In today`s Ireland答案解析

科目:gzyy 来源: 题型:阅读理解

In today's Ireland, it seems hard to imagine the grim days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved, or that, in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato. Nowadays, it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.

Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland. Until recently there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel. Patterns of diet were old-styled, based firmly on 'meat and two vegetables' (somewhat overcooked), potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. Now things are very different. Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast-food are met, as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas - a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced whole foods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before), and a vast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centers. Food 'events' such as Kinsale's Gourmet festival or Galway's Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.

Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细), it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality. Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood. One of its great specialties is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal. Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜)and potato dishes.

One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast. A 'traditional Irish breakfast' is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads. Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted with a full breakfast included, so you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money's worth!

71 What was Irish food like until quite recently?

A. It was very conservative and uninteresting.

B. It was influenced by French cooking.

C. It was very unhealthy.

D. It was plentiful

72  How has Irish food improved in recent years?

A. There are more French restaurants.   B. Food produce is fresher.

C. There is more kinds.                     D. Food is more expensive

73.What is the main reason for this improvement?

A. People have more money to spend.    B. The development of tourism.

C. People have more tastes today.       D. Young people dislike traditional food

74. How does the passage describe Irish cooking today?

A. It is exciting and interesting.    B. It is boring and overcooked.

In today’s world, over 7,000 different languages are spoken. English is one of the most recognized languages in the world and is the language of choice for many people across the globe. For this reason it plays a significant role in communication between different societies and organizations. It is important that global workers can effectively use this style of English in order to be successful in the world business markets.

Global English, also known as international English, is the movement towards using an international standard for this common language. It is also the concept of using the English language to communicate across the world and in various dialects. In today’s society of constant communication among people around the world, it is important that the English language is not tied to one local dialect such as the United States, the UK or Australia, but rather represents a broad usage of language so that it can be understood in all countries. When using global English, it is important to write and speak clearly so it can be understood around the world.

There are a variety of techniques that can be adopted to successfully use global English. Avoid sentences and paragraphs which are long and wordy. Try not to use false subjects, such as sentences that start with “It is” or “This has” which can be confusing. Instead, start the sentence with a specific descriptive subject.

Do not use mini word clusters (串) because they may confuse anyone who is just learning the English languages. Mini words are short, common words with one-to-three letters. Avoid using idioms, such as “the tip of the iceberg” and “right around the corner”. Instead, say exactly what you mean. Also, because many languages do not use pronouns such as “it” or “they”, try to avoid them. Avoid using phrasal verbs, such as “keep up” or “get into” because they aren’t easy to understand in some languages. Finally, since most languages have different formats for writing dates, it is best to write out the month, date and year completely.

In a word, it is important to read and write global English. By understanding the concepts of global English and using proper techniques, a business can successfully grow in the global business economy.

Have you heard of the movie Benji off the Leashf This Benji story7 begins when his mother, a pretty black furry dog, escapes from the puppy mill with Colby, a boy who loves her.He tries to hide her in an abandoned house. The boy' s father discovers her there and takes mother and pups back home to the puppy mill, but leaves Benji behind because he doesn't look purebred (纯血统的) enough to be sold for money.Colby comes back later to rescue the tiny puppy and keeps Benji in his wooden clubhouse, bringing Mom to come to visit him in secret.
As Benji grows bigger, it becomes harder to keep him in the clubhouse, and eventually the boy' s father discovers him and Benji is forced to flee to the streets. But despite his fear of Colby' s father, Benji cannot forget about his mother, who is growing steadily weaker and sicker. He continues to sneak back to the puppy mill yard to spy on the goings-on there and plan a way to rescue her.
Benji's doggie pal, Scrappy enters the story when he is pushed out of a car into a country lane.Once his paws hit the ground, Scrappy wags his tail once helplessly after the car as it drives away, and then is immediately up to his neck in hapless mischief (顽皮). Scrappy is a lovably stupid little dog who barely manages to escape the animal control officers who are determined to catch him.
One of the wonderful things about this movie is that the two stars are not highly trained purebred dogs. Both Benji and Scrappy were rescued mixed breed dogs found at local animal shelters.Adorable Benji and his stupid pal, Scrappy, demonstrate that mixed-breed rescue dogs are just as intelligent and trainable as any purebred dog.
Benji Off the Leash clearly demonstrates the connection between people who abuse animals and people who abuse people.Colby' s father takes out his anger on those who are weaker than him, namely by frightening his wife and the dogs.He attempts to frighten Colby, but the boy bravely refuses to let him.
Children who are used to fast-paced action films with catchy theme songs may not have the patience for the slower pace of this film. But for rescue volunteers, older children, and anyone who loves dogs, this is a heartwarming movie that shows how even in today' s world of deserted dogs and backyard puppy mills, there can still be happy endings for homeless dogs.

Sport not only is physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism (批评) from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive (过度的)amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to work together with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parent's and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves.
Coaches and parents, should also be careful that youth sport participation doesn't become the work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting(环境), young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches direct their attention on the outcome(=result)and find fault with young people’s performances. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates (积极强化激励) and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
74. An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is________.
  A. to reduce their mental stress                 B. to increase their sense of stress
  C. to make sports less competitive               D. to make sports more challenging
75. According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that________.
  A. it can create high levels of stress
  B. it enables them to find flaws in themselves
  C. it can provide them with valuable experiences
  D. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
76. According to the passage parents and coaches should________.
  A. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports
  B. help children to win every game
  C. train children to deaf with stress
  D. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sports
77.The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to________.
  A. teach young athletes how to avoid burnout
  B. persuade young children not to worry about criticism
  C. stress the importance of positive reinforcement to children
  D. discuss the skill of mixing criticism with encouragement

LONDON—Life for Cathy Hagner and her three children is set to permanent(永久的) fast-forward.

Their full school day and her job as a lawyer's assistant are busy enough. But Hagner also has to take the two boys to soccer or hockey or basketball while dropping off her daughter at piano lessons or Girl Scout Club.

Often, the exhausted family doesn't get home until 7 pm. There is just time for a quick supper before homework. In today's world, middle-class American and British parents treat their children as if they are competitors racing for some finishing line.

Parents take their children from activity to activity in order to make their future bright. It seems that raising a genius has become a more important goal than raising a happy and well-balanced child.

"Doctors across the country are reporting a growing number of children suffering from stomachaches and headaches due to exhaustion and stress," says child expert William Doherty of the University of Minnesota.

Teachers are dealing with exhausted kids in the classroom. It's a very serious problem. Many children attend after-school clubs by necessity. But competitive pressures also create an explosion of activities. They include sports, language, music and math classes for children as young as four.

"There is a new parenting trend under way which says that you have to tap all your child's potential at a young age; otherwise you will let him down,” says Terry Alter, a Cambridge-based child and adolescent psychiatrist (青少年精神病专家)

"It isn't entirely new: there have always been pushy parents. But what was previously seen as strange behaviour is now well accepted."

1.From the second paragraph of this passage we can find that ______.

A.Hagner wastes much time helping her children's lessons

B.Hagner doesn't spend much time on her full-time job

C.Hagner is interested in spots and music

D.Hagner busies herself by following a trend

2.British parents, as the writer described in this passage, _____.

A.treat their children as spots players

B.pay no attention to their children's lessons

C.bring up their children in a simple way

D.give their children little time to develop freely

3.The writer's opinion about after-school clubs is that ______.

A.activities in the country are too competitive

B.children should attend four clubs at a time

C.some clubs result in competitive pressures

D.clubs should have more subjects for school children

4.The last paragraph tells us that in Britain ______.

A.parents used to take their children to every club

B.parents used to be wise on how to raise children

C.parents have all benefited from children's clubs

D.parents have come to know the standard of education

.
For generations of pupils, learning key historical dates, places, and names off by heart has been the base of academic success. But for today’s youngsters, dull rote learning(死记硬背) is meaningless because such basic facts are only a mouse click via Google, Wikipedia and online libraries, according to writer Don Tapscott.
Tapscott, author of the best-selling book Wikinomics and a supporter of the “net generation”, suggests a better approach would be to teach children to think creatively so they could learn to understand and use the knowledge available online.
He said, “Teachers are no longer the fountain(源泉) of knowledge ; the Internet is. Kids should learn about history to understand the world and why things are the way they are. But they don’t need to know all the dates.”
Tapscott dismissed(摒弃) the idea that his approach is anti-learning. Instead, he argued that the ability to learn new things is more important than ever in a world where you have to process new information at lighting speed. And he believes that the old-fashioned model of education still common in today’s schools, involving having facts off pat, was designed for the industrial age. He said, “This might have been good for the mass production economy, but it isn’t suitable for the digital economy, or for the ‘net generation’ mind. Children are going to have to reinvent their knowledge base many times. So for them memorizing facts and figures is a waste of time.”
Tapscott added the brains of today’s youngsters work differently to their parents’, and that multi tasking with digital equipment, such as using the Internet while listening to their MP3 players, can help them to develop critical thinking skills.
Schools are increasingly introducing more independent study and activities, with pupils learning at their own pace and focusing on what interests them most.
68. What is important for the “net generation” in Tapscott’s opinion?
A. Using online knowledge creatively.
B. Memorizing facts and figures.
C. Learning to respect teachers.
D. Teaching their parents to think creatively.
69. The underlined part “having facts off pat” in Para. 4 probably means _______.
A. understanding online information
B. remembering facts clearly
C. mastering digital equipment
D. keeping mistakes in mind
70. According to Tapscott, _______.
A. learning history is of no use to kids
B. Teachers should learn more things from online libraries
C. Kids should not listen to MP3 players while using the Internet
D. to obtain new information is important for kids

Many people often say there is more stress in today's society than in years past. In fact, these people are comparing our lives with that of the cave man, who didn't have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. They forget that the cave man worried about being eaten by a hear while he was asleep, or about dying of hunger--things that few people worry much about today.
Actually stress is a normal state of affairs, and it's important that people understand what they are talking about when they speak about stress. Whenever anyone experiences something unpleasant, for lack of a better word they say they are under stress. Yet there is such a thing as pleasant stress--as in the case of the Olympic winner at the moment of his glory, or a conductor as his orchestra performs particularly well. They are just sending out excitement, and they are giving off all the stress hormones exactly the same as if they were in low spirits or had just heard of a death in the family. We call the pleasant or healthy kind "eustress” and the unpleasant or unhealthy kind "distress".
Then how can people deal with stress? The secret is not to avoid it but to "do your own thing". It implies doing what you like to do and what you are made to do at your own speed. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to live and how to behave in various situations, to decide: “Do I really want to take my father's business or be a musician?” If you really want to be a musician, then be one.
64. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Modern people experiences more stress than the cave man.
B. The cave man experienced more stress than modern people.
C. People don't suffer more stress today; it's just that they think they do.
D. Modern people have the same worries as the cave man did.
65. In which of the following situations will you feel "eustress"?
A. Your favorite football team has lost an important game.
B. You have failed an important examination.
C. You are informed of an accident of your best friend.
D. You have won the first prize in an English competition.
66 The purpose of writing the passage is to let us know _________________________.
A. stress does not necessarily refer to unpleasant experience
B. distress is what people call the pleasant kind of stress
C. an Olympic winner feels the same stress as one who loses a family member
D. people will feel eustress and distress at the same time
67. According to the passage, how can people deal with stress?
A. Do things that you really want to do.    B. Do whatever you're expected to do.
C. Try to do things successfully.          D. Refuse to do whatever you're told to.

In today’s world, English is the most wildly used language. It is our duty to learn English in the new situation of the reform and opening (改革开放) to the outside world. How can we master the English language ? I’d like to give you some good advice.

First, get interested in it. I enjoy listening to foreign friends talking when I was a child. At the same time I watched the English programme Follow Me on TV. From then on, I kept on learning English. The more I learned, the more progress I made.

Second, practice makes perfect. Many people study English very hard, but they are very shy to speak it in public, for they are afraid of making mistakes. Remember you have to make a mistake before you can correct it. A native English speaker makes mistakes sometimes, too.
