| Beauty: The Korean Way "Thank goodness you have double eyelids (双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money," said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost every Caucasian (白种人) has, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans (韩国) are born with double eyelids. I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. The moment I arrived in the city, I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics (整容诊所) everywhere, along with billboards (街上大型广告牌) featuring South Korean women who had Western characteristics— |
| tall, thin, with a milky complexion (肤色), long legs, nice big eyes, and the perfectly-angled nose. I figured out that South Korean beauty meant looking as "white" or Caucasian as possible. South Korea is known to have the highest ratio (比例) of cosmetic surgeons to citizens worldwide. It is very common for girls to get eyelid surgery as high school graduation presents. What made South Koreans fall so madly in love with cosmetic surgery? Cosmetic surgery has some kind of magical appeal (吸引力) to them-the promise of beauty. Women are often convinced (深信不疑) that suffering and sacrificing (牺牲) is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. And this suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to better-looking children and a better lifestyle. This beauty ideal (期望) is not a trend (时尚), but a very real standard that is growing deeper within South Korean society. Appearance is starting to play a bigger role in the workplace to the extent that men are also resort to (求助于) cosmetic surgery. For instance, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and over six feet tall, gets many more job offers than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, even though both of them graduated from the same college and had the same GPA (平均绩点) and certificates. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty (形体美) equals happiness. 1. How many South Koreans are born with double eyelids? 2. There are cosmetic surgery clinics everywhere in Seoul, aren't there? 3. What does South Korean beauty mean? 4. When do girls usually get eyelid surgery in South Korea ? 5. Are South Koreans very fond of cosmetic surgery? 6. What do many South Koreans believe ? 7. What do you think of beauty? |

Dear Editor,
I’m confused these days. We are taught at home and at school that violence(暴力)is bad. For example ,last week, my friend and I were playing at the beach .We found a really beautiful shell. My friend picked it up ,but I saw it first ,and I said it was mine. He said ,no, it was his. I really want the shell ,and I even thought about hitting him ,that’s how angry I was.
Now should that be right? No ! I shouldn’t use violence. I should talk with my friend instead, and solve that. My parents and teachers often tell me that using violence is the least civilized(文明)way to solve problems.
So ,if adults had a disagreement ,and if they used violence toward each other in order to win, is it all right ? No!
Now ,I’m confused. When two countries disagree, they often use violence. They fight a war. Using violence is not okey at home, at school, or in your country but okey between two countries, why?
A war is extreme violence. So not only soldiers but citizens(公民), including small children and babies have been killed and injured because of wars.
Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace .But can you really “make peace” by using violence and killing so many people?
I don’t think that bombs and missiles(炸弹和导弹)can reach people’s hearts and change them. Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring ,and that’s what we need in the world. Why can’t they use their wisdom(智慧)and talk it over?
1.What happened to Joshua and his friend last week at the beach?
A.They had a fight. B.Joshua hit his friend.
C.They had a class about violence. D.They found a beautiful shell
2.How should we solve problems according to this letter?
A.We should argue about the problems
B.We should study at school.
C.We should use our wisdom and talk them over.
D.We should use violence.
3.Which opinion is mentioned in the letter?
A.Violence can solve the problems.
B.We should fight wars.
C.A war is extreme violence.
D.Bombs and missiles can reach people’s hearts.
4.What does the sentence “Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring ,and that’s what we need in the world.” mean?
A.We need to use violence to solve problems.
B.What we need is bombs and missiles.
C.We need bombs and missiles to create love and caring.
D.What we need in the world is love and caring.
5.What’s the letter about? It’s about .
A.Joshua’s thoughts about wars B.Joshua’s story
C.hate and love D.arguments

Each and every year, during Chongyang Festival, citizens of China celebrate the elders in their families and communities. It’s a special tradition which is rooted in the deep value that Chinese culture places on honouring their elders.
Sadly, many of our aging population are seniors without sons, daughters or grandchildren to visit. While they may have great friends, they no doubt miss the tender and loving relationships unique to families. To fill this void(空虚), many volunteers turned up on October 28 at nursing homes around the country in order to spend time with the residents. In some cases, they performed humble(谦逊的) gestures of kindness, such as combing their hair or washing their feet.
While the kind acts were appreciated, one embarrassing story out of Anhui province raised a valuable question. Reportedly, one old gentleman had his feet washed seven times during the day by different volunteers. Is this genuinely(真诚地) caring for the elderly? Many of the residents at the home said that those gestures do not make them feel cared for at all. Their family members or community volunteers may drop by for a few hours of token time, but soon they disappear back into their busy lives.
There is nothing we can give that is more valuable or appreciated than our time. While you may feel like there is barely enough time to care for your many responsibilities, might it be possible to spare just a moment as you walk home from school to sit with a senior who lives in your community? Just five minutes is not going to prevent you from getting your homework done, but it may totally change a day of loneliness into a day of joy for one old man or woman. Do you live far from your grandparents? Why not pick up the phone and let them know you’re thinking of them? Or maybe you could remind them of the “good old days” and mail them a short letter. Imagine their surprise and joy!
We live in a complicated(复杂的) and busy world, but kindness and caring is still a very simple thing.
