The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew Imust  45___it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and  46 , “Just what I need.”But instead of placing the flower in my hand, he  47 it mid-air without reason. It was then that I  48
for the very first time the boy was  49 .
I heard my voice shake, tears shone like the sun  50 I thanked him for picking the very best one. He smiled, and then ran off to play,  51 of the effect he’d had on my day.
I sat there and  52 how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged(放纵的)  53 ? Perhaps from his heart, he’d been blessed with true  54 .

The day was warm and the sun shone down like a new beginning on my life. I was waving goodbye to my son, the last one of my fledglings (刚会飞的鸟)to leave home and go to new woods, "University actually" . I felt so lighthearted after spending many years looking after my four children—cooking, washing, ironing, teaching them how to look after themselves and manage their finances—that I actually thought “At long last, freedom".
But, as I watched my last one leave, although it was a joyous occasion, I realized I had not really prepared for this day, I was too tied up with bringing up these adults of the future to realize that they would all leave the nest and lives independently.
At first I didn't know what "I" wanted to do. I tried a part time job, which ended in me running out in tears. I started a business making soft furnishings, but that didn't work either.  I grew my own veggies and fruit, which lasted 3 years, until I was advised by my doctor that my feet couldn't take any more "tools” driven through them.
I began wondering if I had a future of my own. I cried for the life I was used to, and hadn't known or wanted anything different.
Then one day I saw an ad. for foster parents, I discussed it with my husband who was always behind everything I tried and with great disturbance , I rang up the number.
I now laugh and sing with my 14-year-old foster daughter, even when my cooker is a mess and my bathroom is a disaster area. I now know, 8 years later, what “I” was meant to be doing with all the spare hours, days, and weeks I had on my hands when my last fledgling flew the nest. The sun shines once again in my home.

Just then, I saw a young fellow about 30 walking away with it, opening it and drawing out the valuables. “Stop thief! Stop thief!” I shouted and threw open the car door and rushed out to him, followed by the driver and half a dozen passers-by. Very soon the thief was cornered at the turn of the road. One day while shopping in a small town in southern California,it was my misfortune to be approached by a clerk whose personality conflicted with mine. He seemed most unfriendly and not at all concerned about my intended purchase. I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store. My hostility(敌意) toward that clerk increased with each step.
On the outside, standing by the road, was a darkskinned young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beautiful, dazzling smile covered his face. I gave way immediately. The magnetic(磁力的) power of that smile dissolved all bitterness within me,and I found the muscles in my own face happily responding(回应).
“Beautiful day,isn't it?”I remarked,in passing. Then,I turned back.“I really owe you a debt of gratitude,”I said softly.
His smile deepened, but he made no attempt to answer.A Mexican woman and two men were standing nearby. The woman stepped forward and volunteered, "Sir, but he doesn't speak English.Do you want me to tell him something?" In that moment I felt transformed(改变).The young man's smile had made a big person of me.My friendliness and good will toward all mankind stood ten feet tall.
"Thank you?" The woman seemed slightly puzzled.
I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave."Just tell him that," I insisted."He'll understand.I am sure !"
Oh, what a smile can do! Although I have never seen that young man again, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I became smile-conscious, and I practice the art anywhere and everywhere, with everybody.
