The high school diploma (文凭) is losing its value quickly, as a growing number of students graduate (毕业) from school without the math and reading skills that colleges and companies require, according to a new report.
The high school graduation exams that most states (州) require students to pass before they graduate remain far too easy. Most of the exams generally test eighth-or ninth-grade level work.
Today, even high school graduates who are going to have blue-collar (蓝领) jobs need to study the math, research and writing courses. But in high school, only students who are going to college are now required to take these courses.
“If you want a good job with a good pay, it’s a high-skill job,” said Michael Cohen, a leading member of the America Diploma Project.
The project suggests that all graduates master a wide range (范围) of skills. “A high school diploma should mean something to a company and university,” said Ohio Gov. Bob Taft, who is Achieve’s co-chairman.
In Taft’s state, about 30% students who go directly to college from high school have to take remedial classes of English or math, he said. It’s easy to see that the present high-school graduating standards are not preparing students for college education.
And with high-skilled jobs increasingly headed overseas to places like India and Ireland, states need to act, he said.
To prove why math and reading skills matter, the report includes real-life examples of problems students meet in college and that workers must solve each day on the job. 
Some states are taking actions to upgrade the high school diploma. In Texas, all high school students, starting with the 2008 graduating class, will have to take the college-prep curriculum (大学预备课程) - unless a parent agrees to an easier course load. Other states are planning similar moves.

9.High school in the United States starts too early.Given teenagers'sleep patterns, the ideal school start time could be as late as 11:30 a.m.-when many high school students have already finished half a school day and are eating lunch.
Researchers from Harvard and Oxford wrote about this new finding in a recent article in the journal Learning,Media, and Technology. In the article,Paul Kelley argued that, given when kids and teenagers are biologically conditioned to wake up,10-year-olds should start school at 8 a.m.,16-year-olds should start between 10 a.m.and 10:30 a.m.,and 18-year-olds should start between 11 a.m.and 11:30 a.m.
There's been lots of research done on sleep and performance in school-but this article argues that school should start even later than most proposals for a later start time call for.Teens aren't lazy-adults need to adjust. This isn't laziness-sleep patterns are a biological necessity.Reviewi ng evidence from studies around the world, the researchers argue that starting school later would help students learn more, perform better on tests, and even make teenagers less annoyed. When the Minneapolis Public Schools moved their start time from 7:15 a.m.to 8:40 a.m.,students liked the change and reported that"attendance, achievement, behavior, and mood improved."
Parents were positive,too.92 percent said they liked the change, and parents reported that their kids were easier to live with when they weren't getting up so early. At the US Air Force Academy, where students were randomly assigned(分配;指派)to classes with earlier and later start times, students who started earlier performed worse all day long on those days.
The researchers argue that this is partly cultural, and that getting up early is still seen as a virtue. That's wrong,They write:"A common belief is that adolescents are tired because they choose to stay up too late,or are difficult to wake in the morning because they are lazy.Educators tend to think that adolescents learn best in the morning and if they simply went to sleep earlier,it would improve their concentration. The truth is that adults need to be educated."
61.What does the passage mainly argue about?A
A.The time to start high school.
B.The performance of teenagers.
C.The sleep patterns of the teenagers.
D.The common belief of adolescents.

A.the earlier the children get up,the cleverer they will become
B.the elder the children are,the later they should start learning

D.the later children wake up,the more knowledge they can get
63.Which is NOT the benefit of starting school later in Paragraph3?D
A.Gaining more knowledge.

In my second year of high school, the class was scheduled to run the mile. when the coach yelled, "Ready. Set. Go!", I rushed out like an airplane, faster than anyone else for the first 20 feet. I made up my mind to finish first. As we came around the first of four laps, there were students all over the track (跑道). By the end of the second lap, many of the students had already stopped. They had given up and were on the ground breathing heavily. As I started the third lap, only a few of my classmates were on the track. By the time I hit the fourth lap, I was alone. Then it hit me that nobody had given up. Instead, everyone had already finished. As I ran that last lap, I cried. And 12 minutes, 42 seconds after starting, I crossed the finishing line. I fell to the ground. I was very upset.

Suddenly my coach ran up to me and picked me up, yelling, "You did it. Mark! You finished, son. You finished" He looked at me straight in the eyes, waving a piece of paper in his hand. It was my goal (目标 ) for the day which I had forgotten. I had given it to him before class. He read it aloud to everyone. It simply said, "I, Mark Brown, will finish the mile run tomorrow, come what may." My heart lifted. My tears went away, and I had a smile on my face as if I had eaten a banana. My classmates clapped. How to Stay Motivated in High School

Do you find it difficult, almost impossible to stay motivated about high school? There are so many demands on your time, along with the expectation of parents and teachers. You really want to look at all the “big picture”. Your time in high school is likely to be just a small part of your whole life.    1.

Set realistic goals and rewards. It can be as simple as doing your work and then taking a break to do something you like.    2.   It isn’t as though you have to do all of your work at one time. In other words, when you reach a good break point, give yourself some kind of reward such as doing something you enjoy and afterwards get back to work.

  3.  Consider your own parents, teacher, neighbor, or relative—anyone you respect and trust that can be in your corner to root for you and cheer you on. You want someone who has some life experience to counsel you. If you can find more than one source of such wisdom, it is all the better. Don’t ignore this suggestion. It can really save you a lot of heartbreak and suffering later on.

Have supportive friends. There are people who are going nowhere fast.    4.   Instead, stay around other motivated students who enjoy school, study and work hard because they are so positive. That positive influence will help motivate you.

Work with yourself not against. We all have energy levels.    5.  If your levels are low, determine what raises your energy levels to get you going. Then get as much done as you can. Also, don’t wait until later to get started doing things like your homework. One student explained that he would start work at the end of the class. Then when he got home, he was finishing the work rather than just starting the work.

A.Then get back to work.

B.Don’t hang out with them.

C.Seek the wisdom of an elder.

D.Try to go with the flow of your levels.

E. But it can be the most meaningful years.

F. Study hard, have fun and enjoy each year.

G. Find classmates with whom you can share your concerns.
