeks later, International Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in provinces where people had no health care. In these field clinics surrounded by frightening shoots or deadly bombs, we were eventually serving 27,000 patients a month in a very busy schedule. Tired and nervous, I gradually had a sense of achievement, a sense of purpose, and my depression went away.
In the years to follow, I went to Indonesia after the tsunami (海啸), Pakistan after the earthquakes, Sudan after the civil war, and Iraq after more and more bombs. Each time after disasters one after another, hundreds of people were killed, wounded and many more had to flee. We once set up movable clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees, and it was supposed to hold 13,000 originally. Flu broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and food were also serious problems. "Adventures or not?", I often asked myself.
When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But in reality, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, she went unconscious. I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit and the exciting adventures we would have.
I think about the moment many times during my "adventures". I didn't know how predictive those words would be. But I know that she is still with me.
56. Where has the doctor been in the past few years?
A. Some countries where he could set up clinics.
B. Some African countries where flu broke out.
C. The places where the earthquakes happened.
D. The places that the horrible disasters struck.
57. How would the doctor describe his life after he had worked in Afghanistan?
A. Tired and troublesome.           B. Busy and risky.
C. Meaningful and helpful.          D. Frightening and depressing.
The underlined word "refugees" means people__________
A. who are robbed, killed, or wounded    B. who suffer from flu in movable clinics
C. who like to take adventures          D. who have lost homes because of disasters
59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The doctor's wife encouraged him to work in foreign countries.
B. What the doctor said to his wife before her death became reality.
C. The doctor's adventures made him understand the love of his wife.
D. With the true love of his wife; the doctor started to change his life.
