Dear Mayor,

¡¡¡¡I am a student of No£®1 Middle School£®Here I have something to tell you£®Our school stands near some main streets, and many students as well as teachers have to cross the streets before they enter the school gate£®In rush hours there are so many cars, buses and trucks going back and forth that we have to thread our way through the moving cars and buses£®In order to make sure that their children are safe, some parents send their children to school with motorcycles or even private cars every day, which makes the busy streets more crowded£®

¡¡¡¡I think the government should do something to improve the situation£®Maybe an overpass can be built over the road to prevent the traffic accidents from happening£®

¡¡¡¡I am looking forward to your reply£®

Yours,

Li Hua

Most high schools begin their day around 7:00 a.m., which leaves many teenagers nodding off in the morning. In fact, at least 20 percent of high school students fall asleep in class on a typical day. The problem: Teenagers need a lot of sleep£about nine hours each night, experts say. And most of them aren¡¯t getting enough.
To help sleepy teens, some school districts of USA have tried delaying the opening of the high school day. The Minneapolis school district, for example, changed its start time from 7:20 to 8:40 a.m., giving its 12,000 high schoolers an extra hour and twenty minutes each morning.
Researches show that students in schools of these districts benefit a lot from the change. Students reported less depression when there was a later starting time. And teachers reported that students were more alert and ready for learning. Parents reported that their children were easier to live with because their emotions were more regulated.
Teachers especially wanted a change because they were concerned about student attendance and student readiness to learn that first period of the day. The change resulted in better attendance and less student sleeping in class that first hour.

Dear editor,

Recently, I was chosen as one of the two students by our school to compete in an English-speaking contest. I felt very excited and happy because I was given a precious chance to win honor for my school and to prove myself. In order to make sure that I could achieve the best in the competition, for almost two months, I had devoted myself to the preparation for the contest. With so much preparation, I was pretty confident that I would win! However, I was beaten by one of my school¡¯s ¡°weak¡± rivals (¾ºÕùÕß). When the result was announced, I could hardly believe my ears. Upset and disappointed, I burst into tears at that time. I felt as though I let my teachers down and even harmed our school¡¯s reputation (ÃûÓþ).I even felt that all my classmates were laughing at me behind my back . It seemed that my whole world had turned grey because of this failure .What can I do?
