At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the Americanfamily was falling apart.A century later, we know that this was not the case. However, although the family is still alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different100 years ago.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in theUnited States: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includesgrandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear familyconsists of only parents and children.
Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in “traditional” families, that is, a stay-home mother, a working father, and their own biologicalchildren. Others live in two-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster, families, blended families (where men and women who were married before marry againand combine the children from previous marriages into the new families),childlessfamilies, and so on.
What caused the structure of the family to change? In the early 1900s the birthratebegan to fall and the divorce rate began to rise. Women were suddenly choosing to go tocollege and take jobs outside the home. In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced seriousfinancial, or money problems during the Great Depression, when many people lost theirjobs. During World War II(1939-1945),5 million women were left alone to take care oftheir homes and their children. Because many men were at war, thousands of these "war widows" had to go to work outside their home.
During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, andpeople married at a younger age and had more children than the previous generation. It wasunusual for a mother to work outside the home during the years when her children weregrowing tip. Families began leaving cities and moving into single-family homes in thesuburbs. The traditional family seemed to be returning.
In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in thestructure of the family. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, the divorce rate doubled andthe birthrate fell by half. The number of single-parent families tripled, and the number ofcouples living together without being married doubled again. In fact, the single-parenthousehold, once unusual, has replaced the "traditional" family as the typical family in theStates. If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in thetwenty-first century.

根据第二段第一行there were mainly two types of families。
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in theUnited States: the extended and the nuclear.
Today there are many different kinds of families说明现在的家庭类型比以前要多得多,本句后面还有than,说明这里使用many的比较级more。

In the early 1900s the birthratebegan to fall and the divorce rate began to rise.
根据最后一段1,2行there were many important changes in thestructure of the family说明发生了重大的变化,很多家庭模式出现了。
If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in thetwenty-first century.

A.The secret of the writer’s success
B.A writer with enduring popularity
C.Well-received creation to encourage Brits
D.The insight into human nature
E. Writing styles in different stages
F. The story appreciate for school students
1. ____________
Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of England’s great writers. Yet for many his language is old-fashioned and his story plots often improbable. Why, Dickens, out of so many other great English writers, has made the list? How then to explain Dickens’s enduring popularity?
2. _____________
One reason undoubtly is the British government’s insistence that every child studies a Dickens novel at school. Alongside Willian Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a compulsory (必读的)writer on every English literature school reading list. His stories, though often over-long by today’s standard, are superbly written moral tales. They are filled with colorful characters.
3. ______________
But what makes his books stand out from other English writers is his insight into human nature. Dickens, like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior that are as true to citizens of the 21st century as they were to his readers in the 19th century. Readers have returned to Dickens’s books again and again over the years to see what he has to say about readers’ own time.
4. _______________
The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television drama that introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and money, it was the perfect story to illustrate the bad times. No surprise then that it was Dickens Britons turned to, during the economic crisis last year, to make sense of world rapidly falling apart.
5. _______________
Readers of the 19th and early 20th century usually prized Dickens’s earlier novels for their humor and pathos(悲痛). While recognizing the virtues of these books, critics today tend to rank more highly the later works because of  their formal coherence and acute perception(洞察力) of the human condition. For as long as Dickens’s novels have something to say to modern audiences, it seems likely that he will remain one of Britain’s best loved writers.

I'm a middle school student name Li Ming.I'm writing to tell you something. Recently I have noticed many of my classmates often go to the cyber cafe near our school.I went there too in the other day.I was surprising to see many students playing computer games, watching films or chat. Some students are even talking about love affairs online. On my opinion, the cyber cafe should be a place which we can find much useful informations. The Internet should be a window to the outside world rather than place for games. The Internet is good if we make good use of them.Otherwise, it will do us great harm.So the local government should take measures to make sure that students use cyber cafes positively.
